Why have Mumsnet deleted the "Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions" from the easy "Talk" sidebar?

Just that, really.

Why have Mumsnet deleted the "Feminism: Sex and Gender discussions" from the easy "Talk" sidebar?

Presumably to discourage women from organising for their rights and to discourage welcoming any newcomers. We have been making too much progress recently and it must have upset too many men and their handmaidens to see the avalanche of women whose eyes have opened to all this. Time to put us back in our box.

CrossPurposes · 08/10/2022 00:30

And it's a bloody annoying thing to do.

BitossiBlues · 08/10/2022 00:31

This week of all weeks. It's bloody irritating.

notasglittery · 08/10/2022 00:33

sigh it's not always an attack you know.

MN wants to silence women? I doubt that very much.

BrrrGettingColder · 08/10/2022 00:36

Yes, I'm wondering along those lines too.

Until recently, I could click on the "Talk" menu on the left side of the screen, and it included "Feminism and Women's Rights", along with "Baby Names" and "Telly Addicts"etc. and all the others.

But suddenly, "Feminism and Women's Rights isn't there any more.

I noticed a thread on Site Stuff a week or so ago which I think asks this

www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4643582-why-has-the-quick-link-to-feminist-issues-been-removed

... displaced in the popularity stakes by Xmas?

BrrrGettingColder · 08/10/2022 00:47

It's been a good week for women's rights.

The whole Mermaids scandal with their paedo-adjacent trustee who had to resign.

Let that sink in for a moment. A paedophilia agologist - a man in favour of adults having sex with children - actually getting appointed to be a trustee for very vulnerable and confused children and teenagers.

And Nottingham Council bang to rights - they were wrong - by Julie Bindel. Despite their mealy-mouthed apology, they were wrong.

Just wondering if Mumsmet got forced to drop FWR from the quick list because of the usual external Eyes and reporters.

FWR has been there for years, as I have. But suddenly, recently, it's not there any more.

OP posts:
Rapunzel22 · 08/10/2022 01:00

Yes I always followed that link too.

Apollo442 · 08/10/2022 01:03

I'd like an answer too.

Pixiedust1234 · 08/10/2022 01:03

@BrrrGettingColder if its always been there then perhaps you would kindly hop on that link and say so. I've not been here long enough to quibble over their answer but I'm 90% sure it was there with the Christmas quick link last year. I really miss not having it.

BrrrGettingColder · 08/10/2022 01:07

About two weeks ago when I clicked on the Top Talk, the "Feminism: Sex & gender" board used to be there at the bottom of the drop-down list.

But no longer.

And I don't think it's because people don't take part, and its unused. Feminism: Sex & gender discussions are extremely lively, day and night.

Here are the current Top Talk topics in the drop-down list:

Am I being unreasonable?
Style & Beauty
Baby names
Conception
Parenting
Chat
Relationships
Telly addicts
Property
Christmas
Secondary education

Is the topic of "Baby names", for example, really more important, to the general female population, than "Feminism: Sex & gender"?

"if its always been there then perhaps you would kindly hop on that link and say so."

Well, that's the problem - the link is just not there, any more. The 'Feminism: Sex & gender' board has been dropped from the quick links Talk menu.

No, but 'baby names' (real or spoof) is a popular board.

I'd have said FWR is too though. I rarely use the browser version, I use the app which doesn't have a list like that. FWR is pretty easy to find because there's so often a thread or two in Active. I can't say I've often noticed Telly Addicts showing up there.

Toseland · 08/10/2022 01:15

Thanks for posting this, i used to access the site from that dropdown menu often and really miss this link!

BrrrGettingColder · 08/10/2022 01:23

Women use Mumsmet in different ways. Desktop, laptop, device or app. All should give us the same options.

But on laptop, when I click on the left-hand side "Talk" menu, it used to include "Feminism: Sex & gender", clickable, right at the bottom. It is not there now. It is no longer there are an option for people to view easily.

Here are my current options:

Am I being unreasonable?
Style & Beauty
Baby names
Conception
Parenting
Chat
Relationships
Telly addicts
Property
Christmas
Secondary education

Why is "Feminism: Sex & gender" no longer included in that list of easily clickable links? Since about two weeks ago? It used to be on that list. Now - no, not there. Despite "Feminism: Sex & gender" being a very important and well-used board.

OP posts:
Pixiedust1234 · 08/10/2022 01:39

Sorry, I should have clarified the link. The one @ErrolTheDragon posted for the site feedback. Maybe if enough posters complain they might "tweak" it back fingers crossed

BrrrGettingColder · 08/10/2022 02:13

Thanks to all of you who agree!

(Though I would say that, wouldn't I !!)

To those who fail to see the point: the Feminism: Sex & gender topic got dropped from that quick and easy click menu. You now have to go searching for Feminism: Sex & gender, and to already know it's there, somewhere, in order to go and look for it and find it.

Just exactly at the time, e,g, Stonewall losing all credibility and Mermaids pressure group, such a big influence in our children's schools, has been revealed to have a paedo sympathiser as a trustee, and Mermaids' support for child genital and breast mutilation, documented previously and recently.

Now is not the time for Mumsmet to lose its well-known backbone and seek to ignore its feminist women and hide us, just because we're correct.

WildIris · 08/10/2022 02:18

Yes, I noticed that as well. Very annoying. I wondered if it was to discourage late night drive-by ploppers.

AutumnLeavesAreBugger · 08/10/2022 02:45

It is still hiding the Feminism board, and that's not acceptable, on a women's site. A women's site.

CurlyCabbage · 08/10/2022 03:11

I was thinking exactly this! Shocking and disgraceful for a women’s site. came for the advice when i had a baby but have stayed for the feminism!

PriOn1 · 08/10/2022 04:49

Also frustrated by its disappearance.

Me too!!

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 08/10/2022 05:06

It's still there for me, I've just checked so not sure why it isn't for others? 😕

DifficultBloodyWoman · 08/10/2022 05:10

It is worth remembering that MNHQ is not one homogenous group (as evidenced by some moderation decisions).

Like a lot of offices, they will almost certainly have a few bright, young things spouting wokery at volume with other gender critical staff quietly trying to not get fired.

Remember the intern and trans rights activist, Emma Healey, who published private user information online a few years ago? Well, she did say at the time that she still had friends at MNHQ who felt the same way she did.

We have no reason to believe that has changed.
