R4 Brain of Britain "All Women Final"

SereneSemolina · 21/11/2022 18:16

Did anyone else hear the loud applause of the audience at the declaration this was a first for the competition - an 'all women" line up for the final?

I would be more than happy to applaud an all women final, but clapping a finalist line of 3 women and a TW just makes me ask, why?!

I've made a complaint to the Beeb on grounds of factual error or inaccuracy.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/11/2022 13:31

When they took Emma Laslett's picture, in the pink and blue number, I wish someone would have been kind enough to tell Emma Laslett that the biro, that Emma Laslett must have been chewing, had leaked.

viques · 24/11/2022 13:43

I did laugh at the comment that one of the contestants was more Brian of Britain than Brain of Britain.

But honestly, are they sending out free sachets of kool aid with the tv licence these days? Woman = adult female human . Transwoman = adult human male who identifies as a female. So an all woman shortlist/ final/ sport team consists of adult female humans. How bloody hard is it?

I’ve been listening to Fi & Jane (Garvey) on Times Radio since they left the BBC and although I haven’t heard them talk about this issue specifically, it’s very clear from their comments how much they were restricted by BBC editorial control and prevented from expressing any opinions.

Their new podcast ‘Off Air’ is a great listen!

I listened to this for the first time earlier this week, and it was just news stuff and guests, not particularly women, but it did feel like a breath of fresh air and it was far more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. I thought that it was worth tuning in to instead of WH (even though it is the afternoon, but then WH used to be in the afternoon).

I don't think it's the 'all women' bit they're apologising for, it's the fact that Emma said it was 'all female'. I genuinely don't think she knew that one of the finalists was male.

Has anyone actually apologised for anything? I've only seen a tweet confirming that one of the finalists was a transwoman (which the WH team didn't know), but pointedly not acknowledging that statements about it being an "all women" or "all female" final were wrong, much less apologising for those statements. Weasel words.

Helleofabore · 24/11/2022 03:57

It is a significant change. And the TRA extremists are unhappy from looking at the comments on that tweet.

I followed a quote tweet of that tweet - it went through all the arguments of WH being transphobic, BBC being transphobic, Grauniad being transphobic via the usual racism and antisemitism and ended up with 'the BBC want us dead' which I felt was a bit of a reach tbh.

No, no apology at all.

totalnamechanger · 24/11/2022 14:20

What a complete and utter fuck up. They’ve made no one happy here. I’m almost wondering whether someone planned this to sabotage WH.

Whether WH (and EB in particular) are a) presenting pieces with absolutely no research b) have conducted research but won’t stand by their conclusions and then lie about this c) have done their research but felt coerced to slant it in a particular way .. its not a great look for anyone who works on the program

nilsmousehammer · 24/11/2022 15:49

The whole thing is nuts.

Some people believe that male people are women if they say so.
Some people believe that male people turn into female people by taking medication and having cosmetic surgery.
Some people believe that male people have women's brains and a gendered soul that ended up in the wrong body (by some higher power, who apparently fucks up fairly often).
Some people believe that Jesus Christ is their one true saviour.
Some people believe in reincarnation.
Some people believe that Father Christmas is real and that it is necessary to spit at a magpie to ward off bad luck.

This is all fine, it's a free country and tolerance of belief is a thing here. But this business of a national broadcaster, publicly funded in a multi faith society, speaking as though there is only one belief that is real and no other beliefs exist?

And that's before we get into that this is objectively, factually reality denying and lying if you don't hold one or several of the above beliefs?

And when they're forced to admit that they shared a factual inaccuracy (but later, having said what they actually wanted to say, knowing that not many will ever see or notice the recanting so they achieved what they wanted anyway?) There are howls of rage that to state that other beliefs too is 'wanting that particular group of believers dead).

Would someone stop the utter fucking mess of this planet and let me off it? And stop forcing me to pay the BBC to evangelise and push its religious mania and prejudice at me?

And trust me, I'm not going to any afterlife run by the nutjob who is busy stuffing souls in the wrong body.

Clymene · 24/11/2022 16:05

No, good point @hallouminatus. It isn't an apology, it's a statement

@nilsmousehammer you've conjured up a pic of a manic production line 😂 Wasn't that Bertha that always put the wrong thing in the wrong place?

I feel a bit sorry for Emma Haslett to be honest.
as a poster above said no one was bothered that a transwoman was on the programme or the other programmes Emma had featured in but once the BBC lied everyone felt compelled to repeatedly point out this was actually a man and if Emma is dysphoric this would be fairly distressing I would think.
Emma is not a cheat like Lia Thomas and has every right to be competing in these programmes. The BBC could have celebrated it as the first final with a TW or just not mentioned it. They have done this.

and seriously Ben Cohen! Apart from
the inconsistency with pink news the idea that anyone with eyes or ears didn’t realise that was a male person is utterly ridiculous.

This. Everyone was compelled to point out this is a lie and that person is male. Not female. Pretending they are female is insane, and saying it's an all woman final is insulting.

It's called driven to the discourtesy, and their virtue signalling has meant that TW has been made the centre of controversy. Which will be used to try and guilt women that 'you shouldn't be mean to the poor TW (so shut up and accept the lies and forced evangelism from a public broadcaster, enable the harm to the female sex and your own erasure to spare male feelings). Not that this works any more.

Had they not made an ideological thing out of this competitor people would have been interested in the four people in the final and who won, and who identified as what would have been irrelevant.

It'll be Brian in packing.

It's always Brian in packing.

SereneSemolina · 24/11/2022 22:12

@nilsmousehammer - I'm envisaging your mistake-maker as a bit like Nell and Flo with the gnomes here (less than 2 mins in!)

And exactly this -

Absolutely!

SereneSemolina · 25/11/2022 09:05

So, what do we reckon the chances are for this to be discussed on Feedback later?

OP posts:
ChateauMargaux · 25/11/2022 10:00

Can we instead see if we can sing the praises of Sarah Trevarthen who is only the 6th woman to win the Brain of Britain in 58 years of competition and talk instead about the barriers women face.

ChateauMargaux · 25/11/2022 10:02

Or maybe not even discussing that.. just cheer her and talk about her path to the final.

Googling 'winner of Brain of Britain 2022' give many more results discussing the person who came third....

SereneSemolina · 25/11/2022 10:07

Yes @ChateauMargaux you're right

She has been absolutely cheated of her moment.

Itsbiasedhere · 25/11/2022 10:12

It's stupid and it shouldn't be celebrated even if it was 4 adult human females any more that I'd 4 adult human males had made the semi final.
