Woman's Hour listener week

rabbitwoman · 26/07/2022 00:25

Over on twitter, woman's Hour have announced listener week and asked for ideas for topics we would like to see covered on the show.

Literally hundreds of answers all saying the same thing.....

twitter.com/BBCWomansHour/status/1551454702235226113?t=IX4QfNAv6P-0dPPPqQtT9Q&s=19

Top of the list seem to be Helen Joyce, maya Forstater, Allison Bailey, Kelly Jay keen, sharron Davis and of course jk Rowling.

Stephanie Davies arai, Watson, bev and Kate from the LGBA..... a positive roll call.

Unanimously, all the replies are calling for gender critical guests.

Now, I cannot imagine for one second that the person running the BBC woman's Hour twitter account would not have foreseen this. I wonder if this is a tactic, so they can go bavk to whoever has the BBC in this headlock and say, look!!! All these women want to hear about this, we cannot ignore it!!!

Another thread asking for Elaine Miller, a funny womens health physio who knows what a woman is. www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4597473-elaine-miller-viva-your-vulva-at-the-edinburgh-fringe?reply=118794442

That's an interesting thought OP, but maybe a bit optimistic? This is the BBC, the broadcaster that recently interviewed Fallon Fox about female sports, having somehow not checked beforehand that he was a violent misogynist. They seem to live in a google-free bubble - I think it's entirely possible that the unanimity of the responses will take them completely by surprise.

Either way, it will be very interesting to see how they respond!

Igmum · 26/07/2022 01:58

At what stage do you think they'll realise that women think politics and women's rights are both important and interesting?

I hope so! 🤞

PearlClench · 26/07/2022 08:32

I hope they listen to what women are saying. They can't claim to represent women if they don't .

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 26/07/2022 08:33

argh twitter's doing that thing where if I 'like' certain tweets the like count briefly goes up by one and then goes down by one

reminds me why I don't go near twitter

but yes, this feels like someone at WH trying to get an evidenced position to say 'women want to hear about this stuff'

rabbitwoman · 26/07/2022 08:46

'but yes, this feels like someone at WH trying to get an evidenced position to say 'women want to hear about this stuff' '

Indeed.

I am constantly being told that no one agrees with me; that no one else cares, there are more important things to worry about ; but one very quick and simple question on twitter shows a very clear snapshot of what women really want discussed.

I am going through the replies. It really is, pretty much, unanimous. Also, so polite, respectful and informed, even if some replies are through gritted teeth.....

I haven't checked it out yet, but I'd love to hear Nancy Kelley and Grace Lavery discuss these issues with Helen Joyce and Maya Forstater. Do you think Nancy and Grace would be up for it?

WearyLady · 26/07/2022 09:51

Blimey! I've just taken a look. There's no doubt whatsoever about what women want to hear about.

Come on BBC, sit up and listen!

IamSarah · 26/07/2022 10:28

I've been watching that thread with interest. It's pretty unanimous isn't it?

Woman's Hour was going to feature my court case and BBC interview but for some reason decided not to.

KittenKong · 26/07/2022 10:36

I’m saying it now - there will be men…

That’s mean. Like setting up a toddler to argue philosophy.

poorbuthappy · 26/07/2022 10:43

Yep. It will be about TW. because they just can't help themselves.

Olderbadger1 · 26/07/2022 11:03

Wonderful to see the unanimity in the responses - hope this will be impossible to ignore. Not a niche issue it seems!

The feminist charity FiLiA have also suggested that WH feature their Hague Mother's campaign. This aims to safeguard mothers who are fleeing across international borders to escape domestic abuse and coercive control. At the moment the majority are labeled as 'abductors', assumed to be a danger to their children, and obliged to return to their abusers' country and to a custody battle that they often lose. The injustice is terrifying. www.hague-mothers.org.uk/

If you are on Twitter, please could you support/amplify this request? Or, if you prefer to contact the programme direct, it's @BBCWomansHour
twitter.com/FiLiA_charity/status/1551795310674038784?t=HciCpm_dedxYTmmnlLc0BA&s=08

The project will also be featured at the FiLiA conference in Cardiff in October - the best 3 days of your entire life (yes really!). twitter.com/FiLiA_charity/status/1547917864782286850

Thanks all.

Amazing thread, I'm glad people have mentioned detransitioners, transwidows and various women who have lost jobs and careers to this (eg Rachel Rooney, Rosie Kay) as well as the big names. I know Posie Parker is marmite but I would love to hear her on a flagship BBC show like Woman's Hour.

I've got a horrible feeling they'll agree to do this topic, but the panel will be Grace Lavery, someone from the Fawcett Society and a Twitter wokebro who thinks men should be playing women's rugby.

KathyMunro · 26/07/2022 16:55

I would like to ask them about social contagion re gender ideology is happening, ask Transgender Trend on to talk to them about the hotspots they're seeing in schools in various local authorities. (Yes, Gender Butterflies, Mermaids, Stonewall etc have had some influence, probably through the LA).

KathyMunro · 26/07/2022 16:56

That's okay, too. We definitely want more of Grace Lavery on the radio.

Ramblingnamechanger · 26/07/2022 21:33

No sorry, I cannot bear to hear that Grace person again. Once was enough. Interesting about the numbers requesting that they interview all the strong women we know. I wrote in on your views to suggest Maya but had no idea everyone else was doing the same! Let’s see.

sweetgrapes · 26/07/2022 21:54

Great suggestions on the thread - but I am really waiting for the movies to come out.

There's enough material for whole series of movies on fantastic women. I just hope I live long enough to see them made.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 26/07/2022 21:58

The day Posie gets on the BBC and they don’t apologise afterwards, we’ll know we’ve made progress.

CriticalCondition · 28/07/2022 10:39

On WH just now Emma Barnett just read out a brilliant email from a listener pointing out to her guest Caroline Nokes that menopause is determined by sex not gender identity. CN firmly nailed her colours to the mast by saying TW can go through menopause too and waffling on about lovely TWs who offered her their bottles of HRT when there was a shortage.

Hmm. It came across very badly. I think CN may have peaked a few more listeners who went 'Whaaat??'.

And it gives me hope that WH will pick up the challenge on this one.

Ramblingnamechanger · 28/07/2022 10:43

Yes critical, I heard that, Caroline definitely not a friend to women.

CriticalCondition · 28/07/2022 10:53

The listener's message was really clear, solid fact-based sense. Bet they are on MN!

Caroline Nokes took the opportunity to double down on her support for self ID. By talking about poor TWs in the context of menopause support she came across as a complete loon.

KittenKong · 28/07/2022 10:53

Tw have menopause? Did she mean tm? Or us she really that ignorant?
