... makes no mention of her standing at the Dispatch Box in Parliament saying TWAW TMAM.

Tell us you've changed your mind , Penny, or don't bother.

I agree kat, and maybe she is, at the same time it's just occurred to me that I feel all the candidates will make sure they know what a woman is right now. Their party is behind them.

I want to see Labour (and the other parties) U turning.

I can't work out with a hangover if this will impact the other sides or not.

WarriorN · 10/07/2022 15:10

From what I can glean someone has fucked up her ad; including an image of Jo Cox and Oscar Pitoruius?!

teawamutu · 10/07/2022 15:11

Does worry me a bit that if the Tories go full TERF, Labour will double down on TWAW.

as the SNP cry "hold my beer"...

Delighted this is part of the conversation around any leadership bid. Keep pulling!

HPFA · 10/07/2022 15:25

Frankly this whole Tory leadership battle is an embarrassment.

We have candidates promising huge tax cuts without a mention of how these would be funded, vague nonsense about destroying "wokeness" as if this was the nation's priority or even possible, threats to Net Zero in the face of environmental catastrophe and cynical manoeuverings around women's rights about which I doubt any of the candidates give a rat's arse.

I'm not going to vote for this shower.

If Labour do get into power I suspect they will introduce self-ID but maintain single-sex exemptions - there will be so many massive problems to deal with that I doubt whether they'll have the energy to do anything else. Tony Blair had a massive majority but that didn't save him from a world of trouble over the fox hunting ban and this would be the same. I'd sooner take the chance I'm wrong about that than vote for a party that has done, is doing and will do so much catastrophic damage.

@LarryBlackmonsCodpiece The comments on that times article, holy hell. The tide is a turning

@Tabasco007

Wrong. The GRA gives the right to be treated as your acquired gender for most legal purposes.

You are almost right, but the difference is important. What the GRA does not do is legally declare that someone is a man or a woman. It also does not entitle a person making use of it to override the provisions in the Equality Act for single sex spaces, because they are not their legal sex. They are still the sex they were born.

If there continues to be this sort of argument about this, more and more people will demand the repeal of the GRA.

I had no idea this was the case!

ZaraSizeMedium · 10/07/2022 15:38

I can't see the comments on the Times article, assuming you have to be a subscriber to see them?

SerfwithaT · 10/07/2022 15:40

@WarriorN That is huge, almost makes you think someone on her campaign doesn't like her!

WarriorN · 10/07/2022 15:53

Exactly what I was thinking!

It's weasley words. There's biological women and legal women but at no point does she say both types of women shouldn't be treated the same, at no point does she say that 'legal' women of the non biological kind shouldn't have full access to women's spaces. She's saying a lot of words without actually saying anything. If twaw then all her words still apply

ZaraSizeMedium · 10/07/2022 16:08

Thank you @McDuffy - I cancelled my Times subscription in disgust maybe 3 years ago, but have thought more and more over the past 12 months about resubscribing.

I shouldn’t really reply to this but I am a) old and b) obviously stupid.
If someone has a penis and testicles they are a man. If they have physically and chemically decided to present as a woman by removing those genitalia then they can. There seem to be far fewer transmen maybe because it is surgically simpler to remove the outward and visible signs of masculinity than it is to reproduce them.

The problem is, Self ID means that men don't have to do any of that (removal of said testicles), just self declare as a woman, sign a form and hey presto - are supposed to be legally accepted as women for all purposes. The vast majority of transwomen (i.e. biological males) don't undergo any surgery.

This is obviously problematic for women, and is why there are male rapists with full functioning penises in women's prisons, males competing in women's sports etc.

If you think it would never happen, it's already happening.

It's gone up to £26 a month but allowed several devices for that so my mum and sister use mine too.

I'm all for u-turning, great please please do, but...

This isn't just some celebrity, it's a potential PM. I need them to have an absolutely squeaky clean background on this issue to truly trust them with this, which sadly she doesn't have.

I'm very happy she's realising this issue really does matter and hopefully this'll inform her as an MP, but I would not want her to be PM.

It seems that as the tide is turning from the absolute TWAW team, she is jumping ship too.

Im glad people are realising that TWAW is not concrete anymore, but I hope she’s not doing it just because everyone else is, and because she realises It’s not true

Is she jumping ship?

I don’t think she is.

Her tweets are all about gender and not sex

She supports women. In her terms that also includes men who have decided to change gender.

I thought the term of dressing and presenting as someone of the opposite sex was transvestite

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/07/2022 11:21

It used to be, but no longer

Needmoresleep · 11/07/2022 12:10

I would be interested in which women's groups she consulted when launching the GRA reform consultation. WPUK, Fair Play for Women?

And the balance of consultation between trans lobby groups like Stonewall and those concerned about the protection of women's sex based rights.

TheirEminence · 11/07/2022 17:41

Building golden bridges for those who change their mind is all very well but it seems like she has actually been lying in that twitter thread (about the word 'woman' in maternity legislation - which she did not fight to re-insert). Somebody who is lying is maybe not someone I want on my fancy bridge in case they vandalise it.

MissusPongo · 11/07/2022 17:52

I actually think what she says in the thread is ok as far as it goes (not that far). She doesn't address what she thinks being legally female (but biologically male) means re access to women's spaces nor anything about self ID but her characterisation of people born male being legally female after the gender recognition process is accurate.

I think part of what all this uncovers is how many people have been saying TWAW to mean something like "obviously TWANW but I want to be supportive of them and their right to present themselves to the world as they are" and now seem surprised that people have taken them literally, while (as anyone paying attention is aware) other people meant them literally all along.

Yes. And as soon as you say the real answer, you’re a ‘te*f’, as Penny found out yesterday. Being compassionate isn’t good enough, you have to lie.
