Mary Anning Staue and Suffragette colours - they've removed them!!

Mary Anning Rocks campaigned for and have now successfully installed a statue to the amazing Mary Anning (love her as am into fossils and feminism). Hooray to that!

They have now apologised on the twitter for putting suffragette coloured ribbons on her as they 'didn't realise they were associated with anti-trans views' 🙄

I feel a bit sorry for them as there were clearly lobbied from one side and are now getting it handed to them on a plate about how ridiculous this is.

Can't access the tweets. Have they been removed?

The Mary Anning Rocks tweet does seem to be gone.

Thelnebriati · 26/05/2022 21:32

I'm pleased to see they've taken down the apology and reposted a tweet of the statue decorated with some ribbons.

That is wonderful news.

I feel like I spend my life muttering or growling “For fucks’s sake!” these days 😳

Artichokeleaves · 26/05/2022 22:46

Another case of activists ordering "jump!" and someone who doesn't understand the situation fully and takes messages in good faith, jumped. Looks like they may now be reaching the ".... hang on a minute," stage.

I live in Northumberland, where we have alovely statue of Emily Davison( She is buried in Morpeth) The statue is in the town park and is constantly surrounded by lavender to represent the sufferage colours as we see in the pic. Could flowers be planted around the statue of of Mary Anning as a more permenant solution to ribbons?

That’s an excellent idea. I wonder if anyone down there able to do this?

RhannionKPSS · 26/05/2022 23:38

Both statues are very beautiful.

Don't be angry with the Mary Anning Rocks people though - the girl who made this happen was only 10 when she started the campaign and is now 13. Let's not make her lose her enthusiasm! She deserves all the 👏🏼 for her achievement.

This!

Kendodd · 26/05/2022 23:54

Have they not tried to actually claim Mary Anning as their own? What with her love of rocks, there must have been a trans man in there screaming to get out.

The 2020 film Ammonite tried to claim her as a lesbian despite no evidence about her sexuality, IIRC. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonite_(film)

Didn't realise they suffragette colours had been "co-opted" by anti-trans groups!

Speechless. Some heartening replies though.

In June 2021 historian Fern Riddell tweeted “At some point UK feminism is going to need to address how transphobic hate has stolen the colours of the suffragettes to identify themselves”.

Is it just me or is anyone else glad that at least the TRA haven't tried to 'claim' the Suffragettes as their own and try to make out that they would have been fighting field their rights too? I feel like I'm getting grateful for such small pathetic things these days though so I might just be me.

Imagine feminists wanting to celebrate the Suffragettes 🙄 ...

Too late, the GCs have already claimed the suffragettes as their own. Even though they have no idea of what Anning would have thought of trans people.

Worldgonecrazy · 27/05/2022 06:31

I was at the unveiling. It was a great day for women. It’s a shame anti-women activists are doing their best to shut women down.

can we stop calling them TRAs and call them what they truly are - anti-women.

bellinisurge · 27/05/2022 06:59

They are such dickish little wankers

LizzieSiddal · 27/05/2022 07:50

I’m so glad they’ve taken that tweet down. I heard the mother of the school girl (she’s now 15) who instigated the campaign for the statue, on Womans hour this week (think it was Wednesday around 10.45). She was clearly a huge Women's Rights supporter and I can imagine she’s had a little look into what is actually going on and made her own mind up. She’s a very inspiring woman.

KittenKong · 27/05/2022 07:51

Which one have they taken (the official twitter account?) down?

The official Twitter Account -Mary Anning Rocks, has taken down the tweet which apologised for allowing suffragette ribbons as they were associated with the “anti trans” movement.
They have now put up a new photo of Mary’s statue adorned with Suffragette ribbons. Smile

Don't worry - Katy Mongomerie is going to take them back for woman.

We really should be grateful that we have got her as a wonderful feminist..........

Never fear!

Monty is here!

Useless twat. 🤨

WeeBisom · 27/05/2022 08:15

I know I shouldn’t be shocked, but I am. The original tweet literally just talked about celebrating women. That’s it. She didn’t even hint at anything remotely anti trans.

Transwomen say their rights and interests are aligned with women. There is no clash between trans rights and women’s rights. If that’s the case, they really should learn to stop losing their shit every time women are celebrated.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/05/2022 08:32

Gorgeous statue. Makes me want to make another visit to Lyme Regis to admire it. Lovely part of the world.

Dr CC of the screenshot above appears to be cut from the same cloth as the self-righteous children's publishers/writers/agents/illustrators who are gunning for Onjali Rauf, Rachel Rooney et al. Sees what she believes to be wrongthink, springs into action with a patronising direct message explaining to someone else that in taking another woman's tweet at face value Shock she has missed a dogwhistle, feels so pleased with herself that she takes a screenshot of said DM and then posts it to her followers so they can all tell her how wonderful she is and how horrific it is that some other women wanted to celebrate a woman's achievements without any mention of male people.

Worldgonecrazy · 27/05/2022 09:12

The statue is definitely worth a visit. It is one of the best statues I have ever seen, and captures a lovely energy. There is a more, ahem, ‘modern’ sculpture of Mary Anning in the Gardens above Lyme, good in its own way but nothing close to the brilliance of the new statue.

It's been made repeatedly clear. Women wanting rights, talking about them, organising to argue for them, is incompatible with 'trans rights'.

Draw your own conclusions therefore about what we are being told 'trans rights' are incompatible with.

Bear in mind the awful behaviour and attempts to silence made when women meet to discuss their existing rights under law. And the pile ons and endless harassment to stop everyone using the word 'woman'. Naice women don't name themselves or say anything or do anything ever that is not all about their betters.

Mummy having any kind of independent existence from baby is just waaaaay too threatening to cope with.

Doesn't India W call themself a suffragette? I don't have enough eye rolls for that one.
