JK and the Manx flag

I'm a huge fan of Jo and I'm far along the GC Road. But can anyone explain what the hell is going on with her thirder Twitter comments and her use of the Manx flag. I'm Manx myself and I'm not entirely OK with it, not least because it's not helping the GC argument at all here.

Have obviously name changed for this thread.

I have CPTSD. And ADHD. And OCD.

I like to joke that I have lots of letters after my name - I’m Shirley Jackson, BA MA PGCE ADHD CTPSD OCD FUBAR 😂

If I crumpled into a ball every time anyone made a throwaway comment about any of my conditions, you’d have to roll me around the place. I’d never get chance to straighten up.

That’s my attitude. I can either curl up in a ball sobbing, or just let it slide, and maybe make a joke about it. Life is too short and too precious to take offence at every little ‘micro aggression’.

DialSquare · 04/07/2022 21:39

From what I can tell, it's all to do with JKR joking she is only 66% straight after the original lunch. So as PP have said, it's evolved to thirder from that.

If it makes you feel any better OP, I'm from London. I wish I had a £1 for every time I heard someone talk negatively about it!

And again

I very clearly quoted comments people on here had made, not the comments JKR etc had made

Christ, I’m from Hull, on top of everything else.

And I’m ginger 😂

I would say people have been rude and taken the piss out of the IOM actually. And yes people can bleat on about how women don't have to #bekind etc but honestly this has nothing to do with women, or GC, or feminism, its just a very English centric attitude (these specific posts)

Yes - this, and I really, really didn't expect it.
I have learnt so much from the feminism boards here, I admire JK, I have sent her cards of support and I worry about the toll all this takes on her. But some of these responses have really made me question the type of people I have been learning from. I've been on and around Mumsnet a long time, I don't believe women should roll over and be kind and I'm not generally nationalistic, there are things about my nationality that I'm not proud of. Call me naive, I didn't expect some of these responses. I wouldn't expect and I doubt there would be similar remarks about my Celtic sisters - Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany and Cornwall.
It's probably best to leave this here as this discussion has gone far beyond JK.

Unfortunately as a welsh person I think you will find its just as likely there would be similar remarks about Scotish, Irish, Welsh etc people

Clear winner there. But isn’t hull a city of culture? So it could be worse, could be Basingstoke.

My in laws live in Basingstoke so I'm saying nothing!

ShirleyJackson · 04/07/2022 21:45

Oh, it could be worse alright.

I could still live there.

Morverner · 04/07/2022 21:54

@RoseslnTheHospital

To be fair, that's a good point. I'm reacting to the comments not the posters.

@Conflictedunicorn

If you have an issue with my name change then report it. I'm sure MN can verify my name and location. I'm an oversharer, but not about to out myself to a small community.

And to the pp who'd like to visit, the island is the most beautiful place when the sun shines, unfortunately it rains a lot!

I'm also ginger, but mainly grey these days 🤔

As an aside, if you’re from the IOM how is that your nationality? Surely you’re British as the IOM is, erm, in GB?

Its possible to be both British and Welsh. And given people from the IOM get their own passport I'm pretty sure its possible to be both British and Manx

Don’t tell the TRA they’d be all over that. I’m waiting for penishaverchester and prostatehaversfield

nocoolnamesleft · 04/07/2022 22:13

Blimey. I take it if she'd used the Sicilian three legs symbol, the mafia would be after her.

Badlifeday · 04/07/2022 22:49

Do they still have horse drawn teams in Douglas? <remembers great childhood holiday>

Badlifeday · 04/07/2022 22:51

trams

IoM isn't in GB, the UK or the EU (not that we got a Brexit vote, despite being affected by it). We are in the British Isles and we have our own passport, embarrassingly I'd have to go and find mine to tell you the wording on the front. But when the UK was in the EU, our passport had a disclaimer that prevented us from having the same rights as the UK. to work in the EU etc.

But we are British and as Covidagainandagain mentions, people can be Welsh and British or Manx and British etc

@Badlifeday

It's a sore subject, the prom in Douglas has been completely overhauled, much money spent, many mistakes have been made. I've lost track of how long it's gone on now, but the horse trams still aren't running, there is a promise that they will be back at the end of this month. I won't hold my breath.

Can someone clear up some geography for me.
Is the Isle of Man a country?
I saw people on Twitter saying it is their national flag.
Why do they call themselves Manx. I thought this was some inclusive word for Manchester!

Maybe we should just ban all flags. They cause so much trouble.

They've been calling themselves Manx (various spellings) for a very long time - it derives from the Old Norse. And I understand they have one of the world's oldest continuously sitting parliaments,

Morverner · 04/07/2022 23:26

The Man part of IoM doesn't mean a penis bearer (although I initially read that as Penis beaker!). It's actually short for Manannan - the sea god who protects the island with his (I guess he is male) cloak of mist.

Manx are an ethnic group - it was part of Norway until the 13th century and has a now largely extinct (I believe) version of the Gaelic language.
The flag is their national flag in the same way the St George is the national flag for England
The IOM is a British crown dependency - it is self governing and not part of the UK.
It has its own passport and wasn't part of the EU in the same way the UK was.
It has its own government, can make its own laws, taxation rules and controls its own expenditure.
Its not a country as such, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its own identity and nationality.
