Famous transgender people

FusionChefGeoff · 09/11/2022 21:21

DS10 has just had his transgender PHSE lesson but sounds like they're following the new guidance so it was a lot about stereotypes and gender is not the same as sex - woo hoo!

However, he started talking about famous transgender people and it made me think that I know lots of transwomen in the public eye but no transmen?

Also are there any famous transgender people just cracking on with life or are they all either sports cheats or fanatical TRAs??

Jk Rowling uses a male pseudonym for her Strike books....

Ffs I really wish people wouldn't transition the dead. Dr James Barry was, as others have said, a woman at a time when women men wouldn't allow women to become doctors.

This kind of historical revisionism, if carried to its natural conclusion, will see every female first wiped from the history books because "ackshually, that was really a man". Please just stop it.

Chelsea Manning, was Bradley the wiki leaks whistleblower. Now 34, she began to transition in 2010. She was in an army prison from 2010-2017.

Lauren Harries, was James. Now 44 she became famous as a child in the late 80s as an antique expert. She transitioned in 2001 and did talk shows to promote the proposal for the GRA in 2004. She was later on Big Brother.

She was the first trans person I knew in the public eye. I can still remember feeling empathy for her and being supportive of someone like her (full transition) wanting to be able to marry. (She identifies as a straight woman and this was before gay marriage was legal).

Teena Brandon / Brandon Teena wasn't really famous in her lifetime but her life story was the subject of the Hilary Swank film (she won an Oscar for) Boys Don't Cry. She was murdered aged 21.

Nadia Almada won Big Brother in 2004, not revealing to the other housemates that she had been born male.

Alexis Arquette, sibling of David, Rosanna, Patricia was in the Wedding singer as Adam Sandler's band singer George. They died in 2016 aged 47 from HIV complications. Apparently they detransitioned at some point but this was due to treatment for HIV? (Not sure of the details around this)

Philipa York, was Robert Millar the professional cyclist.

MapleLeafForever · 10/11/2022 10:43

I was going to mention Adele from Fascinating Aida, but I see someone has already mentioned her.

I find them interesting, as she's been presenting as female for a very long time, before trans rights became such a thing.

They have a couple of songs - one of them (I thikn 'Prisoner of Gender') all about her journey to transitioning, which is about liking stereotyped female things as a child etc. Another song ( can't remember the title/lyrics) but it was about girls and pressure to like pink/other stereotypes. It just struck me a little odd that they sang about both without making any connections between them. But I don't remember the details of the second song enough to comment properly.

@Treezylover and @KatMcBundleFace

Re Ewen Forbes, the author of the book discussed in the tweet Kat refers to is giving a talk about it at University of Aberdeen on Monday. Unfortunately, I can't go myself but would be interesting to hear what questions are asked afterwards.

Talk: Zoë Playdon THE HIDDEN CASE OF EWAN FORBES

14 November 2022, 19:00 - 20:30

The University of Aberdeen Museums & Special Collections is delighted to welcome academic and activist Zoë Playdon to talk about her publication 'The Hidden Case of Ewan Forbes' - a local story with international resonance - as part of this year's Book Week Scotland.

OmiOmy · 10/11/2022 11:01

Jamie Lee Curtis has a TW son, I think.

OmiOmy · 10/11/2022 11:02

Oh, doesn't Elon Musk have a child who identifies as trans?

KittenKong · 10/11/2022 12:33

There’s some actress with two adopted (little) boys - both of course identify as…

on the other hand, Brad Pitt and Richard Brandon both had tomboys who are, well girls. They never said they weren’t girls (the parents or the kids).

KittenKong · 10/11/2022 12:41

Wasn’t Faye Presto a trans woman?

landOFconfusion · 10/11/2022 13:06

BedTaker · 10/11/2022 07:23

James Barry wasn't a trans man FFS - Barry was a female sho posed as a male to get into university and become a doctor at a time when women weren't aklo

So that’s why James Barry stopped presenting as a male at the completion of his professional career as a doctor?

Oh wait. That didn’t happen. James continued living as a male through his retirement and until his death.

It’s shameful that people are prepared to delegitimise his extraordinary life.

Also a self-confessed domestic abuser. No role model for anybody. Should be in prison.

334bu · 10/11/2022 13:59

Not sure if Phillipa York should be considered a role model as they have admitted to doping with testosterone when competing in the Tour de France etc.

James Barry is an example of a highly accomplished trans man who wasn’t known to be trans during their lifetime.

Wikipedia article

Yes James was mentioned above but seeing as James can't speak due to being dead there's every chance James knew full well James was a woman but would get on better as a man as a surgeon so I don't think we can decide what James' identify actually was...

Depending on your child's age, I think it would also be helpful to point out how many of these transmen were lesbians before transition and experienced homophobia as well as misogyny. Rejecting a sexual relationship with men is possibly the ultimate gender nonconforming thing any woman can do.

Also, even now, after well over a century of women's rights campaigning, there is deeply entrenched sexism in the world, and even more so in some other countries. The person mentioned above who decided to transition while travelling in Pakistan must have found it an awful lot easier to move about freely in that part of the world using a male name and dress. Not a million miles from the decision James Barry took, surely?

100% agree - thanks to you and everyone else who's taken the time to give such a detailed set of examples and context - I'm very grateful

Ellen/Elliot page makes me so sad. Beautiful young woman who now looks gaunt, unwell and angry

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2022 14:55

I was just thinking that he? They? (Not sure which one Elliott prefers) does look quite sad and unwell now

One could argue forJames Barry but with a shedload of caveats, plus work done for women’s health

No, please don't go there. Not for a minute, even with caveats.

EndlessTea · 10/11/2022 15:11

Did anyone mention TA Martine Rothblatt net worth 380 million and highest earner in the biopharmaceuticals industry? Famed for trying to put wombs into boars I think.

Freddy McConnell was most famous for having a baby, though. I never heard of FM before an article in the paper about giving birth. The headline was something like 'man has baby'. I read out the article to my OH. It was clear that FM had been born female. 'So not a man having a baby then', said my OH.

I didn't get into the paper for having my baby
