An absolutely MASSIVE apology is owed to Graham Linehan by the way.

BreadInCaptivity · 02/12/2022 13:55

''Although there is no fixed duration for an inquiry, the Commission’s aim is to conclude the substantive investigation within 9 months, and the final stage, which is to publish the statement of results of inquiry, within 3 months of that''

LizzieSiddal · 02/12/2022 14:02

Thought it was worth reposting the link From @ResisterRex of Charity Commission Statement a

The inquiry, which opened on 28 November 2022, will examine:
• The administration, governance and management of the charity by the trustees including its leadership and culture.
• Whether the trustees have complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities as trustees under charity law; in particular whether they had sufficient oversight of the charity’s activities and compliance with its policies and procedures and in line with its charitable objects.
• Whether there has been any misconduct and/or mismanagement by the trustees.
It is the Commission’s policy, after it has concluded an inquiry, to publish a report detailing what issues the inquiry looked at, what actions were undertaken as part of the inquiry and what the outcomes were.

Pleased to see the inquiry is going to be so through. There’s no hiding for Mermaids now.

So green was investigated by someone hired by mermaids, found wanting, and kicked out.

That sounds like damage limitation to me.

I mean her judgement obviously was completely off, not just because of her child, but also forcing a spurious, personal and ideologically driven enquiry against the charity commission, the very organisation mermaids rely on for their existence.

Interesting that they're not coming across with all the information the charity commission has asked for, though. Presumably it's something they can't pin solely on Green, and therefore don't want to incriminate themselves.

Still, the can is so open, the worms don't know which way to turn.

It’s not about pinning things on Green. As trustees they have a legal responsibility to ensure the charity is compliant in terms of a whole host of corporate governance issues, not least safeguarding. Green reports to the board; they have ultimate responsibility for the charity’s activities. If the trustees cannot demonstrate they have ensured the right policies are in place and adhered to, or that they have effectively let Green run the charity unquestioned, they are in a lot of trouble.

DameHelena · 02/12/2022 14:03

Oh this will be interesting.
I too am looking forward to what the Guardian do.

Got it. Good. Thanks for the explanation. It's very reassuring that they can't scapegoat her.

That timeline is useful, thank you Arabella. Pretty much done and dusted by Christmas 2023, all being well. I'll bring my Stirrup cup for the departers. Mwa haha.

VestofAbsurdity · 02/12/2022 14:03

From the Statutory Guidance document linked by BreadInCaptivity:

In serious cases of abuse and regulatory concern, the Commission may open a statutory inquiry. The Commission’s decision to open an inquiry is not taken lightly, and depends on a careful assessment of a set of factors. Before taking the decision to open a statutory inquiry, it will apply its Regulatory and Risk Framework, and will make sure that an inquiry is carried out in line with the principles of best regulatory practice.

This does sound serious.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 14:04

I remember that when the news came out about the CC looking at them the other month and the figures for this stage being really low, presumably because they know that doing this will likely end a charity.

oh well!

And it won't just be the specific thing that has triggered the inquiry, there will be a lot of publicity around all the activities that they have been up to.

The sunlight will be blinding.

Probably explains why this is now popping up on Mermaids' front page.

mermaidsuk.org.uk/

Well, they are not going to have their funding from the Lottery et al reinstated any time soon.

Wonder how all those corporations who blindly and cravenly supported Mermaids are feeling today.

waterwitch · 02/12/2022 14:08

So there is a seriou CC investigation, and even Mermaid’s internal report highlights some of their failings - but this is described as being ‘under attack’ They really have no sense of self-awareness or their responsibility to the children do they - even now 😱
Surely a ‘we’ve suspended services until we can ensure everyone is treated with respect, and the highest standards of safeguarding are in place’ would have been a bit better?!

guinnessguzzler · 02/12/2022 14:09

Big news indeed. It shouldn't have had to come to this, there were plenty of warnings for the Trustees had they been paying attention.

MagpiePi · 02/12/2022 14:09

I'd also like to see how Gendered Intelligence, GIRES, Stonewall, Educate & Celebrate, Global Butterflies etc explain their actions in attempting to transition other people's children? Ideally in a court of law.

Hear, hear!

The sunlight needs to shine in a lot of places

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 14:10

OK so the kids might only ever read mermaids stuff and like minded Twitter feeds etc and so fall for the mermaids spiel.

Their parents however, I would hope, also read actual news sources so will see the minimising being done by mermaids.

WarriorN · 02/12/2022 14:12

No suppose that mermaids is trending

DameHelena · 02/12/2022 14:12

Fuck. Under attack and fundraising to 'fight back'? I'm not going to click on the 'yes, I'll help' button but what are they going to do? Pay for legal advice?

Kucingsparkles · 02/12/2022 14:13

I wish I had your optimism, but I fear you underestimate the sunk costs, wilful blindness and self-deception which got them onto this Path of Righteousness in the first place.

WarriorN · 02/12/2022 14:13

Hope they get THE FUCK out of schools now.

Interesting statement from Mermaids. Possibly the first time they have admitted to doing anything wrong.

Other thoughts:

  1. The Mermaids legal action against the Charities Commission must be one of the most counter-productive legal actions in history.
  2. The Guardian's decision to run a fawning interview with Susie Green that played down the existing CC investigation and all the other problems now looks even more stupid than it did then.
  3. Who's going to want the CEO role now? Grin
  4. Have Emma Watson et al embarked upon a mass delete of their tweets yet?
  5. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Best post so far, particularly Point 5!

VestofAbsurdity · 02/12/2022 14:14

The Commission opened a regulatory compliance case into the charity in September 2022 after safeguarding allegations were raised. It has now formalised its engagement by opening a statutory inquiry, due to newly identified issues about the charity’s governance and management.

Newly identified issues read it and weep Mermaids and all your craven, sycophantic supporters.

Anyone who comes out with We didn't know, yada, yada YES YOU FUCKING DID, YOU WERE WARNED YOU REFUSED TO LISTEN AND JUST SLUNG ABUSE AT THOSE DOING THE WARNING.
