www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/11/14/nhs-scotland-plans-fast-track-irreversible-surgery-trans-patients/

Begins:

"Scotland’s NHS is planning to fast-track irreversible surgeries for transgender patientss_, documents seen by The Telegraph reveal.
An NHS Scotland report, suggesting new transgender treatment rules, calls for “barriers” to gender reassignment surgery to be removed and proposes radical measures to make operations more widely available.
These include allowing GPs, rather than specialists, to send patients for procedures and that a “single opinion” is enough to refer for surgery in most cases.
Trans patients can “benefit” from operations including mastectomies, breast implants and genital reassignment, as well as hormone treatments, even if they do not experience “distress” about their gender identity, it is claimed.
The proposed treatment rules say that a patient’s background or mental health need not be examined in detail before they are referred for the procedures.
The report goes on to call for an “affirming” model of non-surgical care to still be delivered to childrenn_, despite an expert review for NHS England, conducted by the esteemed paediatrician Hilary Cass, raising concerns about the approach."

And the Scottish government wants more money from Westminster for their NHS because it is in crisis with long waiting lists? How have priorities got so skewed in Scotland?

ChaToilLeam · 14/11/2022 22:39

Scotland has completely lost the plot.

littlbrowndog · 14/11/2022 22:44

We have
waiting lists for hip replacements knee replacements cancer treatments and I could go on

cant even get into a and e.

is this just bullshit to placate the mad Green Party

ArcaneWireless · 14/11/2022 22:45

And meanwhile, in the real world, most round here can’t even get a telephone appt with a GP. Well they can, but they have to wait weeks. A face to face appointment? An acquaintance had to wait two months and she fought hard for that.

Fast tracking shouldn’t be at the expense of normal service.

ArabellaScott · 14/11/2022 22:49

'The recommendations draw heavily on approaches advocated by the controversial World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and suggest other surgical procedures backed by the group could become available on the Scottish NHS in future.
Among the procedures advocated by WPATH, which trans activists claim is an international authority on trans health but opponents say is an extreme lobby group, are castrations for people who identify as eunuchs.'

IvyTwines · 14/11/2022 22:51

Is Scotland aiming to become a sort of Americanised Wild West for surgeries on the edge of a Europe that seems to be slowly regaining its senses on this issue?

Tryfull · 14/11/2022 22:52

Madness

ArabellaScott · 14/11/2022 22:52

'“Access to hormones and surgeries can act as a prophylactic measure against distress.'

Come again?

ArcaneWireless · 14/11/2022 22:53

I wonder how willing the GPs would be to refer someone if they were held personally liable for fast tracking someone who changed their mind and decided to sue.

Galvantula · 14/11/2022 22:56

What.
The.
Actual.
Fuck.

I could greet when I hear yet another report of the Scottish Government ploughing the fuck on, in the face of mounting evidence of harm to patients of all ages. Not to mention the self ID batshittery. And not to mention unnecessary irreversible surgery is of course bloody harm. 😤

Send the fuckin comet right enough. 🫤

Hoardasaurusterf · 14/11/2022 22:59

This has made me so angry! The NHS is crippled here! I work in an acute setting and we are struggling badly with staff shortages, overwhelming demand, massive waiting lists etc so where on earth is the capacity & funding coming from for cosmetic procedures? If the SNP think they can waste precious NHS resources on this and not enrage the general public they are living in fantasy land!

FannyCann · 14/11/2022 23:34

Meanwhile NHS England is funding increased NHS provision of "masculinising genital surgery" at Chelsea and Westminster hospital.
By year 3 they should be doing about 160 surgeries a year and up to 280 thereafter.

It is likely that Scottish patients would be referred down to London as they are unlikely to have the specialist provision there.

Please note: to free up theatre space less complex surgery is being contracted out to a treatment centre (private).

And the proposal includes provision of a whole time Tissue Viability Nurse. For those who don't know TVNs specialise in wounds that aren't healing due to infection, tissue breakdown, ulceration etc.
Why on earth would they want a whole time TVN for 280 patients a year having surgeries that are notorious for high complication rates with wound break down and fistulas?

The whole system is now totally broken and the SNP have no morals.
I’m hoping that the public will wake up and see what’s going on before the next election, rather than being sucked into the narrative that it’s all the “Toaries” fault.
There will be court cases about this in years to come.

DaltonMedallion · 14/11/2022 23:53

Ahh money well spent Hmm

TheClogLady · 15/11/2022 00:08

Yet Scotland has no surgeons who do these surgical procedures so all NHS Scotland patients are operated on in England…

What if English surgeons don’t WANT patients with only one fast tracked, psychiatric sign off?

Shelefttheweb · 15/11/2022 00:14

Liposuction, facelift, and boob job would provide me with a prophylactic against distress...

Shelefttheweb · 15/11/2022 00:16

Ah, Sturgeon can then blame westminster/the English again.

filphone · 15/11/2022 00:24

I don't understand how this ideology has taken such a firm hold on society so quickly.

If I remember correctly the UK is a democracy where the majority rules. I don't understand how the vast majority of the public do not support this ideology but somehow it's able to take leaps and bounds like no other group before them.

Hoardasurass · 15/11/2022 00:26

This has to be some sort of sick joke surely sturgeon can't give this a green light.
I mean we have the army on standby because the SNP has fucked the NHS up so much that even the paramedics have voted to strike ffs

FarFromTheStart · 15/11/2022 00:28

ArabellaScott · 14/11/2022 22:52

'“Access to hormones and surgeries can act as a prophylactic measure against distress.'

Come again?

You n the same way I suppose as a gastric sleeve or wiring jaws closed can be used to treat anorexia.

Rainbowshit · 15/11/2022 00:31

Why? I just don't get it. Why have supposedly intelligent people lost their collective minds?

If they don't have gender dysphoria then it's not healthcare, it's cosmetic. So why should the NHS fund it?

Why When the NHS is in such a state due to underfunding and people are dying because of huge waiting lists?

This makes me so angry.

And then a few years down the line we'll be paying out compensation for the irreversible damage caused because they didn't explore any mental health issues.

JimmySnail · 15/11/2022 00:39

I’m ashamed to say I now sometimes have moments of thinking, ‘well just fucking crack on with your weird castrations and ulcerated fistulas, then’; and then I am painfully reunited with my conscience.

And I hope to god these doctors and therapists go to jail.

sosolongago · 15/11/2022 01:23

Unbelievable what the NHS wastes money on....a bit later on we taxpayers will be paying for all the compensation claims for 'abuse and mutilation' as well.
How about dealing with underlying mental health issues instead?

ResisterRex · 15/11/2022 05:55

FannyCann - that FOI!

"Budget is not yet agreed"

I bet it isn't. What are they budgeting for - the surgery and complications now, or in the future, or now, in the future and when there's compensation to pay out?
