Mordaunt out, Sunak in: a good result (I hope)

That's it, really. I'm not a Tory but I was desperately hoping for someone sensible to be in charge for the next two years.

Liz Truss very disappointing on this issue (wasting Kemi's talents on a trade post) - glad she's gone.

Boris would have caused more chaos.

Penny... well, need I say more.

Finally feel I can breathe!

Oh dear if thats true about the education secretary.
But putting KB in women & equalities, given how outspoken she was on this, suggests a direction that the sunak government is going to take. Surely its a really good sign? Or maybe it means sunak actually isn't very interested the sex v gender identity policy issues, and his thinking on it is superficial?

JustSpeculation · 25/10/2022 18:43

Badenoch gets equalities.

LizzieSiddal · 25/10/2022 18:44

@mcduffy can you remember how long ago you saw Gillian Keenan’s tweet? I’m just wondering if she’s heard all the recent news about Stonewall and Mermaids and may have changed her mind.

By all means, feel free to ignore the female PM who was in power for 11 years!

No, what’s hilarious is that the best Labour can offer is a leader afraid to say a woman has a cervix and EI in your nan’s frock who claims to be in girl mode some of the time…

At least it would be hilarious if it wasn’t so desperately awful for women and girls 😟

PM Johnson struggled with the :Woman" question. The interview mentioned happened a week after Starmer's. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1501654/Boris-Johnson-GB-News-latest-Conservative-Party-speech-woke-cancel-culture-woman-cervix-vn/amp

The Tories are just as TWAW as any other party, they're just better at hiding it so they can use it as Culture war. They are the party who keep putting men in women's prisons and have said they're not going to stop.

Manderleyagain · 25/10/2022 18:48

Is braverman responsible for prisons ultimately? As she's home secretary?

I looked up gillian keegan on this board. This is the only place I can find her mentioned before:

TheClogLady · 25/10/2022 18:57

Policing comes under the Home Secretary remit, but I think prisons are the domain of the Secretary of State for Justice/Lord Chancellor?

MrJi · 25/10/2022 18:57

Whippet · 24/10/2022 16:11

Is also pretty cool to have our first Hindu and first Asian PM.

Agree. Find it rather ironic that it is the Conservative party that has delivered on both female and ethnic minority PMs now though!
Labour can hardly claim to be the party of diversity really.

I was so hopeful he would get in after Boris, he was so obviously the best option, then they picked Liz Truss !

Keegan source might be this:

chichesterlgbt.wordpress.com/2020/07/09/response-from-gillian-keegan-mp/

But the appointment of Badenoch as Minister for Women and Equalities is causing upset:

Didn't the "women" bit get dumped under Truss? Other GC appointments would be Braverman and Donelan. Plus the new NHS service consultation and whatever the Cass Review says when it's finished seems the direction is set.

GCAcademic · 25/10/2022 19:09

Didn't the "women" bit get dumped under Truss?

Yes it did.

Cailleach1 · 25/10/2022 19:11

Is Mordaunt really a 'trained Navy Officer'? I saw a remark to that effect.

Then I saw this In 2022, George Freeman MP incorrectly claimed that Mordaunt had fought in the navy, with a navy source responding by saying that Mordaunt is not currently "a trained or paid reservist, she's never qualified or commissioned. She’s been banging the naval drum for days and enough is enough. How she has presented herself – and how she has allowed herself to be presented – have been deeply misleading.

How and when did Mordaunt come to “serve” on HMS Albion, as the service charities’ website stated? Only one such episode appears to be publicly documented and it seems highly probable that this is the basis of the website’s information. In June 2019, during her brief 85-day tenure as Secretary of State for Defence, Mordaunt travelled to a NATO conference and then to the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda, where HMS Albion was posted as part of a Baltic exercise of the 9-nation Joint Expeditionary Force [JEF]. Mordaunt there met with ministers of the other nations aboard the Albion.

^The reports show that Mordaunt’s brief period aboard Albion was undertaken in a ministerial, not in a military service capacity. Mordaunt had been appointed as an Honorary RN Commander in April 2019 and was promoted to Captain (with no apparent fanfare or publicity) a few weeks ago.
An honorary service commission is an honour, not a substantive rank. It is not awarded as a form of promotion to career military but to people of public distinction from other backgrounds.^ e.g. Daniel Craig (actor) received it as well.

northeastbylines.co.uk/from-bulwark-to-albion-penny-mordaunts-naval-service/

Is there some truth behind the 'trained Navy Officer' bit, or is it completely embroidered?

