JKR faces MORE death threats from a different set of ideological extremists.

I'm not convinced they are not the usual arseholes.

ScreamingMeMe · 14/08/2022 11:51

picklebrine · 14/08/2022 09:10

that's the problem with the Daily Mail

@Maireas gets it

Death threat from white man = not worthy of print article, threat from brown man = hold the front page.

I think the key issue here might be "straight after Salman Rushdie was stabbed" actually.

Same here

picklemewalnuts · 14/08/2022 12:07

Agree, @ScreamingMeMe .

Day after brown man stabs and almost kills a famous writer who'd been accused of islamophobia and was subject to a call for religious assassination, another famous writer gets a death threat for tweeting in support of severely injured man. That's newsworthy. Downplaying it is really not working @picklebrine . I'd say it's stirring it up, in fact.

Count me in as another.

What group are constantly known for making death threats against her?

Redshoeblueshoe · 14/08/2022 12:31

And the man who threatened JKR only got suspended from Twitter, whilst Aja - a black woman got banned for posting a picture of a TW playing women's football and stating it wasn't fair because said person was clearly male.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 12:32

What was going on with Joanne Harris and that Twitter poll? Shocking stuff.

EsmaCannonball · 14/08/2022 13:36

I'm not put off reading books by authors who are trans (love Jan Morris's books), I'm not put off reading books by authors who have different views from me, or even views that I find offensive, but I am put off reading anything by Joanne Harris because she's shown herself to be wilfully thick, and that I can't forgive.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 13:40

It’s just bizarre, the way she has reacted to actual threats of assassination. I don’t care what your political opinions are, it’s unacceptable to threaten to murder people. No need for anyone to be facetious about that. It’s not controversial.

ivejustgotthis · 14/08/2022 13:57

What did she say?? (Don't go near Twitter)

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 14:08

After the Rushdie attack, she posted this little mini poll asking writers whether they’ve received death threats, then later she deleted it. The tone of the options in the poll was very off (almost like she thought it was funny). It was less a response to the horror of what happened to SR, more a facetious response to a linked death threat issued to JKR.

SwissBall · 14/08/2022 14:14

I just wanted to share this glorious tweet from Suzanne Moore.

JKR receiving death threats for supporting Salman Rushdie
ivejustgotthis · 14/08/2022 14:22

Wow...
At least Suzanne Moore is great

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 14:22

Bouji quislings is about right.

TheKeatingFive · 14/08/2022 14:30

Suzanne Moore is a fucking legend.

Obviously JKR is too, but that's more widely established.

EsmaCannonball · 14/08/2022 14:34

Joanne Harris also tweeted something about the Joan of Arc hoo-hah akin to 'Gender criticals are having their minds blown by a woman wearing trousers.' Errr, no, we're having our minds blown by people who claim to be feminists saying that someone wasn't a woman because she wore trousers.

Like I said, wilfully thick.

She’s being her usual horrible self.

There is a call for her to be kicked off being Chair (!m?) of the society of authors (but only the ones we approve on). She is being pretty awful.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 14:39

How do they pick the Chair of the SOA and how do they remove them?

VestofAbsurdity · 14/08/2022 14:43

JulesJules · 14/08/2022 08:18

I've just seen this on twitter - Warner Brothers statement re JKR, strongly condemning threats made against her and 'any form of threat, violence or intimidation when opinions, beliefs and thoughts might differ'
twitter.com/Leyanelle/status/1558584349297197061?t=EsVB7ImjPuBRISspcgOJfA&s=19

That's a very good, strong statement from Warner Brothers particularly the bit you highlighted.

achillestoes · 14/08/2022 14:53

It moves me to tears when I think about how brave JKR has been in the face of a vicious hate campaign, with nearly everyone who should have been defending her embarrassing themselves with displays of cupidity, cowardice and credulity. Then when I think she did it to defend someone else, it’s even more incredible, isn’t it? And she’s winning.

She's being roundly called out on twitter for her vile behaviour and that disingenuous twitter poll. Nasty piece of work.

Maireas · 14/08/2022 09:20

There is nothing that you can do about the Daily Mail, @picklebrine!
That's why most of us get our news from other outlets.

This is true. The Daily Mail isn't doing what it does simply to support women, or to be Islamophobic, or for any disinterested reason. It does what it does to sell newspapers. It does this by scratching the itches of its readership. And sometimes by pouring itching powder on those itches. It will happily dissemble, prevaricate and mislead if needs be. It has a pragmatic approach to the truth.

The fact that it is currently supporting women's rights is a good thing, in the same way as its support for justice for Stephen Lawrence was a good thing. It's creating a lot of exposure. It has an enormous circulation. Let's use it.

I'm glad the DM is doing this, even though I still won't have the paper in my house.

foxbassalpha · 14/08/2022 15:18

The Daily Mail didn't put JK Rowling on the cover today for the sake of women's rights. Sure, they'll sell more copies but it's pretty obvious what the subtext is here.

It's a vile rag.

Needmoresleep · 14/08/2022 15:29

"it's pretty obvious what the subtext is here."

sorry, what is the subtext. Can you explain because I am genuinely not getting it.

One major author gets stabbed. This is front page news. Another British author gets death threats for showing sympathy for him. Not front page news?

Free speech is the backbone of our democracy. Any paper would be failing if they did not report attempts to silence people's reasonable views by use of violence and threats.

Tamworthian · 14/08/2022 16:31

The usual group is working hard on shutting down any sympathy for JKR, we wouldn’t want that now, would we. Kate Clanchy is probably relieved for having a five minute break though.
