JK and the Manx flag

I'm a huge fan of Jo and I'm far along the GC Road. But can anyone explain what the hell is going on with her thirder Twitter comments and her use of the Manx flag. I'm Manx myself and I'm not entirely OK with it, not least because it's not helping the GC argument at all here.

Have obviously name changed for this thread.

And my point which got lost amid the nationalism- and believe me I'm not usually one to defend the island. But she has poked the nest of transactivists on local media here, really we could have without it.

That’s all the unicorns in the naughty corner @TastefulRainbowUnicorn ooops. I’ve got wine?

Saucery · 04/07/2022 20:25

I thought JB’s tweet was taking the piss out of the LGBTQA+ZFHU alphabet soup? That she’d deliberately not called it PTSD to highlight the nonsensical weaponising of PTSD by some people.

”2 women share in-joke” just doesn’t generate enough froth in some quarters, does it? Hmm

To be fair, jk breathing does that. It’s why she gives no more fucks

Morverner · 04/07/2022 20:27

It's clearly nothing personal against the good citizens of the Isle of Man!

No, I initially asked what was it all about. JK hasn't said anything insulting towards the island as far as I know. But some of the comments here haven't been pleasant.

Do you know what’s worse for those of us with PTSD? People like Laurie Penny saying she has PTSD from a bad book review or that Travis twit having PTSD from someone looking at him. Jokes I can deal with, people trivialising my condition for pity points and kudos I cannot.

This.

I've suffered from trauma, I'm so much better now.

Julie works for and with young women who have ptsd as a result of male violence and trafficking.

She's taking the piss out of people like Penny L.

Conflictedunicorn

🦄🍷🦄🍷

sick of the social pressure on unicorns to be kind and pretend we believe in genderbollocks tbh.

#UnicornsAreOverThisHorseShit

Datun · 04/07/2022 20:33

Julie Bindel helps women exit prostitution and has spent her entire life supporting women who are victims of male violence. She's not taking the piss out of PTSD 🙄

She's taking the piss out of people who take the piss out of PTSD.

Honestly, this faux nonsense is pathetic.

Conflictedunicorn · 04/07/2022 20:34

Can we start a club @TastefulRainbowUnicorn ? The unicorns of reality.

Exactly, and if enough people mock the fakers and call the, out, they’ll stop it, it’s why no one takes PTSD seriously any more. These fuckers like LP. It makes me so so angry that they get to use my condition for pity points. Not much gets me annoyed, I usually take the piss out if stuff but that upsets me.

Cailleach1 · 04/07/2022 20:38

Some things may be a bit of a joke though. i know sometimes people inadvertently display the Ivory Coast Flag instead of the Irish flag. It is just the other way around.

Somewhere, there are people from the Ivory Coast saying, not the Irish flag again. We're different countries.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 04/07/2022 20:42

Ha! I’m kind of liking RealityBasedUnicorn as a possible name change.

it is weird how unicorns have become a trans symbol, now I think of it. There’s so much defiant insistence, in the face of absolutely no resistance whatsoever, that trans people exist!!!1!! and then they break out the unicorn and mermaid imagery all over the shop.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/07/2022 20:47

No, but there's a point where it's not OK to take the piss out of someone's nationality

this thread did take a turn for the worse, but I don't think anyone has done that have they?

flags do seem to bring out the worst in people

Cailleach1 · 04/07/2022 20:49

Also, the Irish flag was shown (to represent NI) at the Queen's jubilee. Again, it was the cause of much mirth. Now, I would be amazed if someone wasn't being a bit mischievous. But people never fail to amaze.

Manxers are ’up in arms’?? Look, just try to enjoy/endure your 30 seconds in the (very mild) spotlight, everyone will go back to ignoring your weird little island soon enough.

Haha, who cares about the Isle Of Man

it's like taking a visit to the 50's going to the IOM

All or has is the Douglas wheel and cats with no tails. And a bike race

I would say people have been rude and taken the piss out of the IOM actually. And yes people can bleat on about how women don't have to #bekind etc but honestly this has nothing to do with women, or GC, or feminism, its just a very English centric attitude (these specific posts)

Conflictedunicorn · 04/07/2022 21:04

So is it just the IOM we can’t mock, or is it any geographical location?

You know actually, trying to argue that you should be allowed to mock all geographical locations isnt making yourself out to be the hero you think it is

Yes - this, and I really, really didn't expect it.
I have learnt so much from the feminism boards here, I admire JK, I have sent her cards of support and I worry about the toll all this takes on her. But some of these responses have really made me question the type of people I have been learning from. I've been on and around Mumsnet a long time, I don't believe women should roll over and be kind and I'm not generally nationalistic, there are things about my nationality that I'm not proud of. Call me naive, I didn't expect some of these responses. I wouldn't expect and I doubt there would be similar remarks about my Celtic sisters - Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany and Cornwall.
It's probably best to leave this here as this discussion has gone far beyond JK.

Is it me, or is this the third or fourth thread this week complaining about women’s language, usually from a new poster or a ‘namechanger’. They realised they can’t police us, so now moving on to trying to police JK and JB. Why are women held to a higher standard than men? At least we’re not making jokes about raping people with baseball bats or people dying in a grease fire.

@Morverner you do realise that you're talking about two or three posters who have been mean about the IoM, compared to many many more who haven't posted on this thread or who have but haven't said anything offensive about the IoM. The people that post here are not an organised group who agree on a party line. It's individuals posting. If you don't like what a handful of posters have said then add their usernames to your list of people to avoid interacting with and move on.