Snoozer11 · 25/10/2022 19:12

I think a poor grasp of reality and truthfulness runs in the Mordaunt family.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 25/10/2022 19:15

And lest we forget Penny's personal level of responsibility for the dire situation that women and children find ourselves in, this is damning reminder:

Prisons are justice. There is a dedicated junior minister for prisons in the justice department.

I don't know who that will be by the end of the day though.

Yes, that source. Two years ago so hopefully something has shifted

Pleased to see David TC Davies has been given the role of Welsh Secretary. He was one of the first Conservative MPs to take women's safeguarding concerns seriously during a Mumsnet online chat back in the early days.
Great news about Badenoch and Braverman.....just the Education Secretary who may be a concern on gender issues, which would be a shame given how much still needs to be rolled back in Education.

Quite clear education is getting a shit deal from this reshuffle. But it also means the secretary will have to tow the party line to get pretty much anything for her department...

Manderleyagain · 25/10/2022 19:34

This is from gillian keegan Web site, on the GRA. Presumably in 2020.

"I recognise that more must be done to help transgender people with the unique and difficult challenges that they face. Trans women are women and trans people deserve equal and fair access to healthcare, safe spaces, and opportunities, as well as to live their life with dignity.

I know that colleagues in the Government Equalities Office have been doing a lot of work on this recently to form their response to the consultation. Understandably, the Coronavirus outbreak has complicated things somewhat, but I have received reassurances from the department that they plan to publish their response in the summer. I do not wish to pre-empt the consultation response but will take the time to study the detail of it in due course.

I look forward to continuing my engagement with Chichester LGBT and to attending Chichester Pride when it’s possible after the inaugural event was postponed due to Coronavirus."

I wonder what happened after she had studied the detail of the consultation. I wonder if she ever mentioned again?

In that first paragraph, the only thing I disagree with is 'twaw' which is as much a political slogan as anything. I could say the rest if it and mean it. But it depends on what she actually means by access to safe spaces.

Its not a good sign for education minister. Even at that late stage she was still blathering twaw. But actually it's a mistake that the lgbt campaigners have made to emphasise the importance of parroting specific slogans instead of saying meaningful things. It covers up the fact that she isn't actually saying anything.

Get away with your nuance TheClogLady, there's only one question this thread must address: how evil are Tories on a scale of 1 to 100? There must be no thinking beyond that.

How evil are Labour wanting to replace women? You hear Starmer going on that he doesn’t even know what a woman is. If Labour get it the left will want to cut off the basic human rights women have campaigned for for a century. They are perfectly evil and want to destroy our way of life. If you don’t believe that you have your head in the wrong p,ace.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 25/10/2022 09:19

With regards to the budget talk - this may come back to bite me but as a carer on UC I benefited from Sunak's policy of an extra £20 a week for 18 months during the pandemic so I'm really not convinced by the fearmongering, particularly as Labour's Reeves has repeatedly stated she will crack down on welfare claimants. Any government MUST give support for energy costs and I'd much prefer the original Tory plan than the awful 6 month Labour copy Hunt just brought in. The NHS scaremongering is just that. We'll see anyway.

The other thing I would point out, again, is that Labour would not be dealing with a substantially different financial landscape.

I think people would find a Labour budget would look a lot more like a Conservative budget than they imagine.

LizzieSiddal · 25/10/2022 20:50

@Imnobody4 very interesting Twitter Link.

In the last paragraph she says they are looking forward to receiving the full Cass Report for “information and recommendations on what we should do”.

That's interesting. It's very general but Cass isn't finished and it's a distance from the TWAW line

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/10/2022 23:53

Keegan has close ties with Justine Greening. She credits her as her as a mentor.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/10/2022 08:08

Women who have met with Gillian Keegan more recently say she gets the concerns, so hopefully she isn't as much as a patsy for the trans lobby as Benjamin Cohen thinks.

Glad someone else spotted this. Not just "one of the first" but THE first, if memory serves me correctly. Back in 2017, he was taking an interest in this when no other MP was speaking out. In fact, when Venice Allan had her meeting at Millwall FC cancelled after threats by TRAs, he stepped up and allowed her to hold her meeting in the House of Commons.
