Organisations that are still signposting kids to Mermaids

with recent revelations and events, I see that NHS are removing links to Mermaids. Schools have been told not to recommend Mermaids by DfE. Alot of people are commenting that their councils are removing links to Mermaids. National Lottery (and another org?) has stopped their funding to Mermaids.

however some organisations have not distanced themselves/removed links and some are doubling down on their support for Mermaids. I thought it might be useful to catalogue those organisations;

Bristol Mind have doubled down. would be interesting to see if this is the same for Mind in other areas

The British Heart Foundation are still ‘proudly supporting’ the fishy organisation. I had a big bag of stuff for their charity bin, too, before I checked, curses.

MarmaladeFatkins · 12/10/2022 09:15

meant to say in PP, someone posted on one of the other threads that we can now see failure of safeguarding IN Mermaids, but if other organisations don't act on that, then it is systemic safeguarding failure in the UK?

Gendered Intelligence is linking to Mermaids (and their Safeguarding Policy link is broken)

In Scotland we have issues with LGBT Youth Scotland who have the ear of Maggie Chapman, Karen Adam & others on the GRA reform committee. They are a toxic organization, similar to Mermaids.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/10/2022 10:32

National Autistic Society still have a link.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/10/2022 10:34

Why would the BHF have any reason to link to Mermaids? How odd.

Pr1mr0se · 12/10/2022 10:38

Poundland apparently

Pr1mr0se · 12/10/2022 10:40

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - lots of charities have linked up with them to illustrate how 'inclusive' they are (not that they'd phrase it like that themselves of course, probably).

Pr1mr0se · 12/10/2022 10:43

MarmaladeFatkins - Mind charity is linked in other areas too.

MarmaladeFatkins · 12/10/2022 10:44

yes they have @Pr1mr0se but many/most are back tracking over the last week. I think it's important to ID the organisations that work with children particularly that are still defending Mermaids and maintaining links/referral, voicing their support etc

Yes, it’s just a thoughtless desire to be seen to be in the ‘right’ set : bandwagoning. I suppose they haven’t seen the evidence on ‘puberty blockers’ and thrombosis, bit of an oversight there.*

  • The alternative is too grim to contemplate.
MarmaladeFatkins · 12/10/2022 10:45

@Pr1mr0se ignore my last message, I hadn't seen that you were responding to other posts

Off The Record in Bristol is a charity providing Mental Health services to young people in Bristol. They do joint services with NHS. Have link to Mermaids on their website

Sorry if this is a stupid/naive question.... but what is Mermaids and why is support being removed for them?

I'm guessing it's something to do with safeguarding children, but I've not heard of them before, so I have no idea what this is about, but would like to know more so I don't inadvertently support a business that still supports them!

RhannionKPSS · 12/10/2022 10:51

LGBT Youth Scotland are still signposting Mermaids to children.

RhannionKPSS · 12/10/2022 10:52

In fact they sent “ love & support “ to Mermaids after the appalling JB story broke.

Does anyone have a link/ document/ letter template that can be sent to organisations to demonstrate why they should cut ties?

Tried Googling and saw the safer schools alliance template… that kind of thing but not for schools.

I’d like to email Mind but not sure how to articulate it exactly.

SalviaOfficinalis · 12/10/2022 11:03

Just to add to my post, a mental health focussed template would be good because potentially a lot of vulnerable people are being signposted to them.

Tillow4ever · 12/10/2022 11:05

Thank you!

SugarPlumFairyCakes · 12/10/2022 11:10

Warwickshire County Council and also Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust (the local mental health trust for children and adults) so by default Coventry City Council too and any charities/organisations that have services commissioned by them.

MarmaladeFatkins · 12/10/2022 11:13

@SalviaOfficinalis besides all the stuff that has come out over the last week, Mermaids signpost kids to GenderGP, run by the Webberleys one of whom was struck off and one suspended. I believe they left the UK to be able to continue providing drugs to young kids which are not prescribed in the UK (if I understood that correctly). I wouldnt have thought that Mind would want to be involved with that
