I think it is important to note that the only way Mermaids was able to grow into the leviathan it did was because the key figure in the charity was a middle-aged mother.

Had the front face of Mermaids been anyone else, the strangeness of the message would have been noticed far earlier. No one would have accepted a middle-aged father arguing for this level of psychosexual medical and surgical intervention in children. He would have been shut down from the off. Likewise, anyone without children would not have worked, nor anyone younger.

It had to be a middle-aged mother with a trans child. That's the only figure with enough societal preconceptual armour to be able to slip past the glaringly obvious safe guarding and grooming issues.

And this is the problem for Mermaids. Because of the nature of the subject, it only works if the key voices are non-trans parents.

Coming to this thread late but I just wanted to say that this is such an incredibly insightful comment. I'd never thought about it like this but you have hit the nail on the head.

That is why I would really like the new CEO to be a trans woman, just like the TRAs are claling for. It would make the general public start seeing it all in a totally different light.

They're aware of this issue so are more likely to go with a trans man.

Genius! Grin

Possibly we can exchange them for the female hostages taken for the crime of wanting equality and accessible services, and not to be raped in prisons please.

We might even then get to pin down how many female type people equate to one very special male person. Since currently it appears to be 1tq+m= f infinity

Tbh at this point I think their cover is blown past worrying about.

WarriorN · 28/11/2022 12:24

True!

MrsJamin · 28/11/2022 12:42

Gendered Intelligence is headed up by a transman so yes I think this would be the most obvious choice. I just hope they go under though, to be honest. I think Susie Green might try to start her own trans kids charity.

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/11/2022 13:39

Maybe Stonewall will give them Kirrin, and the support dog.
Does anyone know if Children in need are still supporting Mermaids ?

Birdsweepsin · 28/11/2022 13:41

Her new career? Musical artist according to google

I think LOJ would make a better Igor, he's more a follower than a leader.

And Keir Starmer as the local magistrate who suspects there is something not quite right about murdering thousands of women. But he just can't put his finger on it.

This sounds like the plot of a BBC Christmas drama where Miss Marple gets arrested for being old, female and pointing out really inconvenient truths.

I could be very, very wrong and I hope I am, but I think this is more than just losing the court case.
I've noticed that the most enthusiastic Mermaid parents seem to have either gone quiet or protected their accounts.
SG, the board, many of the 'mermaid mums' are all true believers. They're not suddenly going to back down over losing a case. They'd just double down and call transphobia instead.
I suspect that the charity commission investigation has found something serious instead around their worrying lack of safeguarding and lack of DBS checking, something that may be serious enough to involve calling the police in.
Let's all hope that I am 100% wrong but I don't know what else would involve such a sudden withdrawal.

I'm guessing there's lots of unemployed transman Office Angels knocking about then....

The Crucible, 26th January next year. We should have a live watch-a-long on the Mumsnet boards.

Yep. My one consolation from all this is the knowledge that I would not be in the crowd shouting 'burn the witch!'

More likely, up on the stage.

Jo Bartosch on Mermaids. The proportion of growth in income and people is astonishing.

www.spiked-online.com/2022/11/28/is-this-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-mermaids/

"In its early years, Mermaids, which formed in 1995, did not refer to ‘transgender children’, but to ‘<a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20100801165841/www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/New%20Mermaids/aboutus.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">teenagers and children with gender-identity issuess’. Even in 20155, the charity’s website explained that its aim was to ‘let the child develop as he or she is naturally meant to, while loving and accepting them for who they are at the present time’...

Under Green’s leadership, Mermaids’ total income rose from just over £80,0000 in 2016 to £1,847,868 by 20211.

Mermaids is unrecognisable from the tiny parent-support group that was founded nearly 30 years ago. It now has around 44 staff members and 110 volunteers...
... the remaining staff have a choice. The easy option would be to carry on as they are, deflecting all criticism as unprovoked attacks. But the honest option, the honourable option, would be to admit to Mermaids’ mistakes and disband the charity once and for all."

WarriorN · 28/11/2022 20:54

That's striking. Striking projection of her own homophobic ideology too.

Happylittlechicken · 28/11/2022 21:01

They can’t disband! I’ve just applied for SG job! I didn’t make my insta and TikTok public for nothing I hope!!

Ooh fingers crossed. You'd be so perfect. All just a happy little chicken nothing to see here then bam

DBS checks for all

Safeguarding

Watchful waiting

No MAP adjacent employees

No people dealing with children who also work in porn.

No breast binding

no medically fucked up kidsis

No turning children against their parents.

You'd have no staff left by the end of the first week

Hm. It will depend on which bits of your anatomy you were showcasing and whether you'd photoshopped wings onto them tbh...

Cocklaidoscopic.

I was looking for something on my tablet earlier and forgot I was looking on the device with the screenshot of said cocklaidoscope

It's truly vomit inducing, and I say that as someone who has been known to be partial to a bit of cock in my time.

Happy's been very thorough all the correct photos, dodgy alliances and peer reviewed made up data. If she gets the job she's going to need a handler to make sure she doesn't succumb to their mind games. We'll have to set up a Rota.

Ooh yes. I’m gonna get the job, get settled then bam! It’s all DBS (enhanced). And no discord or chat, watchful waiting and compliance with the cass report. @Boiledbeetle wanna be my minder? It’ll be fun. We can make mermaids a force for good and a resource to help GNC youth.

I am sceptical about a big scandal, simply because Mermaids don't actually provide many services themselves - they mainly signpost to other organisations.

I'm sure the helpline is as dodgy AF, in terms of encouraging kids to persist in transitioning, but that wouldn't be a Mermaids-specific scandal, given that the NHS in England was basically doing the same until a few months ago, and NHS Scotland still is.

I suppose the local groups may have generated safeguarding issues but they'd have to be pretty huge to have brought down SG, given that she could probably have got away with saying the problem was an isolated issue at a local level, blah blah.
