R4 Brain of Britain "All Women Final"

Did anyone else hear the loud applause of the audience at the declaration this was a first for the competition - an 'all women" line up for the final?

I would be more than happy to applaud an all women final, but clapping a finalist line of 3 women and a TW just makes me ask, why?!

BBC lying again.

Where?

Link?

NewLightbulbs · 22/11/2022 00:57

Damn, sorry, forgot the page I'm on. Yes, the I agree the BBC have lied again.

"R4 Brain of Britain "All Women Final",

Agree, no it's not, if it includes a man.

An aside. This article came up when googling the contestants. (The TW on Brain of Britain has been on loads of quizzes and seems to do really well - really impressive!)

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/a-brutal-choice-change-sex-or-kill-yourself-f8cpstwkvlb

A couple of lines from this article (from 2014) are really interesting, some arguments have been going on a long time!

"In Britain, there is a furore about prescribing drugs that temporarily block the onset of puberty to gender-confused children as young as ten. It sounds like meddling medical insanity until you read how postponing dreaded secondary sexual characteristics reduces the horrific suicide rate."

And this shows how the numbers have really changed, many teachers report far higher numbers than then -

"in a school of 1,000 pupils that means five children will feel that their biological sex and the gender they identify with do not correspond"

I’m amazed you commented that these arguments have been going on a long time, but didn’t point out the obvious: that the point you highlighted about puberty blockers and suicide rates has been thoroughly debunked. Puberty blockers do not reduce suicide rates and they are rapidly coming to be seen to do more harm than good.

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 07:51

Yes @PriOn1 that's what made me highlight that bit. I found it interesting that it was used as such a firm justification at that point, and yet we are 8 years down the line and for eg MPs are still using it, despite no one doing the study, let alone providing the data.

I've seen it referred to on social media as an "all-female" final and that has wound me up too.

Yes, quite a few comments claiming not just "all women" but "all female". Words becoming completely meaningless.

The rah-rah aspect of this is is going to be discussed on Woman's Hour later this morning:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001fcjp

Yesterday Radio 4’s Brain of Britain saw its first ever all-women final. 2022 champion Sarah Trevarthen joins Emma Barnett to discuss her victory, as well as her experiences undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer while taking part in the show. Becky Howell, the co-founder of feminist quiz zine Quizogyny, also joins us to talk about the rise of women in quizzing.

Will they discuss the elephant in the room? Or will it all be DEI spin?

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 08:29

TheKeatingFive · 22/11/2022 00:28

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command

Yes @TheKeatingFive and "now clap like good people, applaud my lies"

Oh my god, this shit drives me insane.

It’s like a massive practical joke that’s just got completely out of control.

Wouldn't it be refreshing of they just talked about this really honestly.

"So Sarah, did you find it difficult to listen as they described it as an all women line up for the final?"

"How did you feel to read it billed that the final would result in a woman winning, guaranteed?"

"What do you think the barriers to women taking part in these quizzes are? Why do you think there hasn't ever actually been an all women line up"

Etc.

Apologies @SereneSemolina . I thought this thread was going to turn into another odd one like To ask HOW he/they or she/they works?

Abhannmor · 22/11/2022 09:43

I'm afraid I'd probably have applauded if I was in the studio audience . Might not have clocked the tw depending where I was seated. Besides , the other women , it's a big occasion for them , cant spoil it?

But yeah , what utter nonsense .

Dreikanter · 22/11/2022 10:07

FFS Women’s Hour, it was not “an all female final”.

I expected better from Emma Barnett.

nauticant · 22/11/2022 10:37

The discussion has now started on Woman's Hour.

MsMcWibble · 22/11/2022 10:37

Yeah. I heard 'all female final'. Outrageous shark jump. Shame on Women's Hour. When the history of this insanity is written, they will be in the chapter titled 'Traitors'.

nauticant · 22/11/2022 10:38

"All four of the finalists were women."

"... female quizzers".

The way it's being discussed, I don't think they're going to report this honestly. It'll be a shame if Emma Barnett keeps schtum for a quiet life.

Dreikanter · 22/11/2022 10:41

Introduced the main feature as “all women” and then said “all female”.

This blurring of language is frustrating, especially as it’s about encouraging women (as in females) in quizzing and questions reflecting women’s reality.

Dontaskdontget · 22/11/2022 10:42

SereneSemolina · 21/11/2022 19:25

It just feels so deliberate, so gaslighty, such a "I dare you to say anything" thing to do - announcing it's 'all women - a record!' and clearly inviting supportive applause from the audience.

Applauding the finalists would be great, I'd join in with that.

Yep. It’s bullying to go along with the gaslighting. Nothing to applaud in that.

I may have shouted at the radio.

nilsmousehammer · 22/11/2022 11:02

Sent yet another complaint. Not that they care. But if they only plan to broadcast the One True Faith they can bloody well stop the licence fee and their Believers can fund them.

KittensNotMittens · 22/11/2022 11:11

They didn’t need to say anything did they? But they chose to. I guess because it’s radio.

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 11:13

I just can't wrap my head around this.

Why have a focus on WH on Women Quizzers and Women participants if they're not only women but TW are included. What is it about the barriers and underrepresentation that is common across those 2 discrete groups?

How does anyone benefit from this?

OP posts:
StillWeRise · 22/11/2022 11:14

did no one tweet WH about this ? they're always asking listeners to get in touch

SereneSemolina · 22/11/2022 11:16

It wasn't an all female or all women final Emma. It was 3 women and a transwoman. Transwomen are a subset of men, not women.

I shouted at the radio and then turned it off
