To feel incredibly sorry for Eddie Izzard

I don't want to pity Eddie but I felt a wave of sadness after reading that Rosie Duffield (MP) said she would rather be arrested than refer to Eddie as a woman.

He's a bullshitter and a pisstaker. Says he 'came out as transgender 37 years ago' - total nonsense. He was always proud to be a man who wore heels, tights and makeup and that was genuinely brave of him.

I'm so proud of Rosie Duffield for refusing to go along with his self-serving lies and more power to her

He is gender fluid, I believe.
I suppose I felt sorry for him because I can't imagine how difficult it must be to identify as one gender and have lots of people tell you that you're not.

Come on. Translate that to other situations where someone might say they identify as something they quite obviously aren't.

I identify as a child, although I am an adult. I need adult women to help me with my incontinence products.
I identify as Black, although I am white. I will now be standing for election as a BAME rep in my local constituency party and I will apply for jobs reserved for a person from an ethnic minority.
I identify as disabled, although I am actually perfectly healthy. I use a wheelchair and intend to play in the Paralympics.

Every single one of the above is already happening. Almost nobody would go along with any of them. Why is it different if an adult human female says 'I identify as a man, I will swear an oath to live the rest of my life as a man so I can get a new birth certificate via a Gender Recognition Certificate and then I will head for the fertility clinic so I can become pregnant?' or if an adult human male says 'I identify as a woman and I want to be elected as an MP so I can increase the female representation in the House of Commons?'

Springtimeshowers · 27/10/2022 21:01

mumsnet is "known for being gender critical" but it doesn't mean everyone thinks that way, loads of us just can't be bothered getting into the argument/ dived up on/ shot down by a big group of intense gender critical feminists.

OoooohMatron · 27/10/2022 21:01

Well he's not a woman though is he, seeing as he's got a cock.

NCFT0922 · 27/10/2022 21:01

@ColdstreamAnnie do you even live here? Are you faced with the prospect of having this man as your local MP? Can you even begin to imagine the effects this man would have on the local area if he gets elected?

bellinisurge · 27/10/2022 21:01

@yerdaindicatesonbends absolutely no problem with him wearing dresses, make up etc. He's my age. It was a perfectly unremarkable thing in the 1980s when he and I were in our late teens and 20s.
However, invading women's single sex spaces was not. Which is what he does. And he claims not to care about pronouns but if any of us dares to call him HIM , the TRAs say we are evil bigots.
Autogynophiles like him have no right to feel proud of themselves

Baldieheid · 27/10/2022 21:02

Rosie Duffield for PM.

Asdavaluesausage · 27/10/2022 21:02

I’m with Rosie.

Quincythequince · 27/10/2022 21:02

ColdstreamAnnie · 27/10/2022 20:33

I didn't know that. That seems a shame.

Why is that a shame?

What is a shame are these hoards
of men who expect others to collude in their delusion that they are a woman, and get mad when people don’t go along with it.

‘I’m in girl mode from now on’…yeah, ok geezer!

Once a man, still a man, always a man!

Brefugee · 27/10/2022 21:02

I genuinely just wish it was socially acceptable for men to wear dresses, pretty clothes and make up if they so wished, and then perhaps we wouldn’t be where we are now. Clothes and expression have no gender, bodies do.

this - all the live long day. THIS.

When i started out in the Wonderful World of Work, back in the early 80s, i had a job in an office on a military base. Run by a retired old fart of a colonel. The PA was a wonderfully elegant lady who was off for a few months after a nasty accident, broke both legs, had pins in and horrible scars. She turned up on her first day if a beautifully cut, very expensive, ladies trouser suit. And he screamed across the car park at her to go home and put a dress on and never come to work dressed like a mechanic again. Horrendous.

We women are fairly lucky here, we can pretty much dress up, dress down, wear men's jeans and boots and whatever. If that courtesy would be extended to everyone, the world would be a better place (especially if "women's" clothes finally got useable sensible pockets)

OoooSweetChildOMine · 27/10/2022 21:03

Ya poor Eddie. It's so unfair we won't all say he's a woman! SO UNFAIR!

Winterscomingagain · 27/10/2022 21:04

There so many other things to be saddened by. I'd feel quite differently if this were a young person going through a crisis but I think he's quite self assured.

JingoBongo · 27/10/2022 21:04

Eddie is a man. I will never refer to him as a woman, ever.

TheRealShedSadie · 27/10/2022 21:04

I used to see Eddie regularly where I worked in the 90’s. He absolutely relished dressing up, heels nails, make up the whole works. He also was always clear that he is male and men could wear what the hell they liked. Good for him. He got a lot of attention and it made him stand out in his career as a comedian and a ‘personality’.

This recent phase of calling himself a woman appears to be getting attention too. Same old Eddie, new shiny pronouns and another bite of the publicity cherry.

Exactly.
He was a gender bender - wore ‘women’s clothes’ or as he rightly said ‘my clothes’

Now look at the state of him.

