How fucking predictable.

It is.

But the coverage has changed from “transphobic JKR” to “Rowling, who has voiced her support for female-only spaces, has been accused of transphobia, which she denies.”

Her address was made public by activists after she "spoke up for women's sex-based rights

That’s a step in the right direction at least.

WalrusSubmarine · 14/08/2022 01:14

JKR faces MORE death threats from a different set of ideological extremists.

I did see her described as a free speech advocate which is a step in the right direction

picklebrine · 14/08/2022 01:29

It goes without saying that death threats are bad, but this one was from a three month old twitter account with seven followers and it's on the front page of The Mail On Sunday

I'm worried the press are using this to stir up Islamophobia.

EsmaCannonball · 14/08/2022 01:38

I've seen the usual suspects on Twitter say things such as, 'Salman Rushdie has principles, J.K. Rowling is just a transphobe.' (i.e. the person I agree with has principles, the person I disagree with is a bigot.) They are saying this without irony. The Rushdie stabbing hasn't caused a moment of self-contemplation for the cancel culture mob.

There's also been a lot of, 'Why are people shoehorning in J.K.Rowling on this? No-one's killing gender-criticals over trans issues.' (Well, they had a go at killing Ralph Knibbs and Dave Chappelle, as well as violent attacks on people like Julie Bindel, so I don't think we can feel too confident about that one.)

In general, it feels like we're living through a really bad time for freedom of speech and artistic expression.

Oh, it was the not-so-bad type of death threat?

EdgeOfACoin · 14/08/2022 07:07

The people issuing death threats are definitely compassionate individuals on the right side of history.

picklemewalnuts · 14/08/2022 08:01

I think it's reasonable to publicise the bad behaviour of dangerous extremists, Pickle. If you are nothing like those dangerous extremists, then you would know it doesn't apply to you, surely? Islamophobia would be denouncements of all Muslims, rather than denouncements of extremists who have behaved violently, surely? We can't just hide the actions of dangerous people because they belong to a particular subset of a group, surely?

JulesJules · 14/08/2022 08:18

I've just seen this on twitter - Warner Brothers statement re JKR, strongly condemning threats made against her and 'any form of threat, violence or intimidation when opinions, beliefs and thoughts might differ'

Beamur · 14/08/2022 08:22

Given the appalling attack on Salman Rushdie, maybe anyone making these kinds of threats to JKR will be taken a lot more seriously by the authorities now.

WolverineBluey · 14/08/2022 08:38

It's still surprising the people who will use this as a stick to beat JKR. Of course there is a parallel. Saw some blue tick writer I'd never heard of last night saying any concern for JKR was 'centring white women' in something that happened to a 'brown man'.

Did you miss the bit where a man was stabbed?
In public?
Because he wrote a book?
That Islamic men instructed people to kill him for writing the book?
That the book was published in '88 before the attacker was even born?

Funny how Womanaphobia is a-ok and death threats from violent extremist is a-ok.

Maireas · 14/08/2022 08:45

She's a woman with a voice. She uses it, which is too dangerous for some men.

The Mail didn't put the pipe bomb death threat from a white male a month ago on the front page, IIRC it didn't even make the print edition.

picklemewalnuts · 14/08/2022 08:53

But Pickle, that wasn't about Salman Rushdie! This threat is news because of him and his history, not because of JKR.

Maireas · 14/08/2022 08:54

Yes, but that's the problem with the Daily Mail, then, isn't it? It is a different issue.
Just because of that you can't diminish violence, threats and attempts to stop free speech.

picklebrine · 14/08/2022 09:10

that's the problem with the Daily Mail

@Maireas gets it

Death threat from white man = not worthy of print article, threat from brown man = hold the front page.

Maireas · 14/08/2022 09:20

There is nothing that you can do about the Daily Mail, @picklebrine!
That's why most of us get our news from other outlets.

picklebrine · 14/08/2022 09:24

There is nothing that you can do about the Daily Mail

Unfortunately 😆

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 10:41

I really hope this will inspire more editorial courage. Bin the sensitivity readers. Stop deplatforming people. Call out violent threats rather than opting for the (much less risky) calling out of opinions that don’t match your own. Shun open letters.

Needmoresleep · 14/08/2022 11:04

All extremists who are likely to resort to violence, or threaten violence to intimidate people, are dangerous. Nothing to do with them being Muslims, Trans, right or left wing, or whatever. It is behaviour unacceptable in a civilised society.

The fact that JKR is first strongly criticised by the right wing press (the Mail) and then TRAs, and then individuals who identify as Muslims, is extraordinary and very worrying. The common link? The fact that she is a strong successful woman? The problem? Some men, however they identify, can't cope with this?

I hope she is OK. There is too much hate/violence aimed at public figures, admirable, likeable or not. David Amess, Jo Cox, but also Rebekah Vardy, all sorts of people.

"Hate" is seriously over used, but actual threats need to be clamped down on effectively and quickly whether by police, social media or whoever. It might be just an inadequate teenager sitting in his bedroom, but the fear created can be debilitating.

I hope JKR is OK. The Salman Rushdie attack must have been terrifying to any author who has previously faced threats.

(And if our visitors don't see this, or acknowledge this well...I don't know.)

The man who tried to kill Rushdie is the one stirring up Islamophobia
