I actually do feel a bit sorry for JH with the onslaught - but I wonder if she’ll realise this is how it feels.

I thought this tweet of hers was a little ingenuous:

’This is a good point. Given that the latest death threat to JK Rowling was directly in response to her support of Salman Rushdie, then why have the Press made this about trans people (again)? No need to answer. I know.’

Obviously because JKR was pilloried due to wrong think on the trans ideology, and JH is alleged to have not supported her because of this. It literally is the heart of this specific issue. To suggest otherwise is… well 🤷‍♀️

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/08/2022 10:11

I don’t feel remotely sorry for her. She’s been snarky, rude, supercilious, and utterly disingenuous about this whole issue.

This article where the Daily Mail equates TRAs with Islamic extremists and says there's "No place for pacisim in these culture wars" arguably oversteps the mark.

Its about Freedom of speach.
SR was attacked because he said things people disagreed with.
JKR said things people including JH disagreed with.

I see JH has moved from I don't have anything to do with policy to we collectively set policy.

As for the substantive issue :

As for ‘an attack is rare’: Japanese translator of ‘The Satanic verses’ was murdered. Italian translator seriously injured, Norwegian publisher survived an assassination attempt, Turkish translator survived a mob who arsoned the hotel he was staying at - survived but it killed 37

Jojolyon is off on one again. The right to speech is relative to one’s power, apparently (that seems to be a way of arguing that powerful people have to be told by less powerful people when they are allowed to speak, which I’m not sure makes sense?).

Then shouldn’t he be piping down ? I don’t think windmills turned into houses are typically cheap. He’s in the press fairly regularly going on about how he won (technically) against gov. authorities etc.

He managed to beat a fox to death and not get cancelled in a country where parents of twins who were bitten in their cots got absolutely dog piled for inducing foxphobia.

That sounds fairly powerful. So maybe he should lead by example and put a sock in it.

achillestoes · 16/08/2022 11:03

@AlienatedChildGrown

But he gets to keep his power by pretending he’s exercising it on others’ behalf.

Agreed, but their opposing views on the trans debate has highlighted it as an issue between them, and the other impacted authors.

The common theme is men trying to silence a woman - J K Rowling. Let her speak. Most of us in the UK including I hope many of the 2m UK muslims support the right of free speech of Rushdie.

achillestoes · 16/08/2022 11:07

She’s now blurring the lines again. Free speech (she says) doesn’t include ‘hate speech’. Does she define or attempt to define ‘hate speech’? She does not. By keeping that huge category of prohibited speech as vague as she can, she gets to put anything she doesn’t like into it.

Actually, there is no such crime as “hate speech” in the UK. You are allowed to say thing people don’t like and even things people feel are motivated by dislike. What you can’t do, is commit crimes.

Who's silencing JKR?

She only has to like a tweet and the Daily Mail prints a story about it.

"Trying to"

achillestoes · 16/08/2022 11:13

@SarahTG

Did you read the word “trying”?

ScreamingMeMe · 16/08/2022 11:14

More from Joanne Harris. Truly a nasty piece of work AND a liar.

Harris is still being awful.

Rachel Rooney showing she has more class in her little fingernail than Joanne Harris has in her whole body.

It’s actually fascinating to watch the great and the good come back to the table. They’re issuing statements in support of free speech. They're at pains to mention that they don’t hate JKR, they just disagree with her. They believe in freedom of creative expression and free speech.

WHERE. WERE. THEY?

Still waiting to see any of those actors who owe their very careers to JKR, and those more-established ones who received a considerable career (and earnings) boost from appearing in the HP films, to say anything. Anything at all.

Andante57 · 16/08/2022 11:21

Sorry, I’m being stupid, but I don’t understand this. Are there two Joanne Harrises with opposing views?

TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2022 11:23

Yes, Harris and Rowling

Tumbleweed. Whadda surprise.

Well, Salman Rushdie wrote novels and gave speeches but he still, you know, got stabbed. Just because an author weathers the attempt to silence them doesn't mean people don't want that author silenced (or perhaps, in JKR's case, allowed to speak once re-educated). The attitude to JKR continuing to speak, despite everything, is akin to 'See, the witch floats! Now we must burn her!'

EsmaCannonball · 16/08/2022 11:35

And Harris is still making out that gc authors want special pleading from the SoA. No, they just want you to uphold the wider issue of free speech.

achillestoes · 16/08/2022 11:47

I’ve seen the first TRAs coming for her now. By accepting that Rowling does not deserve death threats, and that she does actually hold a legal right to free speech, Harris has lost her ‘ally’ status. It’s usually very fast.

No. Two Joannes: Harris and Rowling

RoyalCorgi · 16/08/2022 12:37

I'm astounded at how brave both Rushdie and Rowling. Especially Rushdie, of course, because as a PP pointed out, other people associated with his book have been murdered. There are plenty of Islamist fanatics out there willing to kill people who think the wrong things.

But I don't think I would even have JKR's courage. She's had thousands of death threats, and we know these people can be violent. You only need one determined TRA lunatic to carry out the threat. And yet she persists. Amazing woman.

achillestoes · 16/08/2022 12:48

The ‘powerful people don’t deserve free speech’ crew know exactly what they’re doing. JKR was in a position to speak out because of her power. She can afford never to work again. Most people can’t.

nauticant · 16/08/2022 12:49

No. Two Joannes: Harris and Rowling

I think part of the confusion is that there's Joanne Harris who would like to silence the gender critical women Joanne Rowling and Jane Harris.
