R4 Brain of Britain "All Women Final"

Did anyone else hear the loud applause of the audience at the declaration this was a first for the competition - an 'all women" line up for the final?

I would be more than happy to applaud an all women final, but clapping a finalist line of 3 women and a TW just makes me ask, why?!

If the BBC are now using both women and female to include biological males - where does that leave us?

They don't seem to be able to clock: the more they push this bullshit in the attempt to make everyone just give up and get used to it, they more they are driving us to have to shout, increasingly loudly, the words that they say are so very hurtful.

But there is no choice. Driven to the discourtesy. I'm afraid women have rights too TQ+ Hour.

WibblyWobblyWooWoo · 22/11/2022 13:28

The winner was interviewed on Woman's Hour today (Tuesday) and asked how she felt about an "all female final". There was such a long pause and hesitation in her response that I got the impression she knew perfectly well it wasn't an all female final but she just didn't know how to speak the truth about it. This compelled speach is pervasive and has dangerous consequences

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 15:02

I'm still a bit at a loss really.

What is the point? Why are the BBC pushing this? How does this increase confidence in the BBC and its ability to report and inform?

It's such a blatant lie to call it an all woman final, and to then move that into a discussion around representation of women in quizzes and quizzing - all the while holding up the inclusion of a TW as the answer?

I'm confused tbh.

It really does call into question the BBC’s ability to report accurately and without an agenda. This is the sort of thing that undermines trust and makes ordinary people feel uneasy about what else is being reported misleadingly. I hope they get lots of complaints.

GCMM · 22/11/2022 16:31

Emma Barnett said the final was 'all women' and ' all female', which it patently was not. Infuriating.

nauticant · 22/11/2022 16:59

It is possible that Emma Barnett was just going by what she'd been told by the producer(s) on the show and had no idea of the facts. However, she's been tagged in enough on Twitter for her to now know the truth and if she was inclined to she could correct her mis-statement(s).

And that’s not even mentioning beauty pageants.

It's a national quiz which is hard to win* so the transwoman's presence is on merit. It is the description of the finalists that is in question.

*But not hard to enter, I've seen every single contestant on different quiz shows before notably Pointless, Mastermind, and Only Connect.

wesayno · 22/11/2022 17:50

It's a deliberate slap in the face, frankly. A bog-standard mixed-sex/male-only final without any acknowledgement of sex would almost be preferable, rather than being gaslit into believing a group of women and one impostor is an example of female empowerment.

There is no merit to them being described as something they can never be.
They cannot win 'as a woman' because they are not a woman.

It's just another man in another final & nobody actually cares about another man in another final.

I don't care if they are a man or woman in a mixed sex contest, I just care about the lying.

It is statistically way past unlikely that so many men who identify as women across the world are suddenly winning everything in sight based on merit.

CrossPurposes · 22/11/2022 17:58

The transwoman came third.

err, it's a quiz not a physical sport, men have no natural advantage, the man in the final got his place on merit, fair dos

BUT it wasn't an all-women final

midgetastic · 22/11/2022 18:00

Interesting- men don't have a natural advantage but do they have a societal advantage ?

I don't know the programme so this may be irrelevant but I do notice that on average men have more free time than women so more time to spend learning things

As well as the confidence thing that affects who applies etc

TheKeatingFive · 22/11/2022 18:01

Well quizzing is traditionally dominated by men. I speak as a female quizzer myself. However this competition isn't sex segregated (are there any of those?) so that isn't the issue.

but it wasn't an all female final

TheKeatingFive · 22/11/2022 18:03

I think men tend to go in for competitive fact spouting whereas women tend to find that tedious.

I have definitely noticed that a competitive quizzer could tell you, for example, when Emma was published but not who she marries in the end.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 22/11/2022 18:30

was the TW the one that was in the final of last years only connect?

No, not the same person.

In the Mastermind 2020 final, as reported by Penis News.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 22/11/2022 19:17

thank you - I know who you mean now 👍

DrBlackbird · 22/11/2022 21:34

Surprising and disappointing that Emma Barnett went along with the ‘all women’ huzzah. No need to go on or even characterise it in this manner.

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 22:38

That's the odd thing @DrBlackbird - it's an absolute choice to make such a fanfare about lying like this.

But was also on Only Connect, a few years ago now.
