Reading that Times article (thanks for the share token) I think it's just so sad and disappointing.
On the face of it she has a lot going for her. She didn't attend private school which is refreshing and rare these days for MPs on either side of the aisle, but particularly tories (nothing wrong with PS but it makes her a bit more relatable for people like myself)
Her mother died young and she was the main carer for her brother but worked hard, and paid for six form by becoming a magician's assistant no less.
First in her family to attend university, put her degree to work. Has trained in the Navy and been a reservist. Has co-authored a book.
This is great. This is the sort of background that invokes respect and would get me wanting to vote for a party headed by this woman.
Then you get this: Announcing the Gender Recognition Act in the Commons, Mordaunt said the legislation would be a “culture change” in the UK and that the equality of those who were born a woman and those who were not would be the “starting point ... and finishing point” of the consultation.
And this: Mordaunt reiterated her stance last year while paymaster general, repeating at the dispatch box that “trans men are men and trans women are women” during a debate on maternity allowances. It is claimed she tried to get the word “mother” removed from the maternity bill,
What a very big shame.
Constrast: The reforms were scrapped in 2020 by Liz Truss, now another contender for the Tory leadership, who said plans for “self ID” would not be brought forward because she felt the original legislation struck the right balance
It was a choice between two female candidates it would be Liz Truss who would be getting my vote. As a woman I just will never vote for a party headed by anyone who throws our right to women only spaces away and obfuscates feminine titles with neutral terminology.
That said PM has a twin who I think feels TWAW so it's hard for her and explains why she's trying to do a balancing act between two positions......
