"it's pretty obvious what the subtext is here."

sorry, what is the subtext. Can you explain because I am genuinely not getting it.

One major author gets stabbed. This is front page news. Another British author gets death threats for showing sympathy for him. Not front page news?

Free speech is the backbone of our democracy. Any paper would be failing if they did not report attempts to silence people's reasonable views by use of violence and threats.

Well said.

I'm hoping the death threat tweet to JKR was just a nasty troll. The thing about this kind of tweet is it could be from anyone - might not even be a Muslim, just someone spreading hate and mischief.

The Daily Mail didn't put JK Rowling on the cover today for the sake of women's rights. Sure, they'll sell more copies but it's pretty obvious what the subtext is here.

It's a vile rag.

As vile as its sister paper Metro?

She’s being her usual horrible self.

There is a call for her to be kicked off being Chair (!m?) of the society of authors (but only the ones we approve on). She is being pretty awful.

@picklebrine you would not approve of her, she is one to tweet names at (not to, because that would give a right of reply) a Brown Muslim Woman who wrote childrens books just because the woman wanted to live her faith.

Is there any reason to think it was a Muslim? I didn't see it but I would assume it was the usual hateful lot seeing an opportunity to threaten her with violence (not that they need one)

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/08/2022 18:01

I'm finding this all a bit weird as in jkr's death threats are nothing to do with Salmans fatwa and yet some quarters are implying they are?
We all know who is threatening her and why....

Needmoresleep · 14/08/2022 18:08

It matters not one jot whether the person issuing the threats is muslim, trans, has white or black skin or whatever.

The behaviour is unacceptable. Twitter and other SM, as well as law enforcement need to clamp down. For all our sakes.

I am pleased that Warner Bros have finally worked out that this should not be happening. Took long enough. Maybe the Harry Potter stars will come to their senses rather than leave JKR to hang out to dry. This is a huge free speech issue. It affects all of us. Men, women, Mail readers, Guardian readers etc. Jo Cox and David Amiss may not have had a lot in common but they were both murdered for trying to do what they felt was right for their communities.

I think we all know who are most likely to be sending JKR death and rape threats.

The latest threat- 'you're next'- was in the comments on her support of Salman Rushdie. I don't think there's any reason to think it's a new threat source as such. It's particularly egregious to threaten a writer while she's tweeting in support of a writer who's a victim of terrorism.

UWhatNow · 14/08/2022 18:11

I too am glad that Warner Bros have supported her. Them and the Daily Mail - I don’t care if their motivations are commercial - I don’t give a shit. Women are being silenced and persecuted and thank God it has significant illumination.

Exactly, if you google image search jk rowling twitter death threats there are 100s of examples, why should this one be any different?

TheKeatingFive · 14/08/2022 18:13

Good luck with that. JKR getting death threats hasn't remotely bothered them before.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 18:14

Jojolyon is off on one again. The right to speech is relative to one’s power, apparently (that seems to be a way of arguing that powerful people have to be told by less powerful people when they are allowed to speak, which I’m not sure makes sense?).

picklemewalnuts · 14/08/2022 18:30

So how come JoJolyon ever gets to open his mouth?

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 18:33

I don’t know. It’s either that he sees himself as being without power (which by his own standards as a “cis” white male doesn’t make sense), or he thinks the rules don’t apply to him, or he thinks his musings on the topic constitute some form of plenary indulgence, so he’s in a “privileged” group but he earns the right to speak through his “advocacy” of less privileged groups.

Which means that the world has turned upside down, so the powerful have become the less powerful and vice versa. So the balance of power ends up changing polarity like an electric motor. If you want a picture of the future imagine a yoyo spinning round and round — forever

picklemewalnuts · 14/08/2022 18:39

Joly yoyo yon.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 18:45

‘If you want a picture of the future imagine a yoyo spinning round and round — forever.’

All I have to do is listen to Jojolyon speak and I can imagine that.

RoyalCorgi · 14/08/2022 19:22

The username was Meer Asif Aziz. Newspaper reports say Aziz is based in Karachi, though whether that is based on his Twitter bio or other info (eg his IP address) I don't know.

IF that is his real name, and IF he's based in Karachi, it sounds more like an angry Islamist than a TRA. And perhaps that's why the police are treating it more seriously than the thousands of other death threats she's received - they assume an angry Muslim making death threats is more likely to act on them than the usual whey-faced trans activist typing away in his mum's basement.

But you can't really tell, can you? What I mean is: you can't tell if that's his real name, you can't tell if he's based in Karachi, you can't tell if the death threat is genuine or just nastiness, you can't tell if he's a TRA or an Islamist or one of the many sad tossers who stalk Twitter or even some paid scrote in a Russian troll farm stirring up trouble.

On the internet, no one knows you're a dog.

ivejustgotthis · 14/08/2022 19:37

Thanks RoyalCorgi, I didn't know the supposed user name and location, but I agree with the points you make.

Kissandmakeup · 14/08/2022 19:53

Here's his bio, it's very specific & there's something slightly off about it.

Also suspicious how it wasn't locked down when put on blast as it contains so much personal information.

It goes without saying that death threats are bad, but this one was from a three month old twitter account with seven followers and it's on the front page of The Mail On Sunday

I'm worried the press are using this to stir up Islamophobia.

As if trying to murder the guy, presumably because of your religious interpretation, might still present the religion in a good light.

ScreamingMeMe · 14/08/2022 20:55

What are people trying to say here? If the twitter profile doesn't seem quite legit, we should just ignore any death threats coming from it?

ScreamingMeMe · 14/08/2022 20:57

(That wasn't directed at RoyalCorgi.)

Geez, and Joanne Harris seems to think she is making it up unless I completely misunderstand the point of her "poll":
