Starmer asked about women's rights & EI

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/10/2022 11:38

Keir Starmer was on Nick Ferrari's show on LBC this morning (videos available on YouTube, question from Vicki about 12:28 in).

He was sounding fairly good until the '... but...'

He wouldn't answer the question on EI at all.

I just came on to post about this. Very very clear where Labour stand on this and its frightening.

Evidently a small % of people don't 'identify with the gender they were born into' and parents of teenagers are confused and concerned and they can't get the medical treatment they want.

Oh my God, they will

AthenaWhite · 24/10/2022 11:42

It was Be Kind wasn't it. I acknowledge the majority of women know what a woman is but there are some sad males so can you just ignore safeguarding/dignity/privacy/fairness and safety when they want.

cosmiccosmos · 24/10/2022 11:42

Sorry pressed too soon.

They will take us back to the dark ages with womens rights.

He also said the GRA needs to be modernised. If I had any doubts before this has absolutely done it for me, Labour are an anti-women party.

Righthandcider · 24/10/2022 11:46

Surprising really for a party that has had so many female leaders.

Oh, sorry, wait a minute...

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/10/2022 11:59

I felt it was the same old trying to have it both ways, or as us oldies used to hear it described in politicial commentary, 'fudge & mudge' (which probably has some obscene definition in the Urban Dictionary these days).

You can either accept that 'woman' & 'man' have a biological basis & organise society from that OR you can organise society based on an undefined notion of gender. You can't do both.

You can either support single sex spaces OR you can let people of the opposite sex into them. You can't do both.

I don't want Labour to get in. They'd destroy women's rights.

He wouldnt talk about individuals and couldnt talk about the priciples of AWS.

He seems to see womens needs in terms of safety only, and not dignity, class, or opportunity. He also seems to believe that that saftey has to be compromised for men with gender identity.

Overall he seemed unable to understand and answer this simple question - why talk about VAWG or stressed teeanagers when asked about AWS?

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 24/10/2022 12:03

Its rich him not wanting to clarify these issues when these are policies introduced by a labour government.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 24/10/2022 12:03

What does EI mean? I've seen it used here a couple of times but have no idea. Google tells me it stands for Energy Inspectorate so Google doesn't know either.

This is a recent Joan Smith article on Starmer/Labour & women.

And AWS please? I got Amazon web services when I googled.it...

The section has been cut by LBC for twitter. Getting shared:

Starmer's middle of the road stuff is convincing no-one. The interesting thing is once again he backed Rosie and others speaking the truth about what being a woman is. This is what makes TRAs regard him as the enemy anyway.

So Labour are going to continue to struggle and this issue will come up a lot.

This is why I am not convinced that they are a shoo in at the next GE as some seem to think.

This kind of thing is going to continue to dog them. And the public is becoming more and more aware of it. And while many people aren't highly invested in it, the way these conversations go make him, and the party, look incredibly untenable as a decision maker.

Two more years of this, and someone relatively stable at the helm of the CP, and voters may feel differently.

Weonlyhavealoanofit · 24/10/2022 12:27

I’m not a fan of Starmer’s and I detest the Conservative party, but I’ll give him one thing, he gives interviews on radio and tv stations irrespective of their political bent. When did you last hear the leader of the Conservative party on James 0’Brien or Channel 4? The transgender issue ‘what is a man, what is a woman?’ is an entirely toxic side show to (IMO) the much bigger issue of our terminal economic decline and deeply fractured civil society. As a woman I think I can distinguish between the male and female of the species. I can also recognize that a very small group of individuals feel trapped physically, mentally and emotionally by their sex and wish to alter their appearance so as to become more like their preferred sex. I regard these people as being transsexuals. I have worked in an organization where a married man with 2 children, decided to alter his appearance through the use of surgery and drugs, so as to live more ‘authentically’ as a woman. I don’t know anyone who has been hostile to his decision, but I don’t know anyone in the company who sees him as a ‘woman’. They see him as a man who has transgendered.
The so called culture wars aren’t a place for rational thought and an honest use of language. This stuff is going to be used assiduously by the Daily Fail etc etc to distract the electorate.

porridgecake · 24/10/2022 12:28

EI just makes them look foolish.

porridgecake · 24/10/2022 12:31

The removal of women's long fought for sex-based rights isn't just a distraction. It will affect 51% of the population. That is before you consider the sterilisation and mutilation of children.

Smilelesstalkmore · 24/10/2022 12:33

Just watched the video, what a mealy mouthed load of shite.

Keir needs to be careful, he is alienating both women and the TRAs here. Pick a side Keir, stop being so fucking spineless! In a way I would actually have more respect for him if he came down on the TWAW, EI is a woman and should be on a AWS side, than this crap. I'm cringing for him.

HopRockers · 24/10/2022 12:33

"we've been so good to you bloody women that you nearly have equality so you should be grateful" (& what about the poor men 🙄)

Iwasthebadsadone · 24/10/2022 12:34

I won’t vote for the Labour Party for this reason and intend going in and writing why across my ballot paper to spoil it. I used to be involved with the Labour movement and was proud to fight for women and gay rights. All I now see is women losing their rights and lesbians being treated appallingly.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/10/2022 12:37

He wouldn't answer the question on EI at all.

I have some sympathy with that. It's not appropriate for the leader to pick on individuals. Izzard isn't well and there is a certain amount of duty of care.

If he actually thought TWAW he'd have said yes.

Fluffymule · 24/10/2022 12:42

I find his mealy mouthed cowardice repulsive. I will never vote for him or his party while he is leader.

Indeed, I would never vote for any party that casually denigrate women's rights and ignore/enable the huge threat to children's safeguarding posed by complete capitulation to any ideology.

fromorbit · 24/10/2022 12:47

It won't change the results of the election in 2024 by much. Most Scots know the difference between men and women and they keep electing the SNP.

The economy, NHS, etc and sheer irritation with the Tories will see Labour win. However it might cost Labour an election in 2028. Because failed safeguarding results in crimes and people like Rosie will keep talking about them. People think the UK is terfy now only 4 years after it started expanding - that is only the beginning.

I mean everyday sees more people peaking. There will be a wave of detranstioners by 2028. The NHS clearly are changing.

I suspect Labour will back track on gender nonsense to some degree in power because it is a difficult divisive issue. Starmer is not Sturgeon - Reeves clearly thinks it is nonsense and she has the money.

Everything to fight for.
