Hospital refuses to operate after woman requests all-female care

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11316141/Hospital-bans-sex-assault-victim-op-female-care-request.html

I feel quite sick at this.

She was stunned then to receive an email from the hospital's chief executive Maxine Estop Green telling her the operation was off.

She told her the hospital 'did not share her beliefs' and she should make alternative arrangements for her surgery.

The message added the hospital was committed to protecting staff from what it described as 'unacceptable distress'.

Emma urged them to reconsider, adding in a further message she thought they had misunderstood her requests, which she said were entirely within the law.

The hospital said it would offer a private room but would NOT facilitate her requests for single-sex care after her operation.

It also mentioned her comment about pronouns and said it had a responsibility to protect staff from 'discrimination and harassment'.

I don't think that is true Strange. The patient was having some sort of a screening/procedure involving intimate care. The door (with room views straight out on to a corridor) was opened by the person the patient perceived as male (granted with a syrup) for which the patient could see no obvious reason. So, this person doesn't appear to have any connection with the treatment of the patient. There was no screening, so the patient was vulnerable to being viewed by those in the open doorway/corridor.

It is in the letter a few pages back.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/10/2022 22:55

It's 99/100 very obvious when someone is a male presenting as their idea of a woman, rather than a woman.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/10/2022 22:58

I also wonder if the "male" she is on about in a wig happens to be a biological female who has now been insulted by the patient.

I highly doubt it.

And the behaviour of this person, as described by the patient, seems to have been highly inappropriate, whatever their sex or gender

Then it would have been logical for the hospital to point this out as what better way to prove the silly woman is wrong, as clearly they wanted to do.

FemaleAndLearning · 19/10/2022 23:16

I am so angry for this woman and it is so scary how so many people on this thread think she was being entitled to ask for female only care.
The bare bones of it is that due to her sexual assault she required privacy and dignity. She expressed that view and was tormented by a man who said he was a woman. This man entered her assessment room where he likely knew she would be having an intimate swab at some point. He did this, in my opinion, because he felt entitled to do so and wanted to teach her a kesson. Instead of showing this woman care, compassion and understanding due to her trauma, the hospital wrote down in black and white that they had cancelled her surgery BECAUSE of her beliefs that they did not share.

It doesn't matter if they did or did not have the female staff, it doesn't matter if they did or did not have single sex ICUs, it doesn't matter if it is NHS or private medical care, it doesn't matter if you are fine with males giving you intimate care even if you are a female victim of sexual assault, it doesn't matter because non of that is relevant. What matters is that they did not agree with her beliefs and because of that they cancelled her operation.

I wonder what other operations they have cancelled because they do not share the beliefs of the patient?

Thelnebriati · 19/10/2022 23:25

Strangeways19
Because the nurse who this patient considered to be trans was treating her. And the patient didn't like this.
I guess it would be considered discriminatory to refuse to see a professional based on their gender alone.

You guess wrong. Medical care is given with the consent of the patient. The patients needs are supposed to be paramount, we don't exist to validate staff.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 19/10/2022 23:34

to refuse to see a professional based on their gender alone.

This is bollocks even by TRA logic surely?

According to TRA logic, transwomen share a “gender” with women, and she’s not refusing intimate care from women so how is it based on “gender?” It’s based on sex. Duh.

Datun · 19/10/2022 23:45

This.

And I hope she nails them over it. And that the message reverberates deafeningly around every hospital in the country.

Mummysharkdoodoodoodoodoodoo · 19/10/2022 23:58

I came here to start this exact thread. This is absolutely disgusting. I can’t even find words to explain how awful this is, it’s almost beyond belief.

CristinaNov182 · 19/10/2022 23:59

Even if she does, her health has worsened, the hospital has punished her and many women will be silenced in future, and are probably silenced right now in places like Canada etc. To expose yourself to non consensual intimate care or to worsen your health?

But while women suffer physical consequences we must make sure people with penises don’t get their feelings hurt.

I hope women get mad about this, because it looks like we are being taken for fools.

I hope every woman now will speak up, to friends, family, about what is going on. That we protest the lack of single sex services everywhere we see them. That we ask what our children learn in school and challenge sexist stereotypes raised to “identities” and so on.

the time has passed where we could be cowered into silence with insults or even threats to our livelihood bc this will impact every single one of us at some point and this is the legacy we are leaving our daughters if we don’t fight it now

time to get angry and stay angry

beastlyslumber · 20/10/2022 00:02

I'm horrified and disgusted by this. That poor woman. I hope the hospital are sued into oblivion. They are willing to sacrifice her health and potentially her life in order to appease a narcissistic male.

