Like the title says really, I'm seeing it all over twitter today and I haven't got a clue what it's about.

If you don't immediately recognise that spaghettii in a suitcase is a well worn, stereotypical racist attack on black people then you've been living a very privileged life.

Really?!

That idiotic meme seems a more likely reference than the Stepin Fetchit character.

Yeah - the Urban Dictionary explanation makes more sense to me. It does not make much sense but it makes more sense.

Oh, the TRAs are here trying to gaslight women over something that is AS PLAIN AS THE NOSE ON YOUR FACE.

An absolutely pathetic attempt.

Oh fgs. You are as bad as the people you are decrying. Anyone who doesn't agree with you is an evil TRA.

I had not heard of either Stepin Fetchit or the spaghetti meme. I have read both explanations and the spaghetti meme seems the more likely as (a) it's far more recent and (b) a 4chan meme seems far more likely to be something the person posting it would have come across.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 21/08/2022 13:42

I'm white so I've not experienced racism personally. But I can recognise that Alison Bailey, a black woman, would know all about it. To get to her position, in her generation, as a lesbian, must have taken nerves of steel. And still does, on a daily basis.

To deliberately misread her to make out she will be marching at the head of some gang of racist and homophobic gender critical activists is beyond thick 🙄

What she is doing is attempting to open up discourse and to engage with people she doesn't agree with. A woman like her can do a lot to make people change their ideas and maybe let go of their prejudices. You don't overcome prejudice by refusing to ever speak to people who disagree with you.

What would you do with racists and homophobes, @Hearach15? Ship them off to a gulag? What about other groups of people who disagree with you?

MargaritaPie · 21/08/2022 13:44

I'm not really following it tbh. AB has made accusations of racism but I'm not seeing any racism.

Unless there's something I'm missing and "spaghetti briefcase" is a reference to something?

What a surprise you are not really following and can't see any racism @MargaritaPie that's your stock in trade.

Yes, you really are missing something. It's been explained over and over. RTFT!

I think there must be something wrong with the way Margarita's mumsnet must load - poor Margarita is forever stumbling into the middle of a thread with just no way of reading any posts prior to pronouncing how unaware they are of the specific topic in hand. Have you tried switching your computer off and on again Margarita?

Good luck with @MargaritaPie reading the thread or coming back to it. @MargaritaPie's modus operandi is to plop an asinine comment, which they think is super clever and then bugger off, make of that what you will about the person.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 21/08/2022 15:28

@VestofAbsurdity I've seen it described by someone on a different thread as a 'drive-by woke-scolding' 😁

Is that the argument that if a person says something is racist it must be racist? Is that the same argument that if a trans person says something is transphobic it must be transphobic?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 21/08/2022 15:54

Yes. The Drive-by Woke Scold.

That's definitely Marg's thang

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 21/08/2022 15:57

Lass

Racism is a thing, based on a person's real body, real physical characteristics

Transphobia is whatever anyone who chooses to have an opinion says it is.

So one can be defined, recognised

The other is just a stick with which to beat people who defend sex based rights.

If a black lesbian woman tells me that spaghetti in a briefcase is racist and offensive to black people then I as a white woman should listen to her learn why this is.

Misstache · 20/08/2022 18:40

You can literally picture the racist sketch: the pompous black lawyer who tries to have authority and use big important words, but then trips and FOOD COMES OUT OF THE BRIEFCASE. Then there would be a whole bit about confusing dinner for books because “I gets so tired with all that reading I must have got confused”, because hahaha we all know black people can’t really get through law school and belong in the kitchen cooking (like Mammy) or eating and look how the stupid black clown exposed themselves pretending they could be in an office.

If you know what the stereotype is, it’s really easy to see how it translates. And it’s also very close to Mammy stereotyping as well.

Excellent explanation of minstrelsy. Thank you for that. I get it now. And of course, AB has spent time in America. This link should take you to a glorious picture of a young Allison waving a banner, possibly during lesbian visibility week, in 1991 in the US.

And in this case, I really don't understand why anyone might in good faith be bending over backwards to find some other explanation. The various other spaghetti-related memes or whatever don't appear to make the slightest bit of sense in the context of the Twitter thing - where from the other bits relating to jkr and KS it was clearly meant to be something demeaning.

"it’s an important part of feminism that it encompasses all women?"

As someone who has been involved in real activism I can tell you racists and homophobes are not welcome in normal movements for social change.

Last year Women's Place UK held a conference to discuss the welfare of incarcerated women. As any regular lurkers will guess, trans activists protested outside it.

What they won't guess is that some of these activists were associated with the Socialist Workers Party. And what they also won't guess is that a Black People in Business conference happened to be taking place nearby on the same day.

The trans activists assumed the black men and women walking past were feminists and subjected them to the most appalling racial abuse.

WPUK wrote to the SWP afterwards, to discuss this, and got a meaningless load of waffle back that did not even acknowledge the racial abuse. It certainly did not commit to addressing it with the SWP members who had been part of the group racially abusing black passers-by.

Trans activists are not a normal movement for social change.

JKR? It rings a bell. She does have a way with words on Twitter. (I know! Who'd have thought the world's most successful living author in English would be able to make such good use of those 280 characters?)

Oh.... yes. That reminds me. Jane Fae made some quite racist remarks about a woman protesting the areas of conflicts between the rights of females of all ages, and those of trans people.

An appalling act. Yet, I have not seen hearache once answer the 10 or more times I have asked the question if they are holding Jane Fae, Peter Tatchell and Nancy Kelley to the highest level of purity that they are insisting on keeping Allison Bailey held to in their vilification of women who disagree with hearache.

I also note that hearache misses out on one of the protected characteristics, that of 'sex'.

I would like to see hearache discuss the sexism that has been integrally intertwined in the movements that hearache seems to be deeply involved in. Does hearache call out those who are making those comments?

Would hearache even recognise sexism?
