I've been giving this a lot of thought.
Firstly, I can't be outraged by someone getting their cock out on a Friday, post-watershed programme where C4 are reviving an anarchic, boundary-pushing programme from over 30 years ago. A time when C4 was really pushing the boundaries with The Word and Eurotrash, and the 'alternative' comedy scene was at full throttle. So I'm finding Helen Joyce's protestations of a 'sex crime' being committed, a bit OTT in this context (sorry Helen)
Secondly, I found Jordan's whole act rather nostalgic (in keeping with the whole show). Here was, what seemed like to me (and I'll put the words in inverted commas to stress that this is just my opinion), a good old-fashioned 'transexual', revelling in the joy of their cosmetically created, perky breasts; their own gorgeousness of coiffured hair and make-up; their ability to both f""k a woman or man, and be willingly and enthusiastically f""ed by a man. There was the tragi-com admission that their hands and feet would always give them away as a man but a 'f""k you', 'so what' and two fingers to the world about that. And the waspish, campy, bitchy humour was that of your archetypal drag-queen (y'know the type of cruel humour you hear on Ru Paul's drag race all the time and in the jokes of people like Damian Barr with his infamous balcony joke that he apologised and was forgiven for.)
I laughed out loud at the Chuckle Brothers reference 'To me, to you' and Jordan was a life force. I also laughed at the manic, rampant narcissism of 'Me, me, me' that Jordan was deliberately lampooning
So Ben Elton and C4 got to straddle the two eras by reviving a version of your unapologetic old-school trans performer while simultaneously getting with the Zeitgeist and catering for the 'new' comedy crowd who would expect trans representation on a Friday night comedy show. And Ben got the gift of being able to say 'that's what you call a knob gag' which I again laughed at.
I actually think this was quite a watershed moment. The outpouring of love and affection for Jordan from the trans community and the wider public, mean that it's obviously now OK to acknowledge that many transwomen are fully accepting of their male heritage, are proud as f""k of being what they perceive to be 'better' than women at 'being' women, and are not these downtrodden, fragile, woebegone victims that are more vulnerable than any woman in any circumstance, ever. That's been said very loudly and proudly.
And this whole egg-shell-walking-on, sex denialism culture that won't allow for anything other than the exclusivist belief that transwomen are women and transmen are men, has been thrown out of the window as far as I'm concerned. Jordan was being utterly and refreshingly honest and I felt it was a breath of fresh air - could have done without seeing their cock but hey ho!
I'm also not sure whether Jordan would be top of my list to send into primary schools as a role model for 4 year olds though...
I'd love to know what Mr Menno thinks of Jordan.
