And the police won't police them so they feel invincible.

A podcast I was listening to once explained the notion of 'eustress'.

It's the opposite of distress.

It's where you get away with something, or a certain behaviour, for so long you begin to think you are invincible and your behaviour excelorates.

When you are caught out for your poor behaviour - or arrested and charged - you are utterly indignant because you have absolutely certainty by this point that your poor behaviour is justified.

This sounds familiar. Pushing a 70 year old man, not just any man but a stonewall founder who was at the riots and deserves to be revered, to the floor sounds like what happened to Vito gesualdi and his friend at the Netflix protest.

Shouting at a baby? And thinking you are utterly justified?

This absolutely shocked me when I first saw the early reports on Twitter and the details which have emerged have been even worse - coffee thrown at him, hit on the head from behind and apparently up to 6 people pushing and shoving a 70+ year old man who uses a cane.

Hoping that he's ok.

I don't know quite how anyone can get to the point they think it's okay to attack an older man, or shout at a baby.

Self justification fallacy, self righteousness, dehumanisation, I suppose. We've seen it happen many times before - I just find it so hard to believe these people think they are genuinely on the 'right side' of history.

The problem is the police. There have always been people, in every time and place, who want to hit and abuse those weaker than them, whether it’s women, old people, or children. The police are supposed to arrest the attacker. That’s all that keeps it in check.

Transwomen (notice how it’s never transmen) don’t get arrested. They can shout at whom they like, hit whom they like, and the police just Macarena behind them in rainbow lanyards pretending not to see.

So now anyone who wants to have a consequence-free fight can stick on a skirt and make up and it’s like the Monopoly ‘get out of jail free’ card.

I agree. I've seen an increasing level of posts on other platforms which really come across as (word we're not allowed to use) end of days type behaviour. 'By any means necessary' and 'terfs shouldn't be allowed to exist' are repeated with worrying regularity.

So sorry for what happened to Fred and hope he recovers soon. It is disgraceful. Repeating myself here as mentioned this on the other thread but worth pointing out some of Fox Fisher's take on Brighton, justifying this kind of dreadful behaviour. They really do think they are doing nothing wrong:
