Did anyone else hear the loud applause of the audience at the declaration this was a first for the competition - an 'all women" line up for the final?

I would be more than happy to applaud an all women final, but clapping a finalist line of 3 women and a TW just makes me ask, why?!

I have definitely noticed that a competitive quizzer could tell you, for example, when Emma was published but not who she marries in the end.

I'd disagree with that to be honest. I know some of the competitive quizzers, including one of the other finalists and they all have a very individual range of knowledge and expertise, it's really very personal. What they tend to have in common, as well as natural aptitude, is making a specific effort to learn areas of knowledge.

That and every time you meet them for a drink managing to turn it into a quiz of some sort!

It's quite interesting the way the quiz shows do their casting though. They frequently approach the quiz community for contestants and many of them do the rounds of all the TV quizzes over the years. Things like who wants to be a millionaire they have a mix of "normal" people and professional quizzers to make sure it stays interesting.

I knew it would be this person. I know this person is a woman too, because of the special head tilt demonstrated throughout the appearance on Mastermind.

We are being lied to.

SereneSemolina · 23/11/2022 11:01

It's being reported in the Daily Mail now, very much as a "some people have a problem with this" issue.

Good quite from MF though.

OP posts:
StillWeRise · 23/11/2022 11:36

nothing on WH about it today!

SereneSemolina · 23/11/2022 11:48

Interesting that!

Seems a real shame that the winner's glory and interview has been overshadowed by all this. If they'd just not lied and made a huge announcement about the "all women" final, she'd have had the limelight as she should.

I need to make a proper complaint. Would be interesting if they actually discussed on Feedback but I imagine even if deluged with complaints, they won't

There was - they interviewed a woman who is a period educator or something (she did use the word woman).

KittensNotMittens · 23/11/2022 11:56

Sorry wrong thread (Tampax)

Oh yes, and quoting a Twitter sock that has been non-stop tweeting about Caroline Farrow for weeks.

nothing on WH about it today!

So so utterly disappointing. Either Emma Barnett believes the word ‘woman’ can mean anything that anyone wants it to mean or Emma has been ‘corrected’ the way Jane Garvey had been. Either way, it feels that WH no longer speaks for me.

tootiredtobother · 23/11/2022 14:09

email complaint sent to Radio 4,
yes and agree Emma flip flops on her TWAW position

DrBlackbird · 23/11/2022 14:11

Real shame that Emma (the finalist) didn’t win. That would’ve generated a much more interesting story.

SereneSemolina · 23/11/2022 17:18

I've also complained. Not sure why they need so much personal information for a complaint though.

Complaint to BBC and also to WH.

Ramblingnamechanger · 23/11/2022 17:44

Wondering if the person has a GRC, and what would happen if they were asked to clarify.

Not to derail but I'd love to see Fred Sargent on Mastermind answering questions on the Stonewall Riots.

He was there for all 6 nights and saw no transgender people taking part.

Perhaps it is intended as an additional barrier so that fewer people bother to complain?

SereneSemolina · 23/11/2022 19:34

I imagine so.

Interesting that they've issued a disclaimer now - the complaints/ratio/comments must have had some impact!

I noticed this a while ago, it smacks of needing to know enough about you to find you and send you for reeducation.
I havent sent any more complaints in from my personal email, I make a new one up for each complaint, and new name and address etc

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/11/2022 21:48

That's a significant change - it's the BBC acknowledging facts - that TWANW and therefore the phrase "all woman" should not have been used.
Can't wait to see more factual reporting from them.

SereneSemolina · 23/11/2022 21:50

We can hope @MrsOvertonsWindow - fingers crossed!

""We can clarify that Brain of Britain's list of women finalists included a trans woman, a detail which was not made available to the Woman's Hour team when they covered the story."

Oh for goodness' sakes! And these are supposed to be grown adults. and professional broadcasters? My arse.
