80 year old woman banned from pool for standing up for little girls

This poor woman dedicated her life to defending women and girls. She heard a male voice while in the shower at her local pool, looked out and saw a TW changing near 4 or 5 little girls while staring at them. She stepped in, asked if the TW had a penis, and got banned and the pool staff threatened to call police on her. They lied and said she said all kinds of profane things. This is so disgusting. I feel so bad for her.

Why was HooverIsAlwaysBroken post deleted? She just outlined what happened at Wi Spa. Are we meant to pretend, like the Guardian, it was unfounded bigotry when the a multiple sex offender was arrested and charged? It never happens and if it does then delete the post?

There are always going to be isolated incidents like this that (if 100% true) are going to be unsettling to most people, including those in the trans community. I do think it is important to remember that they are isolated and not to allow ourselves to get whipped up by the political agenda against this community that is being peddled at the moment. There have always been TW and TM and such issues have always raised difficult situations but the discrimination and violence they suffer as a community is very real. I saw a TW in my local town shopping centre being extremely unsure of which bathrooms to go into as the disabled/baby change ones were locked and I really felt for her as she may have come up against anti trans sentiments in the ladies and yet the mens would likely feel so intimidating. In the end she didn’t use either bathroom. Please let’s remember that 99.9% of TW and TM just want to live their lives and not be the focus of endless attention and often hate which seems to becoming more and more prevalent on this forum and elsewhere x

Gosh just so many of these isolated incidents these days.

If only there was a way of assessing the risk that makes pose and managing it?

@Didimum how much effort, or rather, what does a man have to do to become a trans woman in your eyes?

None of my posts on this thread have anything to do with what a man has to do to become a trans woman. They are about the correct actions of the elderly woman suspecting and taking action against what she saw as wrongdoing. I'm not entering a discussion about the spectrum of gender identity.

Why is it always ok for the women and girls to feel discriminated, anxious, unfairly pushed aside for the trans women? Why do the trans women feelings always trump the women and girls?

The billion dollar question Confused

Even if this one particular TW is not a paedophile, the ideology that you are defending in general has the potential to allow men of ANY description into the spaces reserved for women and girls.
How do we tell the difference between the "bad" men and the "good" ones?
We can't.
Therefore, it is safest to simply keep ALL men out of these spaces.

There is no way for "policy makers" as you put it, to discern who has an "innocent" reason for being in a women's safe space.

Why is it appropriate for ANY male to be in there? Because he "feels" like a female? What does that mean?
Most importantly of all, why should his "right" to be there trump the safety of the girls and women using that space?

Allowing males into these spaces increases the risk that a paedophile WILL be able to enter unchallenged on the basis that this ideology makes it acceptable for them to be there, and those challenging males in women's spaces are deemed bigots and transphobes.

This! Very well said, Bored.

It makes it quite clear than transwomen are not women doesn't it?

Safeguarding amd protection Applies to loud/rude/arsehole women too funnily enough.

What misogynistic bullshit is this where you have to behave a certain way to actually be considered a victim of wrongdoing.

A male has no place in the women's changing room. Ever. Regardless of any feelings inside their heads that no one can even prove exist.

Lovelyricepudding · 05/08/2022 11:37

Any male who enters a female space has already ignored women's boundaries, consent and concerns to turn it into a mixed sex space.

That's because as you well know, there is no discussion - in your world a man says three words and bingo, he's in.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/08/2022 11:37

Agreed. This is one woman who perceived the TW to be ‘looking’ - was that true? Who knows. Not appropriate, ever, to ask about someone’s genitalia, unless in a medical capacity. She should have reported her concerns to the management of the pool.

///

You really think this is a bigger problem than a naked man amongst children in showers? Really?

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 05/08/2022 11:40

Why was I deleted?

maybe people were uncomfortable about reading about ehm… whether a certain penis was “ready for action” or not? Is it better if I use euphemisms? But little girls aged 9 should accept the reality, close up and look away?

because a very prominent activist tweeted that little girls shouldn’t stare at genitalia after the WiSpa incident - when this was discussed.

