I can really hear his voice reading that.

FOJN · 02/12/2022 12:28

I thought the threat was obvious.

Didn't we all? Five years ago I thought it was so obvious that all we had to do was point out the obvious to the unthinking "be kind" crowd and we would quickly negotiate a reasonable solution. I can hardly believe where we are but the stakes are so high that we cannot stop pointing out the obvious.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 12:33

Well said that man. I did like his "I thought it was obvious" bits.

I'm going back to read it again now.

FunnyTalks · 02/12/2022 12:39

Yes, brilliant and brave as always from Glinner.

I hope this reaches further than the usual ears.

I'm not sure what happens when a believer in gender ideology is exposed to words such as these. There's no tiptoeing around that it's illogical and is at heart an MRA movement. I suppose the point of the way Glinner has been treated is to ensure people refuse to even be near his words.

I hope Chimamanda Ngozie Adiche's excellent Reith lecture at least encourages those on the fence to consider noticing what they've been told not to look at. She said she specifically seeks out and reads banned books (some of hers are apparently banned from some American school districts).

nilsmousehammer · 02/12/2022 12:43

I agree. I thought it was obvious.

Still baffled as to how 'that causes massive harm to all those people, but it doesn't matter to me and I don't care' is now supposed to be the voice of progressive, compassionate liberalism. Who identify as not being misogynist, homophobic, classist, elitist, authoritarian, or cruel.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 12:45

You know in quiet moments when the world around me seems to momentarily fade into the background I find myself wondering if I've gone completely insane and I'm actually in a straitjacket somewhere and all those dystopian novels I read over the years are, in my drug addled brain, causing me to have some crazy nightmare

Then I realise that nope it's worse than that I'm actually in a dystopian reality.

I 'd prefer the straitjacket option at the moment if I'm honest.

littlbrowndog · 02/12/2022 12:47

Great piece

I still can’t believe that so many people governments councils charities have thought this was acceptable and believe it

Me too!

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 02/12/2022 12:50

He has been so poorly treated, it's quite shocking. I'm sure history will be a lot kinder, but that can't be a huge consolation in the meantime.

Odd you say that. I was thinking this morning, is there something in the water supply that's sending people collectively round the twist?

catandcoffee · 02/12/2022 12:52

Just read it.
Great piece .
Is he still on here?

This is how I feel too.

Back in the early 2000s me and my OH were wondering about what the future might hold and we came up with the idea that, around about now, the heady mix of modern culture, environmental degradation and over-population would cause humans to start going crazy, but we never came up with anything as remotely deranged to what's happening now.

When I think about Glinner losing his income, his creative fulfillment and his wife over this it makes me really sad. I know a lot of women have lost a lot as well and don't mean to diminish that; it's all shit. I also think of all the wonderful comedy the world has lost because of Glinner being blacklisted.

DameMaud · 02/12/2022 13:05

What a great speech. Articulates the 'WTF is happening with the world?' so perfectly!

ReedOfFate · 02/12/2022 13:06

Well said Glinner!

I hope he does occasionally come on here and knows his words are appreciated Flowers

IwantToRetire · 02/12/2022 15:30

@Glinner - just to say what a great speech. It covers so much and is short!

I hope after you give the speech it gets media coverage, but I suppose that is unlikely.

Thanks

Glinner · 02/12/2022 15:48

Thank you for all the kind words, everyone. Glad you liked the speech!

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 16:05

@Glinner 💐and🍺for you we really do appreciate the work you do you know.

@Glinner You are absolutely wonderful and appreciated by every (sane) woman I know. Thankfully that’s the majority in my perhaps surprisingly leftist social circle. I say surprising because, well, you know why. Here’s to better, less dystopian times.

mizu · 02/12/2022 16:30

MrsOvertonsWindow · 02/12/2022 16:38

Makes me feel so emotional reading that brilliant piece. And a relief to read the feelings of other women caught up in this tragedy of mammoth proportions.

I'm very wary of the Battle Of Ideas organisation as they are funded by the ADF, an American conservative Christian legal advocacy group who campaign against same sex marriage and to and prevent access to abortion and contraceptives.

Not at all, I'm just surprised with all the good work he did for reproductive rights in Ireland that he'd support a group such as this.
