I was very disappointed in the sexist photo the Times chose in its article on the potential candidates. All very ‘Page 3’.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 10:49

@KatVonlabonk

How do you come back from that statement?

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 10:55

I just read that Mordaunt unfollowed Helen Dale when she reviewed GC books positively.

onedayiwillmissthis · 08/07/2022 11:23

OldCrone...thanks for the link. Apologies to Tanni GT for being unaware of her speech.

However, the link I posted to a UKActive page gives Transgender Access Guidance and suggests...

"Does the individual want to use a changing or toilet facility that is consistent with the gender in which they present?" Allow Access.

And this (my italics)

"Changing:
Many facilities differ in terms of changing facilities available. You should support customers to use the changing facilities that are best for them.

Sex-segregated changing could be an option and a trans person should be permitted to use whichever single-sex area they choose.
How ever an operator may restrict access to this area if doing so can be objectively justified as a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

A customer may prefer to use separate changing facilities but they should not be forced to do so without prior discussion and agreement."

UKActive also suggest Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence & Mermaids for further reading.

UKActive therefore seem to be advocating that the choice of a trans person takes priority over anything else. As Chair of UKActive Tanni GT would be expected to be aware of this?

Nominations so far:

Tom Tugendhat - 5
Liz Truss - 3 ("women have vaginas")
Suella Braverman - 2 ("[a child born male] shouldn't use girls' toilets")
Jeremy Hunt - 2
Penny Mordaunt - 1 ("TWAW")

As I understand it, only the top two once all nominations are in will be put to the members. It's too early to call.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 12:26

@DdraigGoch

Where’s that info from, please?

MoleAtTheCounter · 08/07/2022 12:43

Mordaunt delivered a speech in the House of Commons just before the Easter recess in 2013 on poultry welfare so as to use the word "cock". She used the word "cock" six times and "lay" or "laid" five times. Following her comments, she was accused by Labour MP Kate Hoey of trivializing parliament.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 13:01

That photo of her in her scanties in The Times 😱

But it looks like she’s a serious problem. She’s just topped a poll by Tories in Comms. She’s popular with the membership. I can only hope she doesn’t get enough nominations.

Mordaunt did for a bet with her navy pals, didn't she?

She can be really immature at times.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 07:42

She’s popular because they think she can get some lefty votes, and because she’s polished and very credible.

Agree. Also because many people don't know what she has said and done re gender. And what she'll do if given the chance. Most of those Tory party member saying they'd vote her would be horrified. It just needs greater publicity.

I hope every interviewer asks her what a woman is...

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 13:49

@ChristinaXYZ

Absolutely - let’s make noise about it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/07/2022 13:50

That photo of her in her scanties in The Times 😱

They would never do that to a man.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 13:54

@YetAnotherSpartacus

No, they wouldn’t. Nice picture of Ben Wallace in fatigues. Nadhim Zahawi all suited up. Penny in her cozzie. Disgraceful.

I still couldn’t vote for her.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 08/07/2022 14:09

No, I could not vote for her either. It’s still disgraceful though. And somewhat ironic.

Ohhhhladz · 08/07/2022 14:15

I don't understand how Mordaunt (and Hunt) are being touted as left-leaning or progressive choices within the Conservative party.

Mordaunt was (is?) a Brexit headbanger and xenophobe who lied during the Brexit campaign about "a million Turks" coming to the UK (as Turkey was, according to her, just about to join the EU, despite coming nowhere near meeting the criteria over decades as a candidate.) When challenged, she insisted that EU countries do not have an accession veto (they did, and do). Surely after the trouble of getting Johnson out Conservative MPs and members don't immediately want another blatant liar and Pound Shop Farrage anti-EU hardliner?

Even stranger to paint her as a unity candidate. Mordaunt (after Hunt) would be a gift to Scottish separatists, who are already lobbying for a general election to use as a mandate for independence. (We're past the risk of Johnson calling one to hang on, but it's still possible a new leader/PM would call one to establish legitimacy). The SNP line now is that the Conservatives AND Labour are committed Brexiteers / EUrohobes and therefore can't represent Scotland. Mordaunt as PM defending the next election is in some ways even better than Johnson, as she looks like she actually believes her paranoid nonsense.

Mollyollydolly · 08/07/2022 14:20

Trouble is Johnson slung out so many reasonable tory voices (Rory, Stewart, David Gauke, Ken Clarke etc) that they are much more to the right than they were previously so someone like Mordaunt is now perceived as fairly moderate. I'm interested to know what Tugendhat thinks as he's always seemed sensible and has some integrity. Suspect he's never given it much thought.

Tallisker · 08/07/2022 14:29

McDuffy · 08/07/2022 09:12

I had the idea that Tanni GT was GC but can't remember why.

She appeared on Baroness Nicholson's webinars and said along the lines of if people with disabilities had the same sort of focus and money spent on meeting their needs that trans people do, there wouldn't be any problems left for them. Ie, all their needs would have been met.

achillestoes · 08/07/2022 14:50

Grant Schapps just launched his bid. We’re going to need a bigger boat.

Guido. Now a second nomination for Mordaunt.

Grant Schapps just launched his bid. We’re going to need a bigger boat.

A boat crewed by agency staff?

To be honest, I'd tolerate him as Prime Minister if only because it keeps him one step away from controlling a department. The sooner we get him out of the DfT the better, Grayling was bad enough.

ResisterRex · 08/07/2022 16:32

There were snaps of Cameron on the beach and, IIRC, he'd rather caught the sun that day.

Presumably it was published as silly season filler while he was on holiday. Not the same as doing it during his leadership campaign.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/07/2022 16:38

The Times aren't describing her TWAW stance as a weakness though.🤔

ResisterRex · 08/07/2022 16:43

Second story in the Telegraph online. Most likely archived somewhere

Penny Mordaunt’s pro-trans stance has ‘ruined her chances’ of becoming Tory leader