I would encourage people to read the article. It appears that we are supposed to oriented that this never happens. And if it does happen, we are not allowed to talk about it.

We will not tolerate bias, hatred, or discrimination that leads to the oppression of individuals or communities. We will ensure sustained and meaningful progress toward equity and human dignity for all

Isn’t that the very opposite of what they are doing or is it just another lie.

The pool staff seem to be making things up to justify their behaviour.
Can you trust anything they say as the lies seem to be tripping off the tongue so easily
I wonder what else they lie about

I'm reading that as a big old Fuck You to women and girls

Didimum · 05/08/2022 11:45

Staynow · 05/08/2022 10:09

Why would you assume the lady must be lying or wrong? I'm afraid it does make you sound like a paedophile excuser. Are you saying it's less appropriate to ask someone if they have a penis then for someone with a penis to be watching or even in the vicinity of girls changing?

I am saying it's less appropriate for her to ask someone if they have a penis than to report her concerns to the people who are in the position to a) remove the individual b) consider any incident in the pool's policies. I did not assume the lady to be wrong or lying, but nor did I assume what she perceived to be true. People are more likely to have biases against transgender individuals, just as they are more likely to have biases against many other minorities or categories of people they may have biases towards. I refer to my post earlier about a friend being stop-searched due to being Asian and, by the someone's perception of 'looking shifty', and then released without search when it became clear he was accompanied by someone who was white. Two biases at play there. If you have a concern about a terrorist on a train, don't stop them and ask if they have a bomb, report suspect behaviour to the appropriate place to handle the claim.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/08/2022 11:46

Am I the only one here who, in context of safeguarding would be totally ok with being asked what genitalia they have? I don't see why it's so offensive.

Maybe it's because of a lifetime with female biology I have heard so many more disgusting questions and comments aimed at said biology.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/08/2022 11:46

Granted it's a jarring thing to hear/say but not offensive

BigDayToday
What about a man? Not a TW like the one in this story but just a man who wants to be there? Is that ok? And if not, how can we tell the difference?

That’s for the establishment’s policy makers to decide.

If you were the policy maker what would you do?

Was the TW naked?

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/08/2022 11:49

When a male enters a space for women and girls they give up the right to be spoken to in a non offensive or truthful way. Victims of voyeurism and sexual harassment ( which is exactly what a male entering women's spaces is) do not owe the perpetrator " nice"

Seriously wtf

LondonJax · 05/08/2022 11:50

""Hawkins added that her solution to females who felt uncomfortable changing around males were to use bathroom stalls, which are located in the same gender-neutral area. She also suggested closing the shower curtain was an appropriate solution for privacy and safety.""

Why do women have to close themselves off with a shower curtain? Why can't TW be told to do that? Is it possibly because it's patronising?

I think, if I were women using that centre, I'd ask my DS/DH/DBIL/DF to come in with me - after all how can he be stopped? He only has to say he's TW and away he goes with a smile on his face.

As for women having to look away if a TW is changing and has a penis. No way will I look away. You want me to be uncomfortable in my space? I'll make sure you feel uncomfortable too. Cover up or go.

JenniferBarkley · 05/08/2022 06:38

Asking a stranger about their genitalia will get you banned from most respectable establishments.

If she was worried the woman was watching the children get changed, she should have challenged that, and told the staff.

This wasn’t a woman.

Floisme · 05/08/2022 11:54

The most important job of any society is to protect its children. Everyone knows this. Sometimes this is at the expense of the feelings and convenience of good, law abiding people. Decent people understand this.

Any society that forgets their most important job is, sooner or later, fucked.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/08/2022 11:56

Ahhh my bad nope, Clementine was indeed dressed at the time with their penis probably not at all obvious while standing watching these little girls changing. So it was just a man watching small children who were likely to be briefly naked.

When I write it down like that I do wonder why I was so cross. Totes normal non predatory behaviour Confused

Safeguarding trumps this Every. Single. Time

The NSPCC literally says to first report concerns to authority members. IG Schools explicitly says to not 'solve the situation yourself or confront anyone'.
