Sturgeon is deaf to women's concerns over self ID

Excellent article.

'If any woman or girl suffers voyeurism, sexual harassment, assault or rape in consequence of the Scottish government’s lax new rules, the blame will rest squarely with those at Holyrood who ignored safeguarding experts and women’s campaigners.'

Yes. And we will remind them.

Teenage girls having mastectomies and then regretting will also be on their conscience. Young people being sterilized. Women self excluding from public life.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 15/10/2022 18:57

Sturgeon was daft to try to take on JKR. Just daft

Hoardasurass · 15/10/2022 18:58

The Scottish government has refused to listen to women, has said that the cass review is not relevant to the sandyford clinic and that they will keep promoting mermaids until the charity commission has concluded there investigation.
This is now showing them as willfully ignoring all evidence of harm and choosing to go ahead anyway

rogdmum · 15/10/2022 19:22

Just to add to Hoard’s post, we can also write off the Office of the Children’s Commissioner who yesterday told me (after ai asked them to speak out about the inclusion of Mermaids in the ScotGov guidance to schools):

”In terms of the Scottish schools guidance, this is a Scottish Government publication and we would expect Ministers to take full account of any findings from the Charity Commission’s investigation.”

So that’ll be continued <unsurprising> silence there as well.

rogdmum · 15/10/2022 19:24

*The Scottish Office of the Children’s Commissioner, not the English one (though I believe they have been silent as well?)

ScrollingLeaves · 15/10/2022 19:31

Thank you for posting that article. It is excellent. The ideas are conveyed very simply and clearly.

I saw underneath the point made by pro-Self ID that self ID would not change the Equalities Act which says that trans people can be excluded from single sex spaces.

Why is the Equalities Act not used more often in practice? Why are rape centres, changing rooms, sports, lavatories, girl guides, short lists, not in practice allowing women-only spaces?

The only public body seems to be the Girls Day School Trust.

I am not sure about hospitals.

JellySaurus · 15/10/2022 19:41

Hospitals are also captured. There was the incident when a female patient was raped while on a women's ward, but the hospital told the police that no rape could have happened as there were no men present. (Just a patient with a very womanly penis.)

JellySaurus · 15/10/2022 19:42

If this new law cannot define 'living as a woman', how can 'fraudulent declarations' be recognised?

A prime example of the law being an ass.

Smilelesstalkmore · 15/10/2022 19:46

Oooolh, has JKR actually written for The Times (or any newspaper) before? I would certainly love to see more of this from her.

TheKeatingFive · 15/10/2022 19:52

Amazing article. She is an inspiration.

I expect Nicola is much too cowardly to respond to that head on.

InTheResistance · 15/10/2022 19:55

What a superb article. Every time I think I can't love her any more...

Smilelesstalkmore · 15/10/2022 19:56

OK, I have read the article now and wow, it's.....brilliant! What an article, it covers so much!

I literally just love this woman. I remember when she wrote her essay after she started getting so much shit for her 'people who menstruate' tweet. I will be honest and say I totally underestimated her because I expected it to say that she was very sorry and she would sign up for re-education etc, or at least there would be a significant capitulation, because that's what everyone else had done wasn't it? So I was actually pretty astonished when I found myself agreeing with every word, I remember thinking 'wow, she is not fucking about here, she is all in'.

And all in she is. Joanne, if you read Mumsnet, you are awesome!

WandaWomblesaurus · 15/10/2022 20:00

ASLAN.

Smilelesstalkmore · 15/10/2022 20:04

The thing i never really understood anyway about the GRA in the first place is how someone is allowed to falsify their birth certificate? I'm not allowed to falsify my birth certificate? I can't change it so that, for example it says I was born in a different place because inside I feel like I should have been born in that place? How is it different?

In this was trans people already have more rights that the general public because they are allowed to create a legal fiction that other people are not allowed to. Why should that be made even easier?

EndlessTea · 15/10/2022 20:06

And they can ask for ‘trans friendly’ DBS checks too… What could possibly go wrong? 🤔

RoyalCorgi · 15/10/2022 20:08

What a brilliant article. So clear and well-argued.

EndlessTea · 15/10/2022 20:09

I have a real warm glow in my heart when I think of JK - I think it is actual love.

Dammitthisisshit · 15/10/2022 20:16

Brilliant article. Exceptional woman.

bravelittletiger · 15/10/2022 20:18

What a moving and powerful article. Thank you for sharing.

WomaninBoots · 15/10/2022 20:20

What a powerhouse she is. Love her.

How can the powers that be keep just dismissing these amazing women?

beastlyslumber · 15/10/2022 20:26

Fantastic. Has JKR written for a newspaper before? She is awesome.

I wish it were the Mail, though. Or better still, the Guardian.

WandaWomblesaurus · 15/10/2022 20:27

And unlike the equally well thought out essay on her website that nobody seems to read before calling her names, many many people will be reading The Times. People will take notice.
Sturgeon will be hoist by her own rainbow leotard.

EwwSprouts · 15/10/2022 20:32

Brilliant. In tone it's in words of one syllable. Some will try to twist it but they will struggle.

TheKeatingFive · 15/10/2022 20:42

Or better still, the Guardian.

Pigs will fly before the woke bros would contemplate such a thing 🙄
