JKR being magnificent on twitter again

mobile.twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1580639051774054404?cxt=HHwWiMDS8fm1x-8rAAAA

Just thought I'd pop this here for anyone who doesn't browse twitter regularly. I don't myself but found it via a FB group that supports JKR.

I bloody love this woman. Plus I have bought an insane amount of HP merch over the last few years in support of her, as well as the Strike books and all the new editions of HP that pop up, so I am happy to think of those royalty cheques having some of my pennies in!

I once saw a Buzzfeed listicle on something like “the greatest moments from the HP books” with a big disclaimer at the top saying they don’t support JKR and they love the trans community blah blah

😂

We HATE JKR! Btw what’s your hogwarts house?

It’s just a joke. If you want to cancel somebody, you can’t keep the magical world they created while also denigrating them as an awful person.

exwhyzed · 14/10/2022 20:21

They hate her because they know she's untouchable

they can't hurt her financially, even if everyone stopped buying anything Harry Potter related she still has enough money for the rest of her life

they can't cancel her, she doesn't really need to promote anything and rarely appears in the media anyway. If she did decide she wanted to do any appearances on the talk shows all channels would be falling over themselves to have her.

she's laughing at them and pointing out the ridiculousness of it all and they can't make her apologise. Not even a little bit.

thistimelastweek · 14/10/2022 20:33

Whether or not you are pro JKR, the twitter referred to in the OP wasn't that magnificent.
Just a re-working of Liberace .

And that's a bad thing? 😂

A great paraphrase can be magnificent. Why not?

You've made a good point.

But a good paraphrase should acknowledge its source.

Anything less insults the audience.

Blah blah blah.

She's putting two fingers up at the "how could you do this to trans ppl" brigade and refusing to be guilty tripped.

She is awesome.

Indeed. Want some experts on rights for vulnerable women, speak to women and those who stand for them. That was the pushback point. Women are not speaking on trans issues, they are speaking about women and children. Who are the experts - mothers!!! Couldn't be plainer. Why can't BB and GN see that?

I have absolutely no idea what else GN has said on the issue so I may be completely off base here but…

Interviewer: “What do you make of the trans debate?”
Graham: “You’re better off speaking to experts not listening to a celebrity viewpoint.”

Instead of something along the lines of what EW and DR have said, which is the official PR line. Makes me think we may have an ally in GN. Albeit one not prepared to tank his career.

Trouble is, whoever sent this is absolutely not an ally to the cause. It’s abhorrent. And anything JKR says about it is going to be misconstrued as her taking responsibility for their actions. I have no idea who Tala the Alien is and I’m sure they’re a PITA but they have my sympathy, this must be fucking terrifying.

I read far too much of that twitter thread, and it was disturbingly twisted. Then I got to this:

"Her greatest work mocks slavery abolitionism and glorifies law enforcement.
It was staring at us the whole time."

How anyone can read HP and get that from it mystifies me! It is quite literally the opposite...

Usually some nonsense about how Dobby loves to work for only a coin a week and still serves Harry, how Winky thinks she has a great deal etc etc. Of course they are actually being represented as victims/products of the society they live in, which brutalises them. I do find a lot of these people really struggle to read below the surface though - I think they’d prefer the Full House/South Park model, where the characters all stand up holding hands at the end and say ‘now we all learned something today - the message is xyz.’

AsTreesWalking · 14/10/2022 23:49

Kanaloa, yes it's depressing isn't it? It must be so dull just reading (and living) on the surface all the time.

It’s a bit sad, but I think reading beneath the surface is a learned skill rather than an inherent ability. I always take the time when reading with the kids to ask questions etc. It’s amazing how many people at my university (studying literature) will be asked what a text is telling us and will just regurgitate the plot exactly as it’s written.

It is entirely possible it was their alternative account that sent that so they could screenshot it. Only the police and twitter can say otherwise. Contact them. Ta

That was my first thought.

Where did they get the message? Through Twitter? It looks like a text message or messenger message.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/10/2022 00:45

No idea tbh. Most of the vile stuff seems to happen on twitter. Could have been a FB type message I suppose. Either way bitching about it on here saying its an JKR follower is pointless without proof. We like evidence here thankfully.

Misstache · 15/10/2022 00:55

My sister just messaged me and said, I know I’m not supposed to like Jk Rowling or whatever but I laughed so hard when I saw her tweet. Which is also an example of how many women are actually covert terfs around people we trust.

And, I think lots of women feel that way - even if you don’t “agree” with her or understand the argument really or even take a side, it’s inspiring to see a woman give no fucks. That’s exactly why they try so desperately to smear her - it’s not even totally about Trans, it’s that women can’t be allowed to figure out that we don’t have to care what other people say about us and there’s nothing anyone can do.

WalkthisWayUK · 15/10/2022 00:59

I have to say that personally I am not really into HP and none of my children read her books.

But I absolutely hate to see people bullied and ganged up on, and JKR has been mercilessly bullied - I’m not even on twitter very much but from what I’ve seen it’s disgraceful. So for that reason I am very glad she is not backing down (as every other bullied celeb seems to have been).

Odense · 15/10/2022 01:21

The Only People With lived experience/expert Can Comment thing is gloriously hypocritical

er

just how many of us here who were tomboys and are now, gay, butch or just GNC. Saying ‘this would have been us… and we’d have regretted it‘

but no, we are bigoted terfs just trying to appropriately the true trans experience. Apparently.

FirstFallopians · 15/10/2022 01:39

Oh it does make me laugh when you see people acting as if JKR will be rooting round the sofa to find spare change on the basis that she’s pissed off the blue-hair-and-dungaree brigade.

The HP franchise is basically a license to print money at this stage. A massive “official” HP shop has just been opened in the centre of New York, there is considerable excitement about the open world Hogwarts video game coming out next Spring, and Universal Studios are adding a THIRD Wizarding World area to their new park in Orlando.

Name a high street store that you’ve been in recently that doesn’t sell some kind of HP licensed goods- Primark, Boots, M&S, even Dunelm all have branded HP stuff. People are still consuming the material in their droves.

I dunno, for all the whinging on Twitter it doesn’t seem to be translating into actual commercial consequences for JKR.

I didn’t say that. I said that if people can read JKR’s letter (which details her personal experiences) and decide she’s transphobic then they always have the option to actually move away from anecdote and read the data on male crime stats, listen to biologists etc. (i.e. go and speak to experts)

nobodygirle · 15/10/2022 06:45

Those of you defending JKs stance on trans because its a 'women's issue' (ot because you like Harry Potter) do realise that vast majority of men who want to abuse women and children don't feel the need to transition in order to do so? No, they just do it. Its not trans women who are the issue here.

Igneococcus · 15/10/2022 06:49

How are you telling predatory men entering female spaces apart from transwomen @nobodygirle ?
