JKR being magnificent on twitter again

Just thought I'd pop this here for anyone who doesn't browse twitter regularly. I don't myself but found it via a FB group that supports JKR.

I bloody love this woman. Plus I have bought an insane amount of HP merch over the last few years in support of her, as well as the Strike books and all the new editions of HP that pop up, so I am happy to think of those royalty cheques having some of my pennies in!

She's earned every penny through her own skill and hard work. I do not begrudge her success and wealth at all. I have absolutely no problem buying the new illustrated Order of the Phoenix.

Beowulfa · 14/10/2022 08:28

I don't do Twitter so appreciate the updates.

Great to see how the minority echo chamber of nonsense-woo does not translate into cold hard sales stats.

ReeseWitherfork · 14/10/2022 08:32

Assume the tweet she is replying to says she’s lost fans. I really hope there’s a generation out there now actually ready to listen to the words she has said and take on board some of it.

I think the Billy Bragg / Graham Norton / JKR spat has an interesting point. AFAIK Graham Norton said people should take their information re: trans from experts not celebrities. And he’s completely right IMO. Just a shame that there is no “expert” able to make the statements JKR has (at the same volume) without suffering the negative consequence. I suppose JKR has the fortunate position of being rich enough that she’s untouchable (although I imagine the death threats etc do take their toll).

MrsOvertonsWindow · 14/10/2022 08:38

There's an irony when people spout the "listening to an expert" line about trans issues.
Nobody listens to women about our experiences, our wish for privacy from unknown men, our experiences of sexual assault / rape which informs our need for single sex spaces. This apparently only applies to men who wish to invade those spaces or to promote the transitioning of other people's children.
The hypocrisy is off the scale.

Nailed it.

The only bloody experts about female spaces are us women.

Absolutely extraordinary that Norton thinks the experts on female spaces should be men.

RocketPanda · 14/10/2022 08:56

My local bookshop had a very TRA manager a couple of years ago, I passed it yesterday to see a whole Robert Galbraith display in the window. Tides are turning.

B1pbop · 14/10/2022 09:01

There’s no one more expert than someone who’s outside of the experts and read them all and formed their own opinion. Gift of perspective.

bare · 14/10/2022 09:07

I'm happy for Robert Winston to be considered an expert.

Princessglittery · 14/10/2022 09:09

Just watched the Graham Norton clip and he is very self aware of the power of being on the TV and Radio gives him and how anything he says is reported. I agree he was right about experts and lived experience. He clearly is not wanting to be dragged in to the middle of a debate just because he is doing his job e.g. interviewing JKR as an author.

This is where people like JKR, Allison Bailey, I am Sarah have all had lived experience of what some male human beings can do to women and girls. They are exposing their painful history to prevent other women and girls becoming victims.

RoyalCorgi · 14/10/2022 09:13

Quite. It's so insulting. It's like saying that only experts should be allowed to have an opinion on the civil rights movement in the US, rather than the Black people who were fighting for their rights.

TheKeatingFive · 14/10/2022 09:27

I laughed so hard at that tweet. What a legend.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/10/2022 09:33

Funny how 'lived experience' makes anyone but a woman an expert.

and I can’t see Billy Bragg picking up any new fans! 😂

LizzieSiddal · 14/10/2022 09:40

What Experts is he taking about though.
Does he seriously mean the likes of SG, Adrian Harrop and the Webberlys?

It’s the calibre of “Experts” which is the problem here.

Norma27 · 14/10/2022 09:44

I was thinking earlier of somebody on a thread recently saying everybody under 30 hated JKR and Harry Potter
My youngest is at primary school and was telling me today about all the children arguing about who is the biggest HP fan.
I am an old parent there, but most of them are under 30 raising a new generation of HP fans!

fallinover · 14/10/2022 09:53

I work with dc.
The teens are very TRA and anti-potter if they have a strong view on HP. Many have simply outgrown it.
The dc often really like HP and have favorite characters, their parents in the huge majority have no interest in dragging their dc in the TRA world.

Musomama1 · 14/10/2022 11:09

Also, she's not operating from a silo is she? I think TRAs don't appreciate that she is getting louder and louder on twitter because of the sheer amount of people that must be contacting her, sharing their experiences and supporting her.

She must get a steady stream of emails / letters etc about all of this because of how vocal she is and how people will listen to her because of her position.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 14/10/2022 11:25

Did he really not specify what the nameless experts are expert in? Is he talking about childhood transition, in which case the experts are ringing very loud alarm bells, or experts in… being a woman?… well he obviously can’t have meant that as others have said. Just… experts? Was there a survey ?

  1. do you self-identify as an expert?
  2. are transwomen women?

result: 8 out of 10 experts think humans can change sex. Take that, GCs!

NoScooby · 14/10/2022 11:30

One of the things I found most interesting about the Mermaids/ Charity Commission hearing was that none of those giving evidence on behalf of Mermaids' position felt that they were experts on the subject - in fact they went out of their way to state "I'm not an expert" on several occasions.

If representatives of these organisations are not experts on the trans experience and childhood transition, just who is??

Yes, interesting how they are definitely the experts when it comes to bending the ear of politicians and the civil service, and "training" schools, social workers, councils etc etc, but most definitely not experts when it comes to legal liability. Hmm

My 16 year old DD has read (imagine! Actually read) what JK has said on women’s rights and spaces and says that she doesn’t think any of it is transphobic. And yes, she has trans and NB identifying friends.

ApocalipstickNow · 14/10/2022 11:56

I work in primary- Potter is still huge.

Kids love it.

Well yes, absolutely. When I said experts I meant, for example, biologists with respect to how many sexes there are. I keep seeing crap sprouted about sex being on a scale but AFAIK there are no actual biologists backing this up, quite the opposite. But no one seems to listen to them.

So yes, of course womens stories count and should be listened to. But if people think JKR is being transphobic for saying self-ID is dangerous for women because TW don’t attack women, and men don’t self-ID with the purpose of attacking women, then the least they can do is look at the data available. They don’t have to take JKR’s word for it.
