Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer and his 99.9%

The Labour leader is desperately trying to stay on the fence with his 99.9% of women are biological women schtick.

He repeated it in the recent MN interview.

Let me be clear, as he is so fond of saying, 100% of women are biological women. And as long as you keep pandering to this alleged "0.1%", we will lose the language we need to describe us, and we will lose the right to single sex spaces. Women are a sex class. And any attempt to pretend otherwise will fall over at the first scrutiny. And you will lose the election because you have manufactured an existential crisis for women. Try harder.

Rosie. If she could get a seat (and hold it) in Kent, she could get anywhere.
But I doubt she would because common sense is too divisive.

May was very on board with updating/reviewing the GRA. She meet with stonewall while she was women minister and ruth hunt said that she met her several times and found her very supportive of trans rights. It was May who gave hunt her peerage.

If mordaunt was wasting time fannying about, i think it was as likely because of pressure from May as the LGBT advisory panel.

AutumnsCrow · 01/11/2022 14:56

Mordaunt's LGBT Advisory Panel - didn't they just fanny about with GIDS (Tavistock) rather than there being kind of 'inquiry'? Wasn't there just something about streamlining the pathway?

I was always under the impression that May wasn’t that bothered and had simply assumed it would be an nice little win (like Cameron had with gay marriage) but she wasn’t really bothered personally?

However, now that I’m typing it it’s entirely possible that scenario exists only in my head, so I will make looking into that my next ‘poking round the internet’ chore!

What they actually did?

Not sure!

AutumnsCrow · 01/11/2022 15:13

I found this by Stepanie Davies-Arai

thecritic.co.uk/why-women-dont-trust-penny-mordaunt/

Not only had no inquiry been planned, but even the research promised in the LGBT Action Plan never materialised.

TheClogLady · 01/11/2022 15:15

(I did wonder if the new adult gender ‘pilot’ schemes had something to do with this panel but that seems to be a separate, mostly-doctors group: www.england.nhs.uk/commissioning/spec-services/npc-crg/gender-dysphoria-clinical-programme/ )

TheClogLady · 01/11/2022 15:27

Gosh!

Firstly, Stephanie is awe inspiring.

Secondly, Penny Mordaunt’s leadership bid seems to be based on absolute whoppers! Fibs like that on a normie CV would have you back out the revolving door before HR had finished printing the name badge!

(lastly, tucked in there is the minutes from a meeting of the LGBT Advisory Panel - Presumably there must be more somewhere? www.gov.uk/government/publications/lgbt-advisory-panel-minutes-18-july-2019 )

Bit weird we’ve ended up having this conversation in the Starmer thread but oh well!

I suppose it’s a good reminder of enormous differences of opinion within a single party and a change of leader and a reshuffle can create a giant shift in policy.

bellinisurge · 01/11/2022 15:35

Oo, tbe TRAs have spotted Starmer's "no medical intervention without parental consent ". Wonder what he'll do when he sees how the slightest deviation from The Word gets you trashed by the TRAs.

Could the TRA's violent reaction possibly be a clever ploy for Starmer to have an excuse to roll the whole policy back? No thought not. He is not such a good strategist lol.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 01/11/2022 15:41

On present experience, Starmer's 0.1% is an underestimate of male-bodies who enter women only spaces (especially where women are most vulerable).

This is of course not including all the transwomen who 'pass' as women so completely as to be undetected.

trytopullyoursocksup · 01/11/2022 17:17

where are the TRAs kicking off?

Surely he must have known they would? he can't have thought really that it's just a matter of being decent and finding a compromise.

AlisonDonut · 01/11/2022 17:24

So funny.

My OH just told me that the TRAs are kicking off because of 'single sex spaces, adult permission/consent and men in women's sports' and that it was 'completely batshit'.

Lifelong Labour supporter, mid 50s and he left Labour last year because of this.

StillWeRise · 01/11/2022 17:43

I'd like to see this kicking off too

Owen the non parent is telling parents how to parent.
Despicable bully of a man.

FemaleAndLearning · 01/11/2022 19:07

Owen is bringing up Gillick. A Gender GP therapist is chipping in saying that social transition is good as it helps make a care plan. They are trying to say this is Starmer's belief not the party line.

DodoPatrol · 01/11/2022 19:09

Owen the non parent is telling parents how to parent.

Maybe he identifies as a parent?

Live4weekend · 01/11/2022 19:26

I'm not sure why they are talking about Gillik Competency when there is no medical intervention.

Or are Owen and his cronies not really talking about social transition as they claim to be.

bellinisurge · 01/11/2022 20:01

"Life saving" puberty blockers and all that stuff. Any parent who refuses to put their child on them is an abuser. Gillick (I was around when that happened) is about letting young girls access the Pill . Which is not the same kind of meds at all.

OP posts:
FemaleAndLearning · 01/11/2022 20:04

I think they just throw Gillick around without knowing what it actually means. Someone on his thread said that because of Kiera Bell's lawyer Gillick is at threat.

ScribblingPixie · 01/11/2022 20:12

Twitter! I just saw Mumsnet described as "a semi-fascist internet forum". The TRAs are very upset that Keir Starmer has spoken to the site.

Asdavaluesausage · 01/11/2022 20:16

The TRA are making it very clear there can be compromise aren’t they? Not even the slightest deviation from their demands.

I don't think that's a bad thing.

Their demands are extreme. They are dangerous for woman and children and they are not what the moderates in this country will accept.

The more people become aware the more they are unlikely to achieve anything.

FemaleAndLearning · 01/11/2022 20:20

Well if they start hating on Labour who will they have left on their 'side'. Let them self implode!

Indeed, I think they’re shooting themselves in the foot with their no compromise stance. Which is awesome to watch. The batshittery is becoming more obvious every day.
