Well that's one less beardy man on there defending rape and death threats.

Graham Norton thinks so little of women that he doesn't even think women can be 'experts' in issues that directly affect women.

In fact, i think the problem is that I don't think he has even given a single moments thought to how trans ideology might even affect women. That's how little he thinks of women.

And when people like JKR speak out about it, it's just mere noise to him, which is why he hasn't actually listened to what she has been saying about it.

"I think his stepping away from Twitter is more to do with him having been recently exposed for dressing up in a naked fat suit to take the piss out of Jade Goody, complete with toothpaste on his mouth to resemble semen. He probably hoped that people would forget all about that appalling display of misogyny."

What the fuck?!

Are you kidding?
Norton dressed up as a woman and mother that has died from cancer?

If that is true he should never work in the public eye again. That is despicable.

Has anyone got a link?

ArabellaScott · 17/10/2022 16:41

There's a photo upthread. Gross.

Talk to the experts, not celebrities.

Rowling is an expert in being an abused female in need of female services, and using them. And in being female. And in experiencing the most appalling behaviour of the political TQ+ lobby.

Yes, she's bloody inconvenient because of it, but what 'expert' would speak better for her? The male head of the rape services who says females like her can only have help from their service if they agree to conversion therapy to TQ+ male centric compliance first?

I have had two babies. I have lived experience of childbirth and accessing maternity services. I am not an expert.

I have followed formula one passionately for over 25 years. I'm well informed and know more than most fans. I'm not an expert.

I worked as a pensions actuary for years. I knew the regulations, had professional qualifications and obligations. I was a minor league expert.

JKR is not an expert on this topic. Most posters on here would not call someone with her credentials and expert if it were any other person and any other topic.

heathspeedwell · 17/10/2022 16:41

Here's the image of Norton dressed as Jade Goody again for anyone who missed it. Knowing she had two young children he still thought it was hilarious to smear toothpaste on his mouth (it was supposed to represent semen) to laugh at her.

Kissingfrogs25 · 17/10/2022 16:41

Free speech clearly only belongs to men.

It was when Jade was in the Big Brother house, not after she died.

I'm not really here for dredging up shit from the past to try and discredit someone just because I don't agree with them though.

I just think GN is another one of those blokes that just doesn't really give much thought to women.

OldCrone · 17/10/2022 15:46

So who are the experts?

The article in the Irish Independent quotes him as saying: ""I’m sort of embarrassed that I‘m somehow drawn into it. If people want to shine a light on those issues – and I hope people do – talk to trans people, talk to the parents of trans kids. Talk to doctors and psychiatrists. Talk to someone who can illuminate this in some way."

Kissingfrogs25 · 17/10/2022 16:46

That is a grotesque and shocking photo on twitter.

How can he possibly work again after that?

I am horrified. WTAF is happening.
The root? Hatred of women.

Kissingfrogs25 · 17/10/2022 16:46

Even dead women are not safe.

There have been experts who have said that they are incredibly concerned about what was happening at the Tavistock. They get dismissed as 'transphobes'.

Sir Robert Winston said 'you categorically cannot change sex'. I would say he is an expert in his field isn't he?

The other thing is, trans people just don't seem willing to debate this on a public platform with someone with different views. They say its because they are 'not willing to debate their own existence', but from what I have seen, find it difficult to cope with any sort of interview or discussion that isn't just sycophantic fawning.

It was before she ever had cancer. Obviously.

heathspeedwell · 17/10/2022 16:48

The point is not that people are dredging things up from the past to discredit Norton, it's that people on Twitter are sharing questionable things he's done in the past to expose his hypocrisy in saying he believes people are 'accountable.'

He obviously doesn't want to be accountable himself, hence coming off Twitter when it's his actions in the spotlight.

With Mermaids currently being investigated and the full Cass review coming up, he'd probably rather not have the public knowing that he gave a lot of money to a vulnerable teen for a double mastectomy.

RudsyFarmer · 17/10/2022 16:49

I just don’t understand why these celebrities have to be so political. I know it’s a time where everyone has to be an activist but all he had to do was make people laugh and enjoy his lifestyle. We don’t need every person to join a side or give an opinion. Politicians avoid questions all the time. Perhaps these celebrities need to learn some reflective answers when tricky questions are asked.

