Just in case anyone wanted to ask her anything.

I’d guess that when PM was saying all the TWAW stuff she thought it sounded progressive but hadn’t put any thought into it. There are many people like that.

since then she’s been confronted with what TWAW actually means and the consequences of saying it’s true, and she’s had a big change of heart. Again, there are many people in that position (including me if you go back far enough - it was the Helen Steel stuff that woke me up).

She should just be honest and admit this. I admire people who change their mind when confronted with new evidence.

LizzieSiddal · 12/07/2022 21:39

Sooty I can’t link directly but Tim Shipman, Chief political editor of the Sunday Times has just tweeted this regarding what PM has just said to Iain Dale…

In response to this, someone senior has just messaged me that, once again, Penny has told "a total lie”

LizzieSiddal · 12/07/2022 21:41

And Tim Shipman’s latest Tweet
Now someone in No 10 gets in touch: "You [ie me] are 100% right on this. Everyone who was involved knows it's a complete invention [by Penny Mordaunt]." I think people might be more impressed if she told us what she thinks, rather than taking MPs and the Lobby for fools

CharlotteOH · 12/07/2022 21:35

I just read the article you linked and if you look again, nowhere in it did she say she supports self ID. She does say that the GRC process needs to be reformed and easier to use but she deliberately avoids saying how, and instead says she is listening to everyone and to women’s groups in particular. It’s actually quite a good interview.

But in the Pink News article there's this:

"Trans women are women, that is the starting point for this consultation."

I don't believe that men are women. She does. She's on record, including from the Despatch Box representing the Government, saying this very forcefully.

She can never represent me on this.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/07/2022 21:45

So I’ve never supported self ID, there are some people that socially transition but what we were looking at was the GRA, and it’s a process that people go through. There was clamour to separate that out from healthcare and I disagreed with that so what you’ve said Nicola is not a reflection of my position at any time.

It's all just semantics.

She can honestly say that she 'doesn't support Self-ID' because (in her mind) she simply supports 'making the process easier' and because there's a 'process' it's not 'self-ID.

Perhaps she just didn't realise at the time that one person's 'making the process easier' is another person's 'introducing self-ID'.

teawamutu · 12/07/2022 21:46

I'm hoping that the lying will get some momentum, even if not all members are gripped by the issue itself.

Surely after the Johnson debacle they don't want to install another proven liar?

rogdmum · 12/07/2022 21:49

That doesn’t mean they’re identical to me and a lot of the issues you’re hearing now, I was talking about 3 or 4 years ago. I set up an enquiry into a lot of young girls being moved into trans services for example,

She did not! Nothing came of it, it was supposed to go to tender and then silence (and ignoring emails asking about it). Is she trying to take credit for the Cass Review? I hope not.

What a liar!

GCAcademic · 12/07/2022 21:50

She has form for shameless lying. Remember before the Brexit vote when she stated that the U.K. did not have a veto to stop Turkey joining the EU?

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 12/07/2022 21:53

This cements my view that Penny Mordaunt will stone cold lie about what she has said or promised and not delivered.

Her campaign video says nothing about her at all. What conflicting things is she promising to who in order to win?

Signalbox · 12/07/2022 21:55

The trans activists don't believe her either. Here's Ben Cohen saying how the LGBTQ+ community will be surprised to hear her say that she has never supported self ID. If she didn't support it she did a really good job of hiding that fact from everyone.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/07/2022 21:57

Josephine Bartosch in the Critic details what's happened, pointing out that:
Had Mordaunt simply stated that she had reconsidered she would have attracted criticism and praise from each side of the ideological divide. But to simply deny her former beliefs shows poor judgement, a lack of respect for would-be voters and a flexible attitude to the truth .

Signalbox · 12/07/2022 22:00

Wow is this a rare moment where trans activists and GC feminists can actually agree on something...

That Penny Mordaunt is a liar.

Mollyollydolly · 12/07/2022 22:09

Isn't it great to see this issue up there. I'm not a Conservative but if I was no way would Mordaunt get my vote. She's managed to piss off everyone, Ben Cohen slagging her off on twitter tonight. What tangled webs we weave. I hope Starmer is taking note.

This came up in the interview as well and she doubled down on the lie. She was slick compared to hapless Zahawi and she lies with total aplomb. But then so did BJ and that's why he had to go.

LondonBased · 12/07/2022 22:26

The more people lie, the better at it they get. One can only hope enough people will call it out.

EdgeOfACoin · 12/07/2022 22:27

Thing is, everyone could tell when Boris was lying. He just didn't care.

Penny comes across as very sincere. She'll fool a lot of people.

The Sunday papers will be interesting

Cuck00soup · 12/07/2022 22:52

That's an interesting thought. So PM + Sunak get to the final 2, then the Sunday papers do their worst.

And Sunak walks it. Just as Rupert Murdoch wants.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 12/07/2022 22:56

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/07/2022 20:21

IF she's shifted her pervious TWAW position then that's really significant as she realises it's a bar to being elected.
And if she's falsely claiming that she never tried to remove the word mother and supports women's safe single sex spaces and sports, then she's demonstrating to Starmer and his merry band of misogynists what a golden bridge looks like.

And if she's upset the Owen Jones of the world then that's an added bonus. Am happy to welcome her to the side of facts, logic and women's rights while keeping a beady eye on her for any backtracking

I don’t think it’s a surprise that this would be a bar to conservative party members

I know two things about Mordaunt that she wouldn't want to be 'out there'. If little old me knows them then the political editors obviously know them too, and a lot more. They'll bide their time.

Gosh, I remember that. Brass neck with pants on fire. Even Cameron had to say that PM was just wrong about that.

Signalbox · 12/07/2022 23:13

Even if what PM is saying, about never supporting self ID and having suggested the changes to the wording of the maternity bill, is true (which seems unlikely) that means that she is a really shit communicator because nobody appears to be aware that that was her position. And to suggest that people are actually attempting to misrepresent her is really arrogant.

PennyMordor · 12/07/2022 23:26

Indeed, @Signalbox

Who is 'misrepresenting' her? Ben Cohen? Owen Jones? David Paisley? Liz Truss? Suella Braverman? Caroline Nokes? Maria Miller? It's nuts.

Wonder what her old pal Crispin Blunt (still an MP) thinks of all this. And (Lord) Nick Herbert. This surely wasn't part of the script.

Manderleyagain · 12/07/2022 23:32

This is fascinating.

We always knew that people who had parroted the mantras (not the genuine true believers but those who said all the words) would just quietly stop doing it and act as though they never had done. But that hasn't been allowed to happen here because of everyone saying #anybutpenny and reminding everyone of her twaw moments. Rather than quietly dropping it she has decided to actively pretend she believed & said & did things completely differently than she did. Like someone retro fitting their new trans identity onto their past, but the opposite.

I actually believed she was a true believer. If not why was she doing it? It's infuriating to see someone deny that she pushed for self id. We fought against self id because the government wanted it. We stopped it. But those we argued against are re writing history to deny the battle ever happened. It makes the golden bridge tricky.
