As an aside, I have been attacked by a swarm of stinging insects before and it is very scarey.
But......
First of all, although JJ is a wally, this latest fiasco shows this is not about the rights of a small group of people who just want to live in peace. A lot of people who react this way on twitter etc are nasty and have a cruel streak. They have destructive personality types and they have found a way to be able to facilitate their behaviour with impunity like no other time before.
No one reacts this way in good faith - I am a teacher and get called 'sir' at least once a week - on one memorable occasion, 'dad' - I am a totally typical little rounded lady, by the way, its absent mindedness. A mistake. Their usual teacher is a man and they answer the register on automatic. I don't throw a tantrum or hand out detentions.
Last April fools day all the kids thought it was hilarious to answer 'yes sir' to the register and you know what? I thought it was hilarious too.
I do hate being called cis though. I have asked not to be and get replies ranging from calling me Nazi or biggotted or stupid or acting out like a child - I don't report anyone for it.
And I didn't throw a tantrum or call the police when I got served pork balls in a restaurant when I was a vegetarian and asked for tofu. I didn't report anyone for saying they don't believe in God when I talk about my faith. Sometimes students gasp in surprise when I tell them I am married to a man because I think many of them think I am a lesbian - it's not hate speech. It's not ignorance. It's not bigotry.
I have been suspended from twitter, by the way, for doing EXACTLY THE SAME THING as JJ. In engaging with someone who called themselves protransfemnst, I assumed they were female. They were quote tweeting me and hiding my replies and sending dozens of their followers to call me Nazi, bigot etc - I replied in good humour. One of them accused me of deleting tweets a d all I said was ' I am not, protransfemnst is hiding her replies'.
And I got banned. This person wasn't even trans, he was a man.... As it said in his bio.
JJ, if you read this, understand you are not advocating for trans people who just want the right to live their lives. You are advocating for the rights of bullies, misogynists and narcasists to abuse and confuse as they wish.
