Famous transgender people

FusionChefGeoff · 09/11/2022 21:21

DS10 has just had his transgender PHSE lesson but sounds like they're following the new guidance so it was a lot about stereotypes and gender is not the same as sex - woo hoo!

However, he started talking about famous transgender people and it made me think that I know lots of transwomen in the public eye but no transmen?

Also are there any famous transgender people just cracking on with life or are they all either sports cheats or fanatical TRAs??

Elliot (was Ellen) Page - only trans man that comes to mind, apart from the journalist who documented their pregnancy (can't remember name - Seahorse documentary)

ofwarren · 09/11/2022 21:24

Isn't one of Chers kids a trans man?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/11/2022 21:37

Transmen:

Chase Strangio, ACLU senior lawyer
Fox Fisher, photographer
Professor Stephen Whittle, Manchester Met
Buck Angel, adult entertainment actor
Freddy McConnell, Seahorse documentary maker

Yes, Chaz Bono. Wikipedia says Chaz (Chastity at birth) came out as a lesbian first, outed by the press, and Cher found that very difficult. Later Chaz's partner Joan died, and the transition came after that.

American actor, Brian Michael Smith.

One could argue forJames Barry but with a shedload of caveats, plus work done for women’s health

Brilliant list thanks will do a bit of reading about these people.

Are they all full on TRA or just getting on with life or a mix??

Also any famous transwomen that are genuinelt famous for something other than their trans status??

Wow just read up on James - sounds like a case of needs must in order to pursue chosen career rather than anything else?

Jan (James) Morris was a well known journalist who was part of the 1953 expedition to Everest and went on to write a lot of books on history and travel. The Everest stuff was pre-transition though.

Chase Strangio - full on TRA
Fox Fisher is nonbinary, I think, but female by birth. Has a partner called Owl (yes, Fox and Owl) who is nonbinary or trans and male by birth. They wrote a children's book together, I think. Fox has worked with Mermaids and been pretty vocal about trans rights.
Professor Whittle is an academic lawyer and was one of the main activists behind the GRA. Has been known to pop up here.
Buck Angel is a voice of sanity trying to push back against child transition.
Freddy tried but fortunately failed to get the law changed so transmen who gave birth could choose to be named as their children's fathers rather than mothers.

Jennifer Pritzker is another famous TW who transitioned after a very successful career. World's only transgender billionaire, according to Wikipedia.

Admiral Rachel Levine is the US Secretary of Health and transitioned at the age of 54, so well into an extremely successful career in medicine.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/11/2022 22:09

Hannah & Jake Graf are a TM/TW couple.

Verity Smith is a (very vociferous TRA) TM wheelchair rugby player - now identifies as male but decided to keep the name Verity.

MyLovelyPen · 09/11/2022 22:10

Wasn’t one of the Bond girls many years ago, trans?

MyLovelyPen · 09/11/2022 22:11

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Cossey

Treezylover · 09/11/2022 22:13

Historical, but look up the story of Ewan Forbes- a book came out last year telling about his story and it’s fascinating.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/11/2022 22:16

Freddy tried but fortunately failed to get the law changed so transmen who gave birth could choose to be named as their children's fathers rather than mothers.

I will never for the life of me understand the cognitive processes that lead somebody to reject life as a female to the extent of becoming a TM - but nevertheless still choose to go through pregnancy and birth.

Echobelly · 09/11/2022 22:17

Cher's son, Chas Bono (less well known here than US)
Lauren Cox
Wendy Carlos was one of the first transwomen to go public, and a pioneer of synthesizer music

PauliString · 09/11/2022 22:18

Ben/Barbara Barres, neuroscientist www.spectrumnews.org/news/ben-barres-transgender-scientist-shares-story/

ReunitedThorns · 09/11/2022 22:23

Most of the people mentioned on this thread are famous for being trans. Very few mentioned are famous for actually doing something. And I would argue that making a documentary or writing an article about being trans doesn't make you famous.

BuryingAcorns · 09/11/2022 22:24

I think Chris from Christine and the Queens is now a trans man or identifies as 'he'.

Elliot Page as a PP said.

Jack Monroe was/is sometimes afaik.
