Men in women's changing rooms

Moggyd · 18/09/2022 12:41

Just been into Marks and Spencer's changing rooms and there was a man sat outside the cubicle waiting for his partner. Right next to the big mirror where you come out and look. I didn't feel comfortable at all and wouldn't come out of the cubicle to show my friend the dress. I spoke to the member of staff and she said it was a recent change and men can go into the what was ladies changing rooms now because a few men have kicked off recently when refused entry. I feel pretty angry about this. Interestingly there was a sticker inside my friend's changing room as attached. Not put there by Marks. What do others think?

You don't see anything wrong in women and girls being made to feel uncomfortable and unsafe around (potentially predatory) men when they are getting changed and trying on bras?

Isn’t that the fetish?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/09/2022 13:57

Btw - my wife does not have a problem

That's nice, dear.

FlowersBloomInAutumn · 24/09/2022 01:45

Any men who place themselves in women's changing rooms are perverts, end of. Adult men do know. They have no excuse. The perverts don't care and/or actually take pleasure in making women uncomfortable in what should be women's single-sex spaces.

CatSeany · 24/09/2022 02:23

I felt a little uncomfortable in M&S recently for that reason. The changing rooms had about 10 seats within them and all of them were occupied by men aged 40+ waiting for whoever they were with. I was fine using the closed cubicle, but sometimes it's nice to come out and see what something looks like from a longer perspective and I really didn't fancy doing so in front of such an audience.

Mrsherdwick · 24/09/2022 03:20

I just don’t buy from M&S anymore. Haven’t fit a few years now. They don’t respect females so why should I increase their profits?

Moggyd · 24/09/2022 05:08

These are the messages I have had from M&S. enjoy!

"in all of our
stores, we have fitting
rooms located within our
womenswear and
menswear departments
and each is made up of
individual lockable
cubicles to ensure every
customer feels
comfortable and has the
privacy they need. While
they are mainly used by
customers of that
gender, as an inclusive
retailer and in line with
most other retailers, we
allow customers the
choice of fitting room.
Thanks"

And then.

"I completely understand your perspective on this
and I appreciate
you sharing your
thoughts on this with us.
I want to reassure you
that we have plenty of
staff members on the
shop floor so that all of
our customers feel safe
when using our lockable
changing rooms. I'm
unable to comment on
the specific case you're
referencing, but please
be assured that all of
your comments on this
have been shared for
review. We're unable to
offer further guidance or
feedback on this matter.
but again I'd like to thank
you for making us aware
of your thoughts on this
matter. Take care

That's ok then - thanks Jake.

Would Jake like to personally go and wipe off the emissions of males in the female changing rooms' mirrors etc?

clpsmum · 24/09/2022 13:24

Seems odd you didn't want to stand in front of a man who would pay you no attention when you were fully dressed tbh. Ridiculous some of the replies on here get over yourselves

I think fewer and fewer women will go to physical shops as a result. Ordering online is already killing retail . This will be the death knell. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

LovinglifeAF · 24/09/2022 14:47

It annoys me that the TRAs always twist it and make out it is all about safety. Obv that’s a big issue but what about privacy and dignity as well? I don’t want to share spaces with males even if they aren’t going to be violent

BirdinaHedge · 24/09/2022 15:15

Maybe we should ask "Jake" how many women to have been flashed at is acceptable before M&S accept there's an issue?

FirstandLastBorn · 24/09/2022 17:16

There's a video of a young woman absolutely distraught as whilst trying on clothes 2 men came in at separate times in a unisex changing room in Primark in Cambridge and she advises women to not go in there alone.

I hope she has support to get her through this.

What struck me about this is how she still talks about inclusivity and how great Primark were, but it's Primark that caused the problem in the first place.

BirdinaHedge · 24/09/2022 17:16

And now this on Twitter/TikTok

https://twitter.com/SusanMee9/status/1573682979464937473

Can we all boycott Primark? This poor lass - in tears after twice being harassed. by men in a Primark unisex changing room. Her cubicle curtain was drawn - absolutely a sign that someone is in there.

She tells us that the security guards knew this was going on.

So, Primark, how many more women are to be harassed before it is too many women?

So you are saying M&S is making customers feel "uncomfortable."

Let me put it to you, friend. If that was the case why do people still go there and why did they not leave and complain and why has this business and yes friend it is a business, why do you think they did this??

Trust me if I'm not happy with something and the business does not address my concerns I take my business to another.

Are you happy with it?
Are you going back?
If not, trust me we will and we do spend a lot of money there as our local M&S staff are great and we don't want it to close down

My wife has never felt uncomfortable.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 24/09/2022 17:28

@JamesBondOO7 genuine question for you.

Lots of women on this thread have said that they feel uncomfortable having men hanging around in the changing rooms. Why, knowing that would you do it, even if your wife thinks it's ok, you know that other women who don't know you are likely to feel uncomfortable with your presence so why wouldn't you just have consideration for those other women and stay out?

"Hanging around"?
For what?
If my wife wants me there and the rules allow it, am I breaking the law, ruels - of course not!

Read my previous posts from today

"lotsof women here said feel uncomfortable." What do you want me to do? For sure I'm not going to back down because a handful of women have said that as none of the women in my family have said that and we are from a culture where many still keep women in the background.

I won't be bullied into saying something I do not agree with.

As I said several times take your business elsewhere there are plenty of outlets begging for your business.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 24/09/2022 17:35

So basically if your wife wants something the feelings of other women are irrelevant? Think about that.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 24/09/2022 17:36

Have you checked pornhub to see if she features yet, JamesBond?

"Basically" it looks as though M&S caters for the millions of women like mine hence their stance. Or have M&S changed their stance and Primark??
Thanks

JamesBondOO7 · 24/09/2022 17:42

"mine" my wife and other ladies in my family

StandUpStraight · 24/09/2022 17:43

“Women like mine.”

interesting slip.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 24/09/2022 17:45

There are millions of women in your family? You don’t know any Jewish or Muslim women? Or ones with more than half a brain cell to see where this sort of horseshit (and highly illegal) policy ends?

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 24/09/2022 17:47

“M” wouldn’t have stood for it.
