Starmer asked about women's rights & EI

Keir Starmer was on Nick Ferrari's show on LBC this morning (videos available on YouTube, question from Vicki about 12:28 in).

He was sounding fairly good until the '... but...'

He wouldn't answer the question on EI at all.

FFS Keir. I want a left govt. Make it possible for women to vote for you. Just fucking say that you will protect women's rights and MEAN IT.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/10/2022 12:37

He wouldn't answer the question on EI at all.

I have some sympathy with that. It's not appropriate for the leader to pick on individuals. Izzard isn't well and there is a certain amount of duty of care.

If he actually thought TWAW he'd have said yes.

I am inclined to agree with this.

ArabellaScott · 24/10/2022 12:51

He won't answer if a man can be on an AWS.

This is going to wreck your party, Keir.

I can't do it. I can't lie. I can't pretend. It's not true. It's not right.

And no, I don't actually care about Eddie's feelings - why should I? Eddie has made it clear Eddie doesn't give a fuck about my feelings, or my daughter's, or my elderly mother's. Why are Eddie's feelings my job to care about?

HermioneWeasley · 24/10/2022 12:56

He’s such a slippery little shit. He knows exactly what this means for women and GNC kids - he just doesn’t care

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/10/2022 13:02

This is what a captured politician looks like. He'll look even more of an idiot as all the data and evidence pours out of the NHS. Why does he think GIDS has been shut down? He's trapped inside a silo over this issue - listening to frantic parents of vulnerable children & trans activists while the rest of the world looks in mounting horror at the detransitioners and the facts about sterilising children on demand.

Come on Labour party, do the basic work and educate yourselves about the horrors of GIDS and the toxic influence of certain adults, then gently lead the party back to a child centred, ethical medical service for these vulnerable children.

ResisterRex · 24/10/2022 13:02

If Izzard isn't well then why is the LP supporting the bid? Or does the duty of care not extend to that bit, only to dodging questions?

"It's a human rights issue", he said. But women don't have human rights?

More worrying is his approach to child protection from that interview:

Princessglittery · 24/10/2022 13:06

Wow, just seen the clip on twitter. He is not going anywhere the AWS and EI debate is he as he knows it’s toxic. I think he is relying on the fact it was not an AWS so EI is ok to stand.

However, he clearly has changed what he is saying I.e. not saying TWAW. I’m not sure if he has changed his views or just his language, if he was using TWAW as he thought it was a vote winner and now realised it’s not.

The difficulty is the word we are not allowed to use which separates the small number of people with gender dysphoria and the larger group of males with paraphillia’s. The latter are the group that are vocal but incompatible if you also believe in stopping VAWG.

nilsmousehammer · 24/10/2022 13:10

Not even the guts to talk about and defend what he claims to believe in.

So he's either a coward or a liar in that he doesn't believe in it and knows it isn't defensible, but doesn't dare say so.

Or he's hoping the British people will get so desperate theyll take a chance on him, and then he can do things to them that he didn't dare talk about or justify and get a mandate for because he knew damn well it would go down like a bucket of cold sick .

I may not vote at all. I won't be voting for any of the Delusional Cowards/Pro Harming Women and Children parties. And anyone daring to whine at me that 'they're just supporting LGBT+ people' ..... I AM L. Don't you dare claim to be pulling all this shit in support of me.

I’m not a fan of Starmer’s and I detest the Conservative party, but I’ll give him one thing, he gives interviews on radio and tv stations irrespective of their political bent. When did you last hear the leader of the Conservative party on James 0’Brien or Channel 4? The transgender issue ‘what is a man, what is a woman?’ is an entirely toxic side show to (IMO) the much bigger issue of our terminal economic decline and deeply fractured civil society. As a woman I think I can distinguish between the male and female of the species. I can also recognize that a very small group of individuals feel trapped physically, mentally and emotionally by their sex and wish to alter their appearance so as to become more like their preferred sex. I regard these people as being transsexuals. I have worked in an organization where a married man with 2 children, decided to alter his appearance through the use of surgery and drugs, so as to live more ‘authentically’ as a woman. I don’t know anyone who has been hostile to his decision, but I don’t know anyone in the company who sees him as a ‘woman’. They see him as a man who has transgendered.
The so called culture wars aren’t a place for rational thought and an honest use of language. This stuff is going to be used assiduously by the Daily Fail etc etc to distract the electorate.

The transgender issue ‘what is a man, what is a woman?’ is an entirely toxic side show to (IMO)

It is possible to be concerned about the economy and about women's rights. I refuse to view women's rights as a 'toxic sideshow', much as the Labour Party would like me to do so.

I agree with you that Conservative leaders need to be interviewed by a range of people. It's appalling that they avoid interviewers like Andrew Neil because they think he'll be tough on them.

Mollyollydolly · 24/10/2022 13:18

I do wonder how many MPs who are friends of his are invested in this. Article about Neil Kinnock's grandchild in the Mail this week. I suspect there are quite a few MPs involved in this on a personal level .. it makes it hard to see clearly what's going on. Once you've encouraged your child to transition it's very hard to row back ..

