Is CIS a legal term?

purpleboy · 11/07/2022 12:01

So I had a conversation with a friend the other day who is adamant Cis is an accurate descriptor of women and that it is written into law?
I asked where but she couldn't specify just stating it's a factual term (referencing women) that is legally recognized.
I've had a look and can't seem to find anything to back this up, but I know the wise women here will know if there is any truth to this.
Thanks in advance.

Tobee, can you not use Google? It's not that hard.

I have taken this quote from the government website. "Cisgender: Used in this report to refer to people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth – people who are not transgender."

Apollo442 · 11/07/2022 17:45

Oh so you could have been assigned male if they were in the mood? No? You weren't 'assigned' anything. Your sex was observed.

Cis literally just means your gender identity matches the sex you were born as.

There's no 'matching'. You are either male or female. Whether you decide to embrace a bunch of unnecessary stereotypes which have traditionally been associated with your sex or prefer the ones associated with the opposite sex is purely a matter of personality, and should not necessitate the twisting of existing, perfectly clear and adequate language, or the creation of new category labels for human beings (literally all of whom already fit into the existing, factual, non-stereotyped, non-personality-dependent categories: women and men).

People are welcome to decide that their own personalities and stereotype preferences put them in a new category, but they don't get to decide that means new categories for everyone else, however loudly they bang on about it.

DialSquare · 11/07/2022 17:46

Maybe sites should stay having a tick box for Handmaiden.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 17:48

The doctors don't assign your sex 😂 however sex is determined assigns it, so way before you were born

tobee · 11/07/2022 17:52

But the sperm & egg dont assign anything either.

tobee · 11/07/2022 17:54

I'm wondering if you know what assigned means?

It's clear that you think (or trying to persuade others to think) that a government report is the same as a law.

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 17:55

I'm out, I have better things to do than try to educate those who are happy being ignorant. Have fun! 😂

Signalbox · 11/07/2022 17:55

Are you transgender? No? Then you're cisgender. There's nothing offensive about it.

Nonsense. It is common on twitter to see trans activists state that they don't identify as either "cis" or "trans". Laurie Penny being a high profile example of those rejecting both terms.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 17:55

@godmum56 then stop telling me that everyone who isn't trans is therefore "cis" and recognise that that term only applies to those who believe in gender ideology and who aren't trans.

Yes I can see why you might decide now is a good time to be out.

Tobee, learn how to use Google. You'd learn lots of new things, how exciting! I bet you're about to explode with happiness at having knowledge at your finger tips!

I've just been using the google search engine for "Cisgender: Used in this report to refer to people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth – people who are not transgender."

Is this the page you mean?

Fenlandia · 11/07/2022 17:58

Hang on flolawri 4 minutes ago you said female was a gender identity now you say female is your "assigned sex"

Which is it? It can't be both a sex and a gender identity as these are different things - they have to be in order for transness to exist

Using google, the page I think you're quoting?

It has this at the top.

Please note that we are aware that the terminology used in relation to the recognition of people’s sexual orientation or gender identity may depend on the context of its use. Some people may define some terms differently to us. We have tried to use terminology that is generally accepted. No offence or omission is intended.

Please find below the definitions we have used.

It's not exactly defined in statute, is it?

Google the gtcs standards in Scotland .I'm not allowed to say I'm an atheist or that I vote for Nicola Sturgeon. We have had professional standards for years, you can't change that just because you don't like peoles' opinions.

Ok, I did.

They don't mention "cis" (or "trans", for that matter).

As for "I'm not allowed to say I'm an atheist or that I vote for Nicola Sturgeon" there is nothing obvious in the standards but I assume that as in England you are not allowed to share your political views WITH THE CHILDREN. (Did you miss that detail?)

Oh, and the standards also require:

  • critically examining professional beliefs, values and attitudes of self and others
  • challenging assumptions, biases and professional practice.
That is, you are expressly required NOT to blindly accept whatever you are told.

Yes, yes I believe google is used when questions of law are made and enacted.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 18:02

@Flolawri how rude to call people disagreeing with you and explaining why, ignorant. It makes you seem very intolerant of differing opinions and also incapable of explaining or defending your own position.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 11/07/2022 18:07

Flolawri · 11/07/2022 17:38

But I am female... I was born female so I have it?

And yes, female is a gender identity. There wouldn't be transwomen if they didn't identify as female?

What do you put when sites ask what gender you are? Female? Thought so.

that is a hang over from paper forms, when tedious individuals would put in "yes please" if it asked for sex.

Sex is male or female.

You're being obtuse here.

What we say behind closed doors is one thing (although I support trans and the words so it doesnt wffect me) but anyone on here claiming they would tell the headtescher they're not using the word and stomp about is talking utter bollocks and you know it.

That's exactly what they do.

RoseslnTheHospital · 11/07/2022 18:14

What?? There's no assigning of sex done by egg and sperm. One random sperm is first to break through the egg and fertilise it. If it is carrying an X chromosome the resulting embryo will be female. If it is carrying a Y chromosome then it is male. No assigning happens.

beautyisthefaceisee · 11/07/2022 18:14

@Flolawri , argh, come on.

There's not many of us on the "other side" of the debate and we need to hang on to the little bit of credibility we have - don't be rude to people!