BitossiBlues · 17/10/2022 16:49

Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family are experts on opioid medications. I would no more want their "expertise" on pain relief than I would want that of Stonewall, Mermaids, GenderGPs, Gendered Intelligence or any of the "expert" gender surgeons involved in I am Jazz on matters relating to biological reality.

Helleofabore · 17/10/2022 16:50

Here are her tweets to Billy Bragg that I can find from around the time of this interview.

‘Hard to think of anything that better illustrates misogyny than men complaining that a woman has a view on woman’s rights.’
8.07 pm Oct 13, 2022 with a Quote Tweet from
billybragg.

twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1580636302311325696?s=20&t=VpY5v5ECdrVbmz8ghYX3xA

You’ve compared feminists to Nazi eugenicists, Billy. You agreed with grahnort that cancel culture is merely ‘accountability’. Do you believe threats of rape and murder are acceptable ‘accountability’? 9.05 pm Oct 13, 2022.

twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1580651511981350912?s=20&t=VpY5v5ECdrVbmz8ghYX3xA

She mentions Graham Norton once mentioning his 'accountability' reference. And I assume this was his reply:

Billybragg: You may feel that my comparison of anti-trans activists is offensive, but as an opinion of a group it is very different to rape and death threats directed at an individual, which are indefensible and I am not OK with. You recognise the difference, surely? 4.03 pm Oct 14, 2022.

So, Billy Bragg doesn't deny that he has compared feminists to Nazi eugenicists, but does confirm that he finds threats indefensible.

She then posted this later that day.

Replying to billybragg
‘Self respect? From the guy who tried to use the holocaust to attack feminists? Women standing up for their rights receive constant threats of sexual violence. Some have lost jobs and been attacked at protests. Good to know you and Norton are OK with the culture, though’. 9.05 pm Oct 14, 2022.

I also have no idea how she thinks Billy Bragg supports rape and death threats just because he doesn't agree with her on trans issues. To start throwing these accusations around is pretty crap of her. Billy Bragg has been an enormous supporter of womens rights for a long time.

But it JK Rowlings words. She doesn't care when she see's the numbers on her royalty cheques.

Oh please - Billy Bragg a supporter of women's rights? Like hell he is, or are you referring to the special kind of women, the ones that are in fact male?

ScaryFaces · 17/10/2022 16:52

Norton says we should listen to experts, not celebrities.

Rowling's response: oh so you think I should be KILLED do you

Seriously, my pre-teens argue with greater nuance and sophistication than this.

IncompleteSenten · 17/10/2022 16:52

So what's the "vile" thing she said?

3timeslucky · 17/10/2022 16:53

To me that quote seems to be referring to the people who might be able to illuminate what is going on at a clinical level, talk about the experiences and beliefs of trans-identifying individuals and their families and discuss appropriate treatment paths. That's just part of the picture. Women (like JKR but also many other women) are able to (and should be able to) talk about how this new ideology and its implementation in practice and in law impacts women. Similarly those with experience in the field of safeguarding whether personally or professionally are able to (and should be able to) shine a light on the safe-guarding risks and failures in this area. JKR is not speaking because she's a celebrity but because she's a woman with direct experience of why sex segregated spaces matter. Norton is right to not get involved because he has no relevant lived experience (though arguably the re-definition of his sexual orientation "should" bother him and possibly would if he gave that aspect any thought). I'm not sure that deep thought is where he's at though. It is fine for him to bow out. But not fine for him to decide which subset of voices should be heard. He appears (not surprisingly) to be giving no thought to the impact of this area of legislation and social practice on women.

Surely "he" is a typo here and you mean "she", right?

That's exactly what GN was doing in this case. He was asked about JKR and declined to answer, saying his opinion doesn't count for anything, ask the experts.

The celebrity turned activist is JKR.

VestofAbsurdity · 17/10/2022 16:54

Sir Robert Winston said 'you categorically cannot change sex'. I would say he is an expert in his field isn't he?

And before he said it he acknowledged he will get slaughtered on Twitter and sent abuse for stating such a fact.

That is totally mischaracterising.

Norton says cancel culture is actually accountability for people with problematic views

JK Rowling says “So you think death and rape threats are accountability?”
