Common sense.

Lia is done then

achillestoes · 19/06/2022 16:37

100% the right decision. Well done, FINA. I reckon when you put this to a vote in most institutions you would get results like this.

RenegadeMatron · 19/06/2022 16:38

Good. This is the only right decision.

334bu · 19/06/2022 16:41

Well done FNA on such a courageous stance. Now let's hope sanity will soon prevail in other sports.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/06/2022 16:41

How are female swimmers supposed to progress to the elite competition level if every other stage is open to trans girls or trans women? If they're winning the races, taking the training spots and breaking those records at club level, how are women and girls going to get to elite level?

MattDamon · 19/06/2022 16:43

Excellent. Hopefully this will give other sports bodies the confidence to do the same.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/06/2022 16:43

Here's a link to their comprehensive and scientifically evidenced policy:

resources.fina.org/fina/document/2022/06/19/525de003-51f4-47d3-8d5a-716dac5f77c7/FINA-INCLUSION-POLICY-AND-APPENDICES-FINAL-.pdf

They're looking at open competitions for the "inclusive" future but are absolutely clear about protecting the integrity of women's swimming.
Well done FINA.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 16:44

Yes, about time too.

tobee · 19/06/2022 16:45

Just coming to report this!

There will be no point in trans taking part in early competitions if they will be disqualified from the elite level is there? The whole point for the Lia's of this world is the elite level.

Indeed - clubs won't waste women's spaces on born males if they know they'll be barred from elite competition. It's a waste of resources
I suspect this will be the start of the dam breaking. It's informed, science based, legally enforceable, they've danced the inclusion dance but are confident in protecting women's sport for women. I note they're clear that this applies to elite competitions only but we've all been waiting for a sport to remove themselves from capture by the trans groups and swimming have finally done it.

grafittiartist · 19/06/2022 16:53

Excellent news.
The BBC comments are supportive.

TeenPlusCat · 19/06/2022 16:53

Plus this will give swimmers lower down more confidence to voice unfairness, for example, at USA College level.

Useranon1 · 19/06/2022 16:54

Thank god. Off to give this as much social media support as I can as we know there will be a backlash

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/06/2022 16:56

Hopefully that's the case Vest but a blanket ban at all levels would be best. When I competed I knew I was never going to the elite levels but I enjoyed my level. And the competition still needed to be fair.

Maerchentante · 19/06/2022 16:56

Common sense prevailed.

TheSeldomSeenKid · 19/06/2022 17:00

Thank goodness, that’s a relief.

titchy · 19/06/2022 17:01

Good. And they'll provide an open category for those who have transitioned. That's a win-win isn't it? There'll be an elite open category for Lia et al. So no one is discriminated against. I'm pretty sure there'll be enough companies out there who'll be falling over themselves to sponsor an elite trans athlete who competes in the open category. So lia's career can continue. Fab news all round.

TamzinGrey · 19/06/2022 17:02

Fantastic news. Made my day 😊

Clymene · 19/06/2022 17:03

YES

nettie434 · 19/06/2022 17:03

I was going to post a link to this but wasn't surprised that other posters were here even more quickly. I think it is the right decision. I see they are going to investigate a solution often posted here, having an open category.

When you compare the physiques of, for example, Adam Peaty and Kathleen Dawson, it's clear that male swimmers who have gone through puberty are at a clear physical advantage.

acatcalledjohn · 19/06/2022 17:04

This just made me celebrate. And then I thought: Isn't it insane that we have come to the point of celebrating common sense?

Well done FINA!

achillestoes · 19/06/2022 17:05

Next legislation...

Feelingoktoday · 19/06/2022 17:06

The science even uses the correct definitions for female and male. At last sense.

JellyBellyNelly · 19/06/2022 17:07

This is really good news.
