Organisations that are still signposting kids to Mermaids

with recent revelations and events, I see that NHS are removing links to Mermaids. Schools have been told not to recommend Mermaids by DfE. Alot of people are commenting that their councils are removing links to Mermaids. National Lottery (and another org?) has stopped their funding to Mermaids.

however some organisations have not distanced themselves/removed links and some are doubling down on their support for Mermaids. I thought it might be useful to catalogue those organisations;

"I see that NHS are removing links to Mermaids."

One branch of the NHS(not the NHS in general) made a suggestion its employees don't like to Mermaids in the meantime because of pending complaints.

"National Lottery has stopped their funding to Mermaids."

One payment has been paused because of pending complaints.

Remember nothing has actually been upheld yet.

I think given what we now know is on the internet to be found by any child being encouraged to try and find Mermaids via a search engine, nothing needs to be upheld before we ask schools and other organisations working with children to make sure they don't risk any children being exposed to for eg the pictures of Darren Mew.

No investigation needs to be concluded for it to be stated categorically that signposting young people to Mermaidsnat the moment could put them at risk.

@MarmaladeFatkins Great letter! Do we know for sure that "Mermaids also direct children to GenderGP" - is that a link from their website?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/10/2022 16:17

PS I don't think that the Webberlys still run GenderGP, though GenderGP are still not based in the UK and I wouldn't trust them to medicate a guppy never mind a child. (Judge Judy moment.)

TheClogLady · 12/10/2022 16:46

H Webberly is still all over it. Just seems to have been some shenanigans with shell companies and prescriptions signed off by a doctor in Romania.

MarmaladeFatkins · 12/10/2022 16:51

@AmaryllisNightAndDay I can't see that Mermaids link to GenderGP from their website. does that come from parents experience only? grahamlinehan.substack.com/p/a-mother-writes-to-mermaids

this article suggests Webberleys moved to Spain so they could continue to run GenderGP

I'm fairly sure Surrey County Council have updated their website in the last few days and removed references to both Mermaids and Gendered Intelligence.

I looked a few days ago and I'm sure I saw both on there. Today they are no longer there and the page says it was last updated two days ago.

National Autistic Society still have a link.

This is particularly concerning, given the added vulnerability of people with ASD, especially children.

rogdmum · 12/10/2022 19:18

Mermaids stopped signposting to GenderGP after the National Lottery dropped strong hints that they needed to. Before this, they sang GenderGP’s praises on the Youth Forum and posted the regular GenderGP newsletter etc.

Mermaids are quite strict about this (unlike LGBTYS who happily endorse GenderGP on their live chat!) and if you ask on their chat they will say (sometimes with a little 😢 ) that they can only sign post to the NHS. However, they made clear on the youth forum (can only vouch for through the start of 2021) that the 12-19 year olds there were more than welcome to discuss private providers and the reality was that GenderGP was a frequent topic with children happily recommending it to each other/discussing the process in great detail.

"Liz Truss supports calls for police investigation into Mermaids trans charity"
Telegraph article from today

I don't think Truss actually committed to it, she was responding to Miriam Cates in the HoC however this is another article that can be used for communications with school.

I've just gone to the Place2Be website because I know they provide a counsellor at DC's school. No link (now) that I could see, and a specific search for Mermaids brought up 0 responses.

Is anyone still able to find an active signpost from the site?

TheClogLady · 13/10/2022 12:34

Fascinating @BeBraveLittlePenguin ’

However, if you use the direct url it’s still there:

www.place2be.org.uk/our-services/parents-and-carers/supporting-your-child-s-mental-health/

(you might need to copy and paste)

I searched for Gender, LGBT and like you, go no results…
So I tried ‘schools’ ‘eating disorders’ and ‘Scotland’ too.

They seems to have disabled the search function (or perhaps it’s just broken since yesterday? 😇🙊)

Ah right. OK, sigh, off to send an email.

TheClogLady · 13/10/2022 19:09

Oh Lordy. They are in 75 schools within a 20 mile radius of me (NW) and a 115 schools within 50 miles

Mostly primary schools.

So I put in a random postcode 200 miles from me (SE) and that came back with 190 schools within 50 miles!

so not every school, but a significant number.

might need to find a more systematic approach for this one…

TheClogLady · 13/10/2022 19:10

Here’s the tool I used on their website, if any other MNetter wants to see how many schools have Mermaids referring school counsellor services in their own area.

I've had a positive response from an email to my local councillors stressing the safeguarding concerns and the Charity Commission investigation. I pointed out that the NHS and the DfE had removed links to Mermaid and I hoped they would use their influence to see if the link on the council website could be removed. A councillor got back within hours, said she would pass this on and sounded as if she felt my concerns were valid. Fingers crossed.

That’s excellent news.

ValancyRedfern · 14/10/2022 19:28