The level of trauma this woman must be experiencing.

Caroffee · 20/10/2022 00:03

CaronPoivre · 19/10/2022 17:57

We know the Princess Grace is a very expensive private hospital and not part of the NHS, don't we?

Even worse. It means thar patients can't even pay to have same-sex care.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/10/2022 00:04

He did this, in my opinion, because he felt entitled to do so and wanted to teach her a kesson.

I agree, it's not the first time I've come across similar behaviour by these male people, by any means.

Hoardasurass · 20/10/2022 00:18

If this poor woman dies earlier than she would have had she had the canceled operation could the hospital administrator's be prosecuted for corporate manslaughter?
I ask this not to be ghoulish but because if I read the twitter thread correctly she is now to sick for even the (not recommended) open procedure which (IANAL) would mean that this could be argued is a direct result of the hospitals illegal discrimination and personally I think that the people responsible for this should be in jail

StellaAndCrow · 20/10/2022 00:19

And why would a health professional or carer EVER want to care for a patient who didn't want them to? My male friend is a nurse - he always checks if patients are happy with him or would prefer a female, and certainly wouldn't feel personally offended - he (like most nurses) wants the best for patients and wants them to be comfortable.

Rainbowshit · 20/10/2022 00:22

This is appalling. Every time I have had medical care the person giving care has made sure I consent. Whether that is having a vaccination, a mammogram, counselling, I have always been asked whether I want a chaperone, whether I want a female. My bodily autonomy has been paramount.

I hope she sues them.

Helleofabore · 20/10/2022 02:01

The chilling effect of this hospital’s reaction is immense.

TreeFishFrog · 20/10/2022 02:57

@OdeToOceans 'we are Jewish, our GP is Jewish and thus understands that telling me to use condoms for contraception is very pointless.'

why is this the case? (please forgive my ignorance!)

Delphinium20 · 20/10/2022 03:09

I am seething on this woman's behalf. Up until a half second ago, everyone understood that a woman might not like to be treated by a male doctor or change her clothes next to a male stranger.

Just this year, I took a female relative to an ER after a bus accident. She is a rape survivor and as they feared her uterus was perforated, they needed to do a scan and a pelvic as she was bleeding when it wasn't her period. We requested a female physician if possible, but none were on staff. But they were ever so understanding, allowing me and two female nurses in the room w/ her and he talked her through everything, apologizing there was no female doc on that night. Everyone understood.

People are lying if they say they don't understand why a woman would request a female doctor. This has always been known. I'm so sick of the gaslighting. So sick of it.

The breathtaking speed and fury with which some have shown up here to tell us all how little this gravely ill woman's feelings matter compared to those of any male HCP who declares an invisible, untestable gender identity...

Wow. Just wow.

I don’t see any fury

Coyoacan · 20/10/2022 03:38

I hope she sues them

I hope she lives to sue them.

Dolally34 · 20/10/2022 03:48

I'm not surprised, Sarah Muirhead-Allwood is one of PGHs leading surgeons. The hospital would take this stance.,

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/10/2022 04:14

I read all the emails sent by the female patient to the hospital, and their responses.

She said that she is willing for male consultants to provide her with care, but she wants nurses, support staff etc to be biological females. She's not refusing all care whatsoever from men - but I guess the potentially intimate and regular nature of the care she might need in ICU from nursing and support staff is the reason why she's requested female-only staff. And given her history of sexual assault, it's an even higher priority for her.

If the hospital felt they couldn't acquiesce, surely the most appropriate response would be to contact her and explain what they COULD provide and how her dignity would be respected? Just cancelling what sounds like quite a gruelling operation two days in advance and on a Friday evening with no opportunity for her to challenge/discuss feels unnecessarily cruel and excessive. But hey, it's just another hysterical woman being annoying by demanding her privacy and sex-based rights be respected so who cares, right?!

I hope she kicks their arse legally.

I don't understand this.

Why would having a transsexual surgeon amongst their staff make them refuse to operate on a woman who wanted female nurses to care for her?
