I actually find it really alarming that the Royal College of Psychiatry has tweeted to the effect that this IS transphobia without investigating the nature of the questioning first.

I strongly suspect the questioning would have been along the lines of ' how can you support the affirmation model in view of the Cass Report?' which they ought to have been able to answer without self harming, ffs.

It's a mess but if we have the Royal College backing transition , in spite of the Cass Report, then they need to be answering some serious questions on why they see evidence that affirmation is harmful as inherently transphobic. If they are advising their members to 'be kind' on the basis of no evidence that it is in the best interests of the patients then that is hugely problematic and is not in the best interest of the patients as set out in the Principles of Psychiatry in their own code of practice. See in particular:

2 Psychiatrists shall not exploit patients’ vulnerability.

6 Psychiatrists shall ensure patients and their carers can make the
best available choices about treatment.

Yes, I was just gobsmacked by the arrogance, blatant manipulation and unprofessionalism, but Helleofabore's right - it is very much a case study for the psychiatrists, or it should be.

Brefugee · 24/11/2022 08:46

It's quite pathetic, tbh. If only because a list of the "transphobic" questions would help other people not be transphobic and feels won't get hurts.

Datun · 24/11/2022 08:46

It's quite heartening that he go so much pushback though. More so that it was unexpected. Shows the tide is turning.

Plus the many replies asking for examples. People are wising up.

Are you leaping to the assumption that they haven't investigated?

(Shocked face).

Yes, that's my assumption too. I'd put money on most questions being perfectly reasonable, some being maybe a bit clueless, and none being transphobic.

If RCPsych are going to join in with this clown's smearing of their members, they need to actually show some evidence, or they should withdraw.

It's interesting how one reply says the sessions must have been infiltrated by an anti-trans group (for this to have happened) because they live in such an echo chamber they don't realise 99% of people think it's all nonsense 😂

Whatwherewherewhat · 24/11/2022 08:50

Has anyone seen a single question yet? 😂

lifeturnsonadime · 24/11/2022 08:50

I thought it was clear they hadn't from their own tweet history linked upthread.

Brefugee · 24/11/2022 08:51

the discussions on twitter are maddening. There is one section where a nurse is spouting off about how she so cares about her patients (guess woman, has a female handle) but completely denies that sex plays a hugely important role in medicine.

I'm fine to use names, pronouns etc etc. But the absolute, complete and utter piffle of saying TWAW is dangerous. And having to say "a patient has abdominal pain" instead of "a pregnant woman has abdominal pain" is frighteningly dangerous.

NecessaryScene · 24/11/2022 08:51

He's presumably use to the crowd being cowed enough to shut up and seethe quietly.

There was probably an avalanche effect here where the first couple of people asking sensible questions emboldened everyone else to say what was on their mind.

That may not have happened to him before.

Yes. And quite a few asking if it was coming from a place of 'ignorance' and people just need 'educating.'

They couldn't make it sound more sinister if they tried.

villamariavintrapp · 24/11/2022 08:52

RCPsych is completely captured, rainbow lanyards and all. I'm pleased some of the audience had questions though, I've had concerns!

So, this individual has given an extended live demonstration to the Psychiatrists on the poor mental health aspects of ideological thinking.

Yes!

👍

Rainbowshit · 24/11/2022 08:56

The questions came without warning? Has he never been to any kind of presentation? It's normal to have a Q&A afterwards and normal to answer questions that arise during the presentation too.

Why would questions need to be evidence based? Surely asking a question is asking for clarification or evidence, nor giving it? Surely the presenter would have relished the opportunity to demonstrate his superior knowledges and set the questioner straight?

Datun · 24/11/2022 08:59

Non evidenced based questions. I'd love to hear one of them. Even a little one.

Don't forget Hartland is one of the authors of the infamous GLADD charter....

Yes, I hate that 'you need educating thing'. It does sound sinister I think because it's an American term that doesn't translate very well into English. Over here we used to say 'you need to learn more about it' which sounds much less threatening.

I'd love to see the questions, but I don't expect to. TBH I think the whole trans thing generally doesn't like any questions, no matter how innocent, it much prefers unquestioning compliance.

As a slightly side note, as a ex-nurse and therefore having worked with many, many Drs I am amazed that this Dr thinks it is professional for making it all about them and posting that ridiculous photo on twitter. Who cares if he/she/they found some of the questions stressful. It's not about them, it's about patient health.

You know things are bad when even Drs are making it all about them.

I’m not a psychiatrist but surely this is the equivalent of a young girl posting pictures of her self harm cuts on Twitter and her mum jumping in to say “look what these horrible bullies made my daughter do”.

Was just thinking this…

GrabbyGabby · 24/11/2022 09:06

There is a great quote on the twitter thread.

" I would rather have questions that cant be answered than answers that cant be questioned."

So stealing this.

It’s interesting that a lot of the replies refer to Joseph as Jo and not the male diminutive Joe.

RoyalCorgi · 24/11/2022 09:15

Venice Allen has an excellent thread asking for 45 "transphobic" questions on gender-affirming healthcare. Some great responses including, from Andy Lewis, the unanswerable: 'If sex is not a binary, why are there two types of “affirmation” surgery and two sets of cross sex hormone therapy?'

I wouldn't read too much into that I have a Joseph and loads of people don't know that it should be abbreviated to Joe not Jo as he is a boy!

We are appalled by the treatment of the presenters this afternoon during our CCQI EDI webinar, it represents the opposite to the College values, which we strive to uphold every day. We are currently looking into what happened and how.

RCPSych says this - I wonder if they mean that Joseph has treated presenters appallingly? Because that is what I'm seeing right now. He can't be bothered to substantiate any allegations and is arrogant enough to think people should believe him just because he says so. Height of narcissism.

This is a highly contested field. I expect that what the presenters said was offensive to some women but if they went on twitter to say it was so, I would expect them to share some evidence in the form of what was actually said. Why does he think he's above such things.