EdgeOfACoin · 24/10/2022 13:19

"GRA Reform" is Newspeak for "self-ID".

LessValuable · 24/10/2022 13:20

I saw Keir do a Q&A session when he was going for the leadership. Someone asked him a fairly generic question about the harassment that trans people face in the Labour party. Keir had absolutely no intention of being drawn into slogans or debating, on either side. He wanted to shut down the issue ASAP. I think he is, above all else, determined not to be drawn into, and inevitably swamped by, identity politics - he won't say "TWAW" but he also won't say "woman = adult human female".

Ultimately I think this will give other cabinet members in a Labour gov free rein to set policy in this area. It doesn't matter what Keir's true thoughts are, he has consciously decided not to be the one to set the tone on this.

It's a bit sad that women's rights are not sufficiently important for him to prioritize them, but plus ce change.

MichaelFabricantWig · 24/10/2022 13:22

Who is there actually left to vote for now :(

This was the Mail article re the Kinnocks
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11344003/Grandson-former-Labour-leader-Neil-Kinnock-happier-gender-transition-surgery.html
I think it's relevant because it shows the degree of capture in so many of these families.

ArabellaScott · 24/10/2022 13:23

He could quite easily have answered the question without mentioning individuals.

Here, Keir, this is all you need to say:

'Only women would be allowed to stand on an AWS. By this we mean female women, the cunty type'.

Camdenish · 24/10/2022 13:29

I’m pretty sure NK was in the pub with KS last week. I came away and looked up where NK stood on the whole GC debate hoping for some sanity. Maybe telling him even though it looks like you’ve won it’s so easy not to. Don’t mess up. Doesn’t look like it. Some people don’t learn.

We need Labour in but not this Labour. Isn’t this what Labour always do when they couldn’t lose? Shoot themselves.

Come on KS, teens are being transed in schools in your constituency, possibly in the very schools your children attend. You’re not daft, you must understand safeguarding. You must understand misogyny.

Birdsweepsin · 24/10/2022 13:30

Is it not perfectly OK to explicitly state "this is an AWS"

Or

"This is open to women and transwomen, and therefore is not an AWS, and we have no idea what we will do if a trans man turns up"

happydappy2 · 24/10/2022 13:33

He doesn't have to comment on individual cases, he could just say All Women Shortlists are specifically for those born female only.
Just like womens prisons should be for people born female only.
The feelings of one man should not over ride sensible policy making decisions. As for women having reached equality....open your eyes Kier, rape & sexual violence against women and girls is endemic in this country-we have no way near reached equality.

porridgecake · 24/10/2022 13:33

I have never voted conservative, but tbh, I really want the Cass review, the Casey review and the current significant court cases to continue and conclude before any chance of Labour getting in. All of that evidence has to make a difference surely.

Unseelie · 24/10/2022 13:42

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 24/10/2022 12:00

He wouldnt talk about individuals and couldnt talk about the priciples of AWS.

He seems to see womens needs in terms of safety only, and not dignity, class, or opportunity. He also seems to believe that that saftey has to be compromised for men with gender identity.

Overall he seemed unable to understand and answer this simple question - why talk about VAWG or stressed teeanagers when asked about AWS?

This is an important point. Dignity.

Female children are being forced to change for PE in front of biological males who identify as female, and when the girls complain to the teacher that they do not feel safe or comfortable, the girls are told to put up and shut up.

This cannot continue. We cannot stay a society that forces female children to strip in front of males, particularly within educational establishments which are supposed to have safeguarding.

If I invited some male friends around and forced DD to strip in front of them, social services would take away my children. So why is it ok for schools to do it?

Unseelie · 24/10/2022 13:44

Politics is so strange at the moment. On a personal level I like and admire Starmer and Raynor, and absolutely hate the Tories. But for policies I want a lot of what the Conservatives plan to do, and hate Labour’s plans to destroy children’s safeguarding and private education. I have no idea how I would vote if an election came soon. I’m really hoping Labour come to their senses and actually read the Cass review.

Truth is, public services like NHS are probably fucked either way.

Sigh.

FigRollsAlly · 24/10/2022 13:58

I’m not sure that KS ever said TWAW - he thinks he can get round the question by saying “Trans rights are human rights”. Just a glib phrase which he hopes will be taken to mean that it’s a human rights issue whilst not actually saying what human rights trans people don’t already have, and a way of not actually saying TWAW.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 24/10/2022 14:02

I suspect that Starmer wishes the whole issue would just go away. I don’t think he truly believes TWAW but also doesn’t appreciate the full implications of self-ID. His modus operandi is to say as little as possible and commit to as little as possible (on any policy) between now and the next election.

He believes (rightly) that Labour’s best chance of winning is simply to not be the Tories. And sometimes doing nothing is an option.

Wheresthebeach · 24/10/2022 14:06

Slippery and mealy mouthed.
Women's rights are under real threat.
A Labour government will be a nightmare for women.
