Seems that even the Equalities Minister was cowed and unable to express her real opinion!

I don’t think she was cowed, so much as respecting the principle of collective responsibility of government. It is likely (imo) that she has been scathing of gender ideology and has been a significant influence on the roll back from within government. Now she’s a back bencher she’s much more free to criticise publicly, though not necessarily as able effect change. I honestly don’t think we’d have come this far if we had a True Believer as Equalities Minister.

As for whether the new services become captured too - that is something we will need to keep an eye on. A likely tranche of legal cases from poorly treated children will hopefully help focus NHS minds regarding giving out experimental drugs to kids with MH problems.

I agree. The Health Minister had to lead on this, though I am sure Kemi was influential behind the scenes. From what I can see, Tory women including Kemi, Liz and Suella have been slowing and effectively mounting a push back against gender ideology and Stonewall influence. Getting Prof Cass in to do a report was a masterstroke and should enable a proper, clinically appropriate, way forward.

Clinical guidance for paediatricians will be crucial. A paediatrician recently asked me if I knew of an alternative to Mermaids, as some of her parents wanted support for a different approach. Mermaids were the only organisation listed by her Health Trust. In the end I think that though the Bayswater Support Group sounded like what she was looking for, she did not feel able to go beyond the guidance provided.

Late to this but it sounds like great news. I'm so pleased for all the brave women and men who've stuck their necks out over this, and relieved for parents of young children.

Of course it would be foolish to celebrate too soon or too long but then we're not fools.

Just heard a brilliant informed interview on BBC News with Dr David Bell, clearly calling out the inappropriate influence of certain trans lobbyists. When the interviewer ended it with the normal BBC pained "this is a terribly complicated issue" he interrupted her and pointed out that "it's not complicated at all - these children have been given the wrong treatment"

A wonderful ethical man.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 28/07/2022 15:57

@Needmoresleep - maybe genspect would be useful for your paediatrician friend?

so close...

What I found frightening was when Dd recently expressed interest in 'being trans' (recent school move, new set of 'friends' I was phoned to say she'd 'disclosed she was male & wanted the registrar & exam lists changed - we've checked her age against the guidelines & she is old enough to he autonomous so we are merely informing you as 'best practice'. I was astonished at rye school 'outing here when they didn't know if her home was supportive apart from all rye rest of it (as a semi verbal Autistic young person who only manages 50% school she's by no means a 'standard' teenager ...

Let's offer REAL support to young people who wish to discuss their feelings about their bodies / gender.
Real, supportive, responsible support.

@MrsOvertonsWindow Thanks. I had not heard of them. It was a few months back when the interim Cass report came out, so I was able to give her that to reassure her that current approaches were being critically reviewed.

My point remains. Good and appropriate guidance promulgated by health authorities to paediatricians, GPs and others, will be crucial. I hope Mermaids can be taken off the list. They are scary.

SidewaysOtter · 28/07/2022 16:09

I'd be interested to know what "ethical concerns" Trans Actual might have about research being done on cases where individuals are receiving treatment. Surely if someone is taking a life-altering step, you'd want to know that the treatment you're being given is safe, effective and - most importantly - that you've been given the correct information and/or warnings to enable an informed decision?

Might it be that such research won't show what they want it to show? Hmm

borntobequiet · 28/07/2022 16:10

Good news.

frenchhealthcareisgood · 28/07/2022 16:11

Name changed for this. I am glad the Tavistock has closed, but it is only one example of the appalling exploitation and abuse of children and the dreadful lack of mental health services. I hope the mental health services will be provided in a timely fashion for all these children/young adults.

One of my children lives and works in France. They recently had a mental breakdown and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital as an emergency, taken there by a friend. Admitted immediately for emergency care, transferred to a more appropriate setting, kept in for 6 weeks, excellent care throughout, psychiatrist, therapist, social worker, nursing care all provided. Further 3 weeks with short outings with friends, now discharged with outpatient follow up.
Child has a normal sort of job, pays health insurance according to income, as does everyone there.

We really need to reassess how we pay for and provide health care in the UK. I am profoundly grateful that my child was taken ill in France, not here. Even though I was worried and unable to visit, I am sure we would have been in desperate straits by now and still waiting for an appointment if it had happened here.

Oh lord. It's painful.

Fortunately none of the decisions that Hilary Cass is making and the public perception of the reasons why are affected by this man's self-delusion.

LynneBenfield · 28/07/2022 16:15

FANTASTIC NEWS. I just turned my laptop on and saw this as a BBC news headline. I hope this is the beginning of the end and that the children and families already affected by this scandal sue the arse off the NHS Trust for the harm done in the name of healthcare.

The level of misrepresentation in that account and the trans actual one is awful. They can't have read today's update or the interim Cass report, which are a bit technical but easily comprehensible by an intelligent layperson. Cass is damning about the ethics and lack of evidence for these treatments.

"No need to be concerned" sounds like a cult leader trying to stop their members questioning anything in the nasty other world.

AlternativelyWired · 28/07/2022 16:22

Why are the TRAs thinking this is good and that GC feminists shouldn't be viewing this as a victory? I don't understand Twitter at the best of times.

MajorieEks · 28/07/2022 16:25

I think their understanding is that gids was deemed not safe because of lengthy waiting times and not because of the unknown use of hormones etc. Therefore setting up more gender identity clinics will reach more trans children and provide them care sooner.

RandomlyThrownTogether · 28/07/2022 16:26

Much confused anger on Twitter that feminists are happy about this.

Listen, TRAs, this is indeed something 'gc' feminists and parents are pleased about. We are all hopeful that children get the best care possible, that they receive treatment based on evidence and best practise.

If you're happy too, that's great! We're all happy! I'm happy you're happy! Let's all support children going forward, to explore their feelings with as much support and compassion as possible.

All we want is research, and help provided for children who are struggling. That's it. You've been told we're evil and want to 'erase trans people' - that's not and never has been true. We just want the right diagnoses, solid research, and treatments that help children navigate their lives in the safest, most sensible ways possible.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 28/07/2022 16:28

"No need to be concerned" sounds like a cult leader trying to stop their members questioning anything in the nasty other world.

It would help matters enormously if people who make public statements or invite discussion (as per Twitter) were to demonstrate that they have any understanding of

  • cult

  • echo chamber

  • epistemic bubbles.

It might be useful for them to reflect upon how the strategy of #NoDebate and thought-terminating clichés has contributed to the lack of an evidence base for some parties and what seems to be a complete inability to understand what has been happening.

RandomlyThrownTogether · 28/07/2022 16:28

If you are reading this, the best sources of info are Cass' letter to the NHS.

Available here:

cass.independent-review.uk/publications/

And the GIDS statement:

gids.nhs.uk/news-and-events/regional-model-for-gender-care-announced-for-children-and-young-people/

RandomlyThrownTogether · 28/07/2022 16:29

Go to the sources! Ask questions! Take time to digest and think about what you are reading. Don't take it on faith from organisations that are heavily invested in manipulating what you think/feel/believe, especially those that make money from you.

A bombshell piece in The Telegraph tonight?
Sounds interesting!

Ravenclawdropout · 28/07/2022 16:48

Research should also be done on the influence of the introduction of Smart Phones in 2007, and the explosion of social media and its affect on children and adolescents. Then the obvious publicity of Gender Ideology and its uncritical support and active teaching in schools and universities. This all coincided with an enormous increase in children identifying as trans and/or experiencing Gender Dysphoria.
