If you have a Conservative MP and want to protect the rights of women and safeguard children please email them TONIGHT and ask them to support Kemi.

Penny Mordaunt still the bookies favourite (and they aren't often wrong) but we need to let everyone know how dangerous it will be for this woman to become PM; I don't believe she has changed her mind for one moment.

The ways people will contort themselves to be pro Kemi Badenoch is absolutely unbelievable. Just when I think it can’t get any more bonkers, something like this comes up.

You’re seriously suggesting that leftists who don’t want her as PM hold that view because she is black? Her race is irrelevant to me. It’s her views that are abhorrent.

I think the contortion is coming from the left

If the straight questions in pp by Beastly were answered it might start to become clear why

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 13:18

I think KB’s stance on racism is spot on, actually. Racism is not okay. No, not everyone and every institutes racist. Pretending otherwise actually gives racists a place to hide (“well, everyone is racist so...”) and actually, a black female PM represents greater diversity even when she doesn’t agree with you on economic or cultural issues - she doesn’t have to.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 13:20

She does if she wants your vote.

Babdoc · 19/07/2022 13:26

Ok, so here we have a gender critical, black woman, mother of 3, with a master’s degree in engineering and a law degree, work experience in IT and banking (with Coutts, no less!) an MP who has held two ministerial positions- and people are criticising her?
Surely she’s our dream candidate? Multi tasker par excellence, intelligent, family values, feminist supporter…. what’s not to like?

Manteiga · 19/07/2022 13:30

@MarshaBradyo: Sunder Katwala says "Britain First are trolling & say so on their Telegram".

That would explain "its amazing how easy it is to troll the establishment" & the laughing emojis. So not a hoax, but not sincere.

@Blossomtoes

She’s getting my vote if she wins so we’re fine there.

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 13:32

@Babdoc

Exactly - what more could she do?

This is a common trend, actually. People have started identifying achievement as privilege. I don’t want someone as PM who is intellectually sub-par and has never been promoted in their job, so I guess that’s an impasse.

It's a shame that people don't want to have a conversation about it. I believe most people are well-intentioned but for some reason there is a really entrenched idea on the left that black people are only allowed to have left wing views or "they ain't black" or they must be connected to fascist organisations or something. The idea that you could be a black centrist or conservative really seems to blow people's minds!

Pp aren’t answering as it doesn’t fit comfortably with the left’s perception of where they stand.

Your questions were not rude or insulting, just hard to answer directly by some on the left

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 13:36

What’s not to like? Climate change denier, state shrinker - as if austerity hasn’t already left it threadbare - and wealth redistributor from the poor to the rich. That’s plenty not to like for me.

MangyInseam · 19/07/2022 13:37

I think the issue is that the people who believe this also think that anyone who disagrees about the existence/nature of systemic racism, or the kind of thinking that goes along with it, is a terrible bigot.

As far as they are concerned the only reason someone could say something like that is outright bigotry, because it's obviously true, and black people say that it's true. They know it is true and are liars, or at best are extremely stupid.

So when someone who is black says something like that, he or she is not only a liar, but also some kind of terrible quisling.

I agree; I think she's great! I'm sure I don't agree with her on everything, but I don't need to. I'd be delighted to have a PM of such quality.

What's not to like? Well, I think that she represents a genuine threat to the left and they know it. They are going to struggle to use some of their favourite tactics against a PM like Kemi.

If she's PM, I can totally see myself voting for her in the next election..

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 13:48

‘Well, I think that she represents a genuine threat to the left and they know it. They are going to struggle to use some of their favourite tactics against a PM like Kemi.’

She’s Starmer’s nightmare, isn’t she?

MarshaBradyo · 19/07/2022 13:51

I have seen posts from left stating U.K. is too racist to vote for Kemi

And now promoting the BF alleged press release

They’ll have to decide which angle to go for

It’s all murky leftist smear tbh

Cailleach1 · 19/07/2022 14:09

It is very interesting how the 'guilt by association' works. Just as an illustrative point, I was surprised at something about Oswald Mosley.

I certainly have no respect or admiration for the 'British Union of Fascists'. However, when a young Conservative MP, Mosley crossed the floor to sit as an independent MP. This was because he deplored the atrocities committed against Irish civilians by the 'Black and Tans'. By the way, he had also condemned the Amritsar massacre. He was a believer in the League of Nations and condemned the Amritsar massacre in India as ‘Prussian frightfulness inspired by racism .

Now, I think it was a bad thing for Irish civilians to be attacked and/or murdered by the Black and Tans. Does that make me a bad person because Oswald Mosley thought so too? Also, is the Amritsar Massacre to be lauded because Mosley thought otherwise?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/07/2022 14:15

there’s no doubt she’s an achiever, who seems admirably clear about her views, but none of that tells me what she’ll do to the country

she’s a very small state, get on your bike type of conservative

I think she’d be bad news

I didn't know anything about Mosley, so I've just been reading about him on Wikipedia. His political views certainly seem to have been very complicated (not to mention his love life!)

My question is always, what parts of the state does this person think should be small?

I do think that overall an intelligent PM is generally better than a stupid one, even a stupid one with the right viewpoints.

This is a good point, about an intelligent PM being best. I'm always dismayed when people say of a politician they oppose "And the worst thing is, (s)he's really clever too!". Kemi's small-state stuff doesn't particularly resonate with me, but since she's an intelligent, independent -minded and grounded woman, I'm interested to know her take on it. I also would like to think that in office, she would adapt to the situation in front of her and make intelligent and pragmatic decisions. We know from the gender stuff (and from the testimony of her colleagues) that she nails the details.

MangyInseam · 19/07/2022 14:34

Yes, Notmanybroadbeans that from my perspective is the most appealing thing about her.

PMs who have the right policy ideas aren't so great when they don't implement them in a way that is effective or are convinced by stupid ideas. Political policy requires a real understanding of phenomena, an ability to listen to different explanations and views and understand them, and , as you say, attention to detail.

It would be disastrous if she tore up the Northern Ireland Protocol and caused a hard No Deal Brexit as she has threatened.

That's a price I'm willing to pay for the safety of women and girls.

I wish I shared your sang froid. But I have to live in Ireland.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/07/2022 15:06

Interesting graphic in the DM, based on YouGov polling of Conservative members of the outcome if the vote went to members:

If Kemi made it to the final two she would win against Sunak by quite a margin and win against Truss and Mordaunt but by a smaller margin.

Truss would win against Sunak and Mordaunt

Mordaunt would win against Sunak.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 15:07

She’s gone. It’ll be interesting to see where her 59 votes go.

achillestoes · 19/07/2022 15:08

It will. Not Mordaunt, I’d assume.

bellinisurge · 19/07/2022 15:12

Truss will get Badenoch's votes. Maybe a few to Sunak. Mordaunt definitely won't get any of them.

Rich kid vs ThatcherBot with Liar dumped out.
What a selection.
Pity Labour are still so shit.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/07/2022 15:12

Ah that's interesting she has gone considering that graphic showing how the members would vote.
