“hoisted by their own petard” never seemed more apt, if true

I had this as a suggested ad on fb today. I am definitely not their target audience

I think there’s a real possibility that Mermaids will be told to stop certain practices in the Youth and possibly Parent forums (hopefully including all the in depth discussions and recommendations for GenderGP by adolescents and self medding chat). However, realistically, there will be no way to monitor if that actually happens unless someone independent is appointed to review the discussions every once in a while. It’s easy to change what Mermaids say publicly, including on their live chat (here, if you ask them, Mermaids will say they can only recommend/signpost to the NHS), but the real problem is what goes on in the private forums.

The commission has a duty to investigate concerns raised, yes. I'm presuming most complaints came from JK Rowling's followers after one of her recent tweets?

As with everything else, innocent until proven guilty.

I dont know , but my many complaints go back years at this point.
Maybe its culmination of them all.

Mermaids has published a statement: https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/news/an-update-on-the-week/

In it they said that they're relieved that the Met said providing and wearing binders is not a crime. As a reminder, the Met said:

“The supply of a breast binder on its own is not a criminal offence.
“However, if an individual case of someone using a breast binder or undergoing the practice of breast ironing is reported to police, it would be investigated jointly with social services as potential child abuse. The same approach would be taken regardless of culture or community.”

So all they need is just one parent to report them to the police. I can't be the only parent of teens who would be straight to the police if I found a 'charity' had sent my 13 year old a binder without my knowledge.

They also say that an investigation by the CC is routine. Perhaps it is if you're Mermaids but it's certainly not usual.

Those screen grabs of them repeatedly recommending a struck off GP are shocking. I wonder if there's any financial link between GenderGP and Mermaids?

rogdmum · 30/09/2022 19:10

They were certainly very close at one point. Back in 2018, Mermaids would regularly post GenderGP’s newsletter on their Youth Forum.

Bloody hell.
Even the Guardian is reporting

Handsoffmyrights · 30/09/2022 19:36

I'm going to add two more examples here of Mermaids/Gender GP signposting (plus the one upthread with SG blatantly referring to HW).

Going through my screengrabs, strikes me how much propaganda SG and co use. The same phrases of 'misinformation' and 'anti trans' litter statements and posts. Lazy and not very bright.

What does it matter that it's 'not a crime'? Are charities only to be judged on whether their activities are legal? Their statements are always rather puzzling to me. Talk about clutching at straws.

SeagullSausage · 30/09/2022 20:41

Why does Mermaids vet my connection?

MrsJamin · 30/09/2022 20:41

This story (taken from twitter) is horrifying - just how quickly the mum of a 10 yr old girl identifying as a boy goes from enquiring to mermaids forums to getting puberty blockers from gendergp 😖 - they definitely have a very suspicious connection.

Horrifying - hope that the Charity Commission takes a PROPER look at this stuff. Plenty of the receipts are out there.

Binglebong · 30/09/2022 21:16

Out of interest, did anyone complain about the BBC article? I couldn't see any changes but noticed it has now vanished from the front page.

Ah, that'll be one of those:

"further articles in The Times this weekend containing spurious accusations about our online forums."

Igneococcus · 30/09/2022 21:36

"Articles" in plural, so there will be more. I shall look out for them and share :)

Thanks, Igneococcus.

Mermaids might not insert the scalpel but it sets girls on course to the clinic.

Indeed!

Handsoffmyrights · 30/09/2022 21:51

Thanks for the link. Janice once again, a voice of sanity.

More sunlight. No wonder Mermaids were panicking in their overly long, defensive statement.

Chillisquid · 30/09/2022 22:01

That article is heartbreaking.
Our poor girls.
Nice name check for Wagamama. Supporting this mess. Shame.

MrsJamin · 30/09/2022 23:10

I still don't understand how people can support mastectomies in young girls, its utterly baffling. Thank you Janice, I hope people read this who need to get some sense.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/09/2022 23:16

Yet another great article from Janice Turner. Such a good journalist.

wellhelloitsme · 30/09/2022 23:18

Someone on Twitter posted the risks of binding as follows:

Difficulty breathing
Compressed or broken ribs
Punctured or collapsed lungs
Compression of the spine
Damaged breast tissue
Damaged blood vessels
Blood clots
Inflamed ribs
And even heart attacks

And someone has replied saying "these are the risks of wearing ANY kind of bra like clothing".

🤯

I can only imagine this person has never had cause to wear a bra to come out with such utter bullshit.

Do they actually believe what they say? Does this person genuinely believe that wearing a bra can cause those things?!

TheBiologyStupid · 30/09/2022 23:50

More sunlight. No wonder Mermaids were panicking in their overly long, defensive statement.

Absolutely - but they do themselves no favours by misrepresenting what the Met said about binders. FFS!
