The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism today released a report profiling hateful and extremist groups in Ireland.

The report, Irish Far-right Hate and Extremist Groups, details 12 far-right groups in Ireland that GPAHE identifies as embracing beliefs and activities that demean, harass, and inspire violence against people based on their identity traits including race, religion, ethnicity, language, national or social origin, caste, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Excellent, I thought I was going to be too late to plant this month.

This may not be the correct thread but with regards to the Women's Collective Ireland (formerly the National Women's Council) How exactly does their remit and funding work? They seem to have funding from the state to run services and courses for women. While also taking active political stances on issues of national concern.

Outside of even the current trans/sex/gender issues, they currently advocate for the Together for Safety campaign to ban protests outside medical facilities providing abortion services. To be clear, I'm very, very strongly pro-choice and in very in favour of bans on this kind of protest at medical facilities. I actively campaigned to repeal the eight, since I was a teen in the 90s. I canvassed in all the referendums that have been held, protested in between them. However I'm not entirely sure I feel comfortable with an organisation that receives state funding for providing services taking this kind of stance. Because as much as I disagree with women who lean pro-life/anti-abortion I don't want them to feel prevented from accessing services that may improve their lives. I support a National Women's Council/Collective taking a stance on these issues, but not also if they are a chosen provider of state services that should be available to women all across the political spectrum.

"Another outfit apparently posing a threat to democracy is LGB Alliance Ireland. This group, the report states, is the Irish chapter of the UK’s LGBA, which describes its objective as “asserting the right of lesbians, bisexuals, and gay men to define themselves as same-sex attracted”.

Some among this relatively small group would have been involved in campaigning to repeal the Eighth, but that doesn’t save them from the dreaded categorisation. LGB Alliance Ireland take issue with theories around gender dysphoria, and as a result they are labelled in this report as transphobic and by extension a far-right group.

One wonders what fascist organisations around the world would think of making common cause with same-sex activists. Perhaps they would consider it an Irish joke."

3timeslucky · 25/08/2022 16:48

And:

"One might well ask who benefits by attempting to amplify the issue, particularly through smearing organisations which simply hold different views to self-styled fascist hunters."

Indeed.

That's a good article, thanks.

Yep it may be a little subtle for the American's, as I see Wendy V. retweeted a UK based organisation (P News & a named uk twitter ac) and ignored the two big Irish one's.
I think that could be described locally as the West Brit approach😉

'Dentons, the largest legal firm in the world, produced a document designed as a toolkit for gender activists in which it is recommended to ‘avoid excessive press coverage and exposure’. Ireland is mentioned as an example where this practice has been used.'

Abhannmor · 26/08/2022 08:41

5 years ago I'd have been right behind ppl like Uplift. Presumably they actually focused on far right originally. Before they identified a new revenue stream.

Now I ' cast a cold eye' on any such organisation with opaque funding , an unaccountable leadership and yes , a lot of non nationals directing their strategy.

A couple of Yankee wackadoodles get to decide that LGB Alliance is a hate group. Well I have unilaterally decided that TENI is a hate group. Perhaps this ageing socialist republican is really a West Brit Imperialist in disguise. Nah...

Ooh, I hadn't heard of 'West Brit' before. Here in Scotland we have a tradition of 'North Brits'.

A very old descriptor and not necessarily a negative one. The book West Briton by Brian Inglis is a good read. He presented All Our Yesterdays on TV for many years.

Very Magnus Magnusson sort of voice. You'd never know he was from Malahide , County Dublin. But then you'd never know Magnus was from Iceland. Well , you would , obviously being Scottish!

3timeslucky · 26/08/2022 20:25

Interesting to see Hugh Linehan's tweet on the Mick Clifford piece. "Well said. And about time someone pushed back on that report."

He also did an interview with Helen Lewis about her podcast on politics as the new religion. There is crossover between the material she covers and Colette Colfer's piece on Gendrification.

Watching with interest.

Abhannmor · 27/08/2022 12:44

Gendrification...another great new word

miri1985 · 27/08/2022 22:41

Wasn't sure this warranted its own thread but there was a protest outside of the Irish Independent's office because they've written articles recently about misgivings by Dr's about the treatment of young Irish people at the Tavistock and also about the Rugby/GAA issues

SolasAnla · 28/08/2022 09:26

So they want the HSE to fund cosmetic surgery and drug regimes for teens and adults but not to fund medical surgery or the same drugs to deal with development defects. Sounds logical!

Can't understand why the other groups decided(?) that protesting a newspaper for printing articles was not a good idea (or maybe they just don't like this group🤷🏼‍♀️)

They [Vik] said they wish editors and writers at the Irish Independent were held to the same standards as those that write academic journal articles.

Speaking to the crowd, Simon Murphy from The Emerald Warriors, Ireland’s first LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby club, said the IRFU’s recent ban on transgender women in female contact competitions “goes against everything” they stand for as a club.

The club is a little bit of a sausage fest on social media. 1 female coach, first 2(?) female players in 2019 and what looks like a total of 5 females playing on a tag team.

He said the media coverage of the issue “just focused on the stuff that people would read”.

Which is why he went with the Indo when he wanted publicity for the team.

“The science is there but they are focusing on the wrong group, and none of that information was broadcast, none of that information was published.”

There are 2 groups in the "debate"
^ males who want to play contact rugby against females
^ females who want to play contact rugby or the "wrong group".

Are North Brits like West Brits?

We also have NIPPLES . Or New Irish Professional People Living in England. To distinguish them from proles like me who worked in pubs etc.