He even jogs with his fake tits on!

Even my own mum doesn’t wear her fake boobs unless she’s out and about and wants her clothes to hang better (double mastectomy in case anyone is wondering).

NotTerfNorCis · 27/10/2022 21:05

Eddie is an ambassador for an ideology that claims you can choose to be male, female, both or neither, based on social stereotypes and emotions. It's regressive and counter-feminist. Eddie gets no sympathy from me.

FaceLikeASmackedArse · 27/10/2022 21:05

I agree with Rosie too. I don't give one flying fuck if people with penises want to wear stereotypical 'feminine' clothing or makeup, or high heels, or have long hair, or have their nails done, or whatever is considered feminine. I just don't care.

But if you developed in your mothers womb with XY chromosomes it determined your sex.. you were bestowed with male genitals, male hormones and a male body structure. You are a man. By all means, if a man feels more comfortable in a dress and heels and enjoys makeup, I just don't give a shiny shit. Genuinely, I'm not bothered. It's just clothes.

But.men stomped out women's rights with their masculinity for fucking years with their overpowering physical violence and dominance. But thanks to our ancestors, it is being bit-by-bit beaten back. But now they've found a new way...now they want to stomp all over us again by being male but 'identifying' as female. But only as & when it suits them.

Trying to out perform women in womens sport. Attacking women in their womens-only spaces. Even claiming 'woman of the year' awards!

No, sorry. They can wear and act however they feel. But men aren't women. And they don't get to decide when they want to enjoy mens rights and when they want to feel the plight of women's woes.

I'm disappointed in Eddie tbh. I loved who he was before. Just a man who loved to dress however he pleased with nothing else behind it. Now he's gone down this route. It's so tedious.

QuebecBagnet · 27/10/2022 21:05

I’d love to know what “girl mode” is. Can we also take off and put on our biological sex when it suits us? Or is it just biological men who have this privilege?

Asdavaluesausage · 27/10/2022 21:05

Lockheart · 27/10/2022 21:02

But I have to ask again, when has he demanded to be called a woman? Or demand that people use she/her pronouns for him?

Hasn’t he just reported an mp to the police for misgendering him?

Anothernamechange3 · 27/10/2022 21:06

I’ve been here a long time and have read a lot of stuff that has helped me understand this situation, but to be fair I think a lot of us have admitted that ops position is where we started out. We’ve had years of coming to terms with what it all means and are rightly angry when an op like this is posted. But I can see how it can look to a newcomer like we’re just angry and harsh. I think op is so close to understanding why we’re cross (unless they’re just a troll). Everything people are saying on this thread seems obvious and straight forward common sense to me now, but I can see how it could seem radical to someone who is quite new to understanding why women are struggling with calling Eddie ‘she’.

Whatthefunkingfunk · 27/10/2022 21:06

I’m with Rosie 100%
I certainly do not feel sorry for Eddie. and I have no doubt that Eddie isn’t remotely interested in what Rosie or any other women think about all this.
I’m completely confused by their choice to stand as a female M.P. I hear in a recent interview they said they liked to switch between “girl mode” and “boy mode” so how is it that they have now landed on female as their choice for election? And why? Does that mean when in “boy mode” they won’t in fact be an elected M.P.? Until they switch to “girl mode” again? have they now settled for the
foreseeable as “girl mode”
also what’s going on with girl mode? shouldn’t it be woman mode?
So so bored of all this. I’d really like to see Labour support women, reinstate all women short lists, so that women can have some decent proper representation by people who fully know and understand the lived experiences of women and girls in this country.
Labour are fools if they think this won’t negatively impact the next election, the race is by no means run. I’m an ex Liverpudlian Labour voter because of all this. And I won’t be selling my teenage daughter’s rights down the Swanny for Kier Starmer.

dandelionthistle · 27/10/2022 21:06

YABU.

At the same time, broadly I feel sympathetic to many individual people getting personally caught up in heated debates. I can understand a spasm of pity from this perspective. But actually for me, still no, because Izzard has inexplicably sought this particular limelight. I'm disappointed as I celebrated him as a GNC man, and I find it quite weird that Izzard doesn't particularly seem to take Izzard's own femaleness too seriously, but the new religion insists that we must all take it terribly terribly seriously no matter what. 'People are who they say they are' and all that.

I hugely admire Rosie. She's been very brave when few others in her profession can say the same.

QuebecBagnet · 27/10/2022 21:06

And I totally agree that gender stereotypes are regressive and no neither sex any favours.

Quincythequince · 27/10/2022 21:07

Lockheart · 27/10/2022 21:02

He promulgated the worst of gender stereotypes when he says he’s in girl mode.

Have you not read his quotes.

He uses ladies, single sex, loos.

He was proud of scaring some young girls in a public toilet years ago whilst being his authentic self.

Yeah, he can fuck right off.
