Anyone else in Stella Creasy's constituency?

She's sent out a personal statement about that interview in The Telegraph (the "women can have a penis" one).

Presumably she's had a lot of women contacting her asking WTF or words to that effect and has felt the need to send something out.

She starts by claiming the article "misrepresented" her, then doubles down by repeating what she said that was supposedly a misrepresentation (albeit in slightly fluffier language).

She also makes the claim that only five penis people are actually in women's prison in the UK right now? Is that true? (I mean, five is too many, but less than I thought).

Needless to say it's a painful read.

Not sure, but is it relevant when she's advocating that there should be more?

Helleofabore · 01/06/2022 08:20

Did she say 5 in UK or England and Wales?

SallyLockheart · 01/06/2022 08:23

How do they know how many penis people are in woman’s prisons. I got the impression the prison service had rolled over on self ID so presumably record them as female.

Hoardasurass · 01/06/2022 08:25

According to foi there are 12+ in Scotland

Lottapianos · 01/06/2022 08:26

I really don't know what her game is. Is she just a shit stirrer, an attention seeker at any cost? Does she really not see how unhinged all this is making her, and the party, look?

There is a tendency for politicians to conveniently forget this. They quote the England and Wales figures like a desperate defense.

Xiaoxiong · 01/06/2022 08:29

I read all her responses on Twitter at the time - she kept saying the headline misrepresented her, she didn't write the headline...but then doubling down on exactly what the headline said!

I think she's a true believer and living in a bubble of people who enforce purity on this issue, like some of the barristers in the Allison Bailey tribunal over the past couple of weeks. Hence she doesn't think she sounds as unhinged as everyone else thinks she does.

Lottapianos · 01/06/2022 08:31

'I think she's a true believer and living in a bubble of people who enforce purity on this'

You may well be right. In that case, she's incredibly stupid

SarahWoodruff · 01/06/2022 08:36

I think attention-seeking is a huge part of it. She ran for deputy leader in 2015 but has done little since in political terms, and Starmer hasn't given her a major role. So she can either fade into obscurity or start rows on Twitter.

I mean, she could concentrate on constituency business, but that doesn't seem to be her style.

FOJN · 01/06/2022 08:45

The numbers vary, she may be correct but what she is not saying is that of a GRC can be issued on the basis of self ID, which she supports, then all TW could be housed in the female prison estate. Roughly 50% of TW in prison have a conviction for sexual offences.

Stats in link below.

Five is five more than there should be. But I thought that they didn't know the true total because a male with a GRC is recorded as being female, and the MoJ had been Stonewalled and thought that they weren't allowed to ask about anyone's actual sex because of the secrecy clauses in the GRA.

tabbycatstripy · 01/06/2022 09:32

I have zero understanding of why it is simultaneously an argument she relies on that it’s ‘only’ five, at the same time as arguing that TW are female. They are either female, or not. If they are female, it’s irrelevant how many there are in a female prison. If they are not female, the number should be zero.

I don't know, but I do know we were discussing that there were only 5 males with sexual abuse/assault convictions in E&W prisons recently. On here, on another thread ...

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:46

It was this thread:

This post (quoted):

suggestionsplease1 · 30/05/2022 16:34

334bu's post seems to suggest there are actually very few transgender women (with or without GRC) convicted of a sexual offence in the women's prison estate:

"The Minister also stated that the number of trans-identifying prisoners held in
the women’s prison estate with a conviction for at least one sexual offence
was fewer than 5, and that this included prisoners with a GRC."

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:47

the number of trans-identifying prisoners held in the women’s prison estate with a conviction for at least one sexual offence was fewer than 5, and that this included prisoners with a GRC

I presume this is where Stella got the number 5 from. She seems to be confusing 'males with convictions for sexual offences' with 'transwomen'.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:48

Beg pardon, I suppose that quote doesn't specify sex, so Stella is taking 'trans-identifying prisoners held in the women’s prison estate with a conviction for at least one sexual offence' and confusing it with 'transwomen'.

Circumferences · 01/06/2022 09:49

Oh bloody hell, so either 100% of TW are inside in E&W for sex offences, or SC has her figures muddled up.

Both scenarios are depressing as shit.

Might be worth asking her where she got her figures from, if you're a constituent.

Circumferences · 01/06/2022 09:54

Quote text below from her paragraph on prisons

Reflecting this policy (policy on trans prisoners) at present there are five transwomen in women's prisons including those with a GRC. You can find more detail on this on a recent parliamentary question. Women in prisons is something I've been doing some policy work on recently and especially the treatment of pregnant women in prisons. Nearly twenty years ago the Corston Review highlighted how most women in prison are victims of domestic abuse and trafficking. Baroness Corston called for a radical rethink of how we treat these women including the need to prevent them being incarcerated in the first place. It is also important to counter the suggestion transwomen as a group are likely to be violent, and that the right to be recognised as a woman or a man should not be dependent on penal reform

Not in her constituency but it sounds as if she’s really making a huge fool of herself and needs reigning in by someone more senior in her party. I’d imagine she’s already lost the vote of all her constituents who’ve contacted her.

As for her claim that there are “only five” - she really doesn’t get it, does she?

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:52

Yes.
I'm too mad-angry-cry right now to reply at all but I will try tomorrow.

Rodedooda · 01/06/2022 09:55

Maybe she's planning to come out and say she's got this all horribly wrong, she's reflected and women's safety and dignity are as important as men's and Rosie Duffield was right all along.

Its all part of the game.

That'll get her some attention.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:56

I'm sure she didn't mean to conflate sex offenders with transwomen.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 09:57

Unless her figures are correct, and all of the transwomen in women's prisons have convictions for sex offences. Which seems unlikely.

SpiderVersed · 01/06/2022 09:58

Although it would be more reassuring, Stella, if it relied on penile reform. Like, maybe, not allowing them in a women’s facility.
