I've just seen this on twitter.

Seeing as though mumsnet are their target market, this is very foolish of them.

I think it does underline yet again how bad a decision it is for companies whose market is pretty much exclusively with middle-aged women (of whom I count myself one!) to dabble in the political fad pet causes of young employees and interns.

If your business model relies pretty much exclusively on selling to women aged 35-70, then you need to be looking sharpish at what that market wants out of your products first and foremost (snag tights, modibodi, etc., I’m looking at you too).

One shop having a trans flag in the window has nothing to do with the current trading difficulties the company is facing.

They recently (last year) spent a lot of money opening a massive new HQ, they also spent money acquiring the Garden Trading Co, they've lost their CEO earlier this year, they have a tricky pricing point which doesn't really target any consumer bases property and they are constantly offering discounts or sales, they've been hammered by freight costs, energy costs, and wage costs, they have had supply chain issues, and most recently the cost of living slump has seen them off. In May their trading update was actually a little promising but their position has been shaky for a while.

Basically they spent a lot of capital a very unlucky time and can't recover in the current economic climate. The few sales they will have lost from the incident this thread was started for will have had no impact.

I wonder how successful a clothing company that proudly emphasised their single sex changing rooms would fare compared to those who go the other way. I reckon they'd get a lot of extra support tbh.

Both Molke and Snag cater to trans and cross-dressing customers as well as middle-aged women and they seem to be doing OK.

Really don't like the glee at people potentially losing their jobs just because one shop did something people didn't like. Retail bankruptcies and closures disproportionately affect women at all levels, from shop floor to call centre to manufacturing.

ArabellaScott · 14/11/2022 16:11

Where is this 'glee'?

FortunesFavour · 14/11/2022 22:10

There is precisely no “glee” in the posts above @YouHaveAnArse. There are posters expressing concern for those losing their jobs, and one poster who made a tongue in cheek
comment but clarified they get sad for the employees. Where is the glee that is upsetting you?

And many of us here read the business pages. Talk about mansplaining.

a) what man?

b) I was responding to a poster who apparently doesn't. Not you.

That's so random it's absolutely likely to be a member of staff rather than an official position.

I'm not convinced Joules will still be with us this time next year though anyway. I think they are really struggling financially.

Called it....

Did you not read the posts above mine that clarified that we all know that Joules didn’t go under because of the trans flag thing? Assuming that I “apparently don’t” know this is, yes, humourless over-explaining. We’re all aware of this —I was posting on another thread this morning about Joules’s bad business decisions regarding their website offer going back several years. Do you think we’re all idiots?

Are there people who think that one store manager in one store making the choice to show one flag in one window has anything at all to do with the collapse of an entire company?

No

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 15/11/2022 07:50

One poster described it as "delicious irony".

No

Clearly you've not been on Twitter in the last 24 hours!

Yes

and then clarified that she was sorry for the workers

and still no one on here said it was ‘good’ that women were losing their jobs…

and quite obviously lockhart im replying to posts on mumsnet about what i assume is mumsnet

if people have seen something on twitter it would be helpful if they pointed that out

No. I thought we were talking about this thread, not Twitter.

PriamFarrl · 15/11/2022 08:18

Well I’ve just had a look at Twitter and aside from that one post that is up thread it seems to be a lot of nothing.

Brefugee · 15/11/2022 08:27

The only inference I might draw is that organisations that are not functioning
well are sometimes more susceptible to poor decision making.

that's an excellent point.

Lockheart · 15/11/2022 08:30

The Twitter comment was tongue in cheek, but sadly not wrong (please see following post and replies):

I suggest you read what you're actually posting! That screenshot refers to someone saying "good" that women were boycotting Joules due to the anti-feminist incident. Should consumers not be allowed to boycott now? It's hardly connected to a nationwide company going under.

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2022 09:24

Fuck me, you can't berate women on here for something some random said on Twitter! Focus!

Eh? I'm not berating anyone.

Not sure she’s talking about you lockhart
